its so interesting how people argue about music. in the end there is no right or wrong. if you want to understand how others feel about the music, its like asking them who they are. What their lifes have been, what their dreams are made of. Art is a language with neverending vocabulary
If I ever got a kid I will name it Emily after this song. No matter if it's a girl or a boy. Such incredible lyrics in combination with her song and harp!
I love this. I hope someday I can be similar to her but with my cello instead =) Her music is uplifting and inspiring and this is my favorite album cover EVER it's so...magical...like something on a book cover...=)
@fat8622 omg this is art not like the rap she actually CAN sing and CAN play an instrument, sorry but not all the people can enjoy the caviar, you better stay with your frozen food and your hot dogs.
@monorobot23 Tim Buckley, Captain Beefheart, and Charles Mingus are art, not some hipster slut who sounds like Ralph Wiggum picking at a harp for 10 minutes and singing about forests and bears. I was like you, once, thinking this indie shit makes me smarter, but then I picked up Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and Trout Mask Replica, that's real art
@fat8622 i dont blame you, you just CANT understand this music, its just too much for someone like you, to understand visual arts, you need tu understand and know complex things like composition, simbolism and technique, here its the same, you just cant compare how she sings, how she plays the harp, and so much more, with 2 retarded big monkeys playing to talk, and its not indie you subnormal ape.
@monorobot23 have you heard trout mask replica. It's my favorite album of all time, a piece of incredibly intricate, experimental playing. That is album that needs to be understood, an album where an ear for composition is required. If I'm able to see so much value in that, I'm certain an indie folk album (albeit a somewhat avant garde one) isn't to much of a challenging listen. The melodies here are sort of pretty, but her voice is awful. Why listen to this when I could just put on Starsailor
@xdavidxGR you misunderstood me, the other guy was saying I don't like this, because I wasn't smart enough to comprehend that, and, as fan of avant garde types of music, I took offense to that. I have no problem with music that's easy to get into. I love bands like the beatles or nirvana
@fat8622 you referenced me in the post so i suppose it was a response for me ^ ^
and by the way i would not identfy Joanna (especially ys) immediatly as "easy" (i really hate this term), the song are all really long and kind of articulate with very symbolyst lyrics, and it creates really a lot using only three "three" lines of sound (voice, harp and cello)
@fat8622 You're obviously musically ignorant and can't appreciate these string arrangements, which are the best part of the song to me. Don't think you're cool because you like Captain Beefheart, because I love Trout Mask Replica and that doesn't make this song any less awesome. Fuck you, you're a pretentious faggot.
@fat8622 uh oh, you've just mentioned possibly my two favourite albums of all time and yet I do believe this is a masterpiece, I was once like you, then I became a purist.
@Bkkhngr81 actually Newsom memorizes the lyrics and this comes from her background in theater schools where she had to memorize long poems of course she writes them down but she memorizes them nonetheless. I mean what musician would preform with a lyric sheet? And don't insult makes you look ignorant.
@krono965 Michael Stipe? He forgets lots of lyrics and often has to read them. As does Graham Coxon. Nothing wrong with it - they're musicians, not memory champions. Having said that, JN does memorise her lyrics and it's pretty remarkable. She's a genius.
@ShaggyAlonso13 some do and it looks well lame. For example Dylan doesn't use a lyric sheet and his repetoire is huge. No it's not wrong, of course not, but it does look bad if you don't remember the lyrics.
I am here to commemorate the day my ears no longer have disdain for Joanna Newsom's vocals (been a tough 4 years listening to Ys) and now i can fully appreciate her music. Yippee!!

I wonder why people can't seem to see deeper meaning in such beautiful music.
I guess people are fearful or narrow-minded,if they hear or see something is little different then what many are used to.
Meh,one day maybe.
