There's a sort of heat resistant chemical in the pill that forms a spongy matrix. The other materials keep the pill in a nice compact shape, but as the less heat resistant materials burn, the matrix of heat resistant materials is no longer held in place and starts to expand because of its own tension. It isn't growing because after you burn it, it weighs a lot less.
