  • wanna visit this place too someday.. fantastic scenery.... :)

  • People are bickering about the Shetlands being Scottish or Norwegian. Makes me laugh, If your a visitor you go to Lerwick, which has a high population of ex-pat Scots who like to think it's Scotland but smaller, you go to Unst or the other islands & most folk are from the land, they do not consider themselves Scotsor Norwegians, or part of the UK in fact they are simply islanders. It is such a beautiful place everyone tries to claim it, truth is speak to the locals, they are not kean on either.

  • hermosas las shetlands, las feroes deberian aprender de las shetlands.

  • I'm from New Zealand, and I've long held a fascination to visit the Shetlands. It's about as far away from NZ as it's possible to be. One day I'll get there.

  • I miss hame! Grew up in Scalloway, dats me castle right yunder... :)

  • Genetic research has shown that Shetland's population descends from

65% Scottish Picts and 35% Norse Vikings.

Shetland is also geographically much closer to Scotland than Norway.

And it was part of Scotland long long before it became part of Norway for a while, after Norse Vikings stole it, Scotland gained it right back from the Norse.

  • @segano1 Ah very good, also it was the English who forced the return of the Shetlands from the nords to the Scots, although I have family in Shetland and I can tell you they do not consider themselves Scottish, English, Nordick or part of the UK. to them they are simply Shetlanders or Islanders. The son of the Shetalnd King sold it but the English told the Norwiegions they would not trade with them until it was returned. And so we have the shetlands. most Northerly UK. mother lives on Unyst.

  • heard conflicting comments about the Shetland islands - one calling it the least 'racist' rural place in Scotland, and the other saying it's one of the most racist (towards other skinned people), what is the truth?

  • A majority of Shetlanders do not like being classed as "scottish" at all. In fact, they have more of an association with Scandinavia.

  • @MickeyLove01 where did you get that from??

  • @egordo46 Shetlanders and of course my father who was born there.

  • @MickeyLove01 I am born and bred, and have never left but i would say thats a bit of a sweeping statement. Maybe back in the days of the Shetland Bus but not now.

  • @egordo46 I have lived there and visit quite often and it's an opinion shared with many. Viking history is celebrated, scottish history not much so...

  • @MickeyLove01 I can't think of anyone i know who prefers to be classed as Scandinavian, we are proud to be Scottish.

  • @lazzamcsploosh That is not what I said. Then again, Up-Helly-Aa wouldn't be a celebration of scottish history would it?

  • @MickeyLove01 Well considering they have a few Up Helly Aa's scattered around scotland then yes. They have a mini Up Helly Aa in Edinburghh also..

  • The tourists don't notice; But the locals take the piss out of them :) I was born and lived in Shetland. Before moving to England :)

  • Why so few trees there?

  • @scrm1 its very windy, not many trees grow there but there are still trees further inland. I just got back yesterday
