I cannot believe how bad the reviewer got this amp to sound. I owned a Randall RG 80 112 SC and gigged with it for several years. It was a great sounding amp. This demo sounds HORRIBLE. Do not pay any attention to it. If you see one of these amps - try it out. You will be pleasantly surprised. Just don't let the dude in this video turns the controls.
Dont b bias on solid state amps..they r still great..its jst a matter of taste....its still the sound...and the fingers...and mor importantly...the creativity of doing solos..
@theguy782 Metal Zones are terrible and IMO it's much better to use amp distortion rather than using a distortion pedal. At most you really should only use an overdrive to boost the amp distortion. As far as distortions go the metal zone is pretty abysmal. I wouldn't use that pedal in any circumstance.
@Wes919 ok i get it. yea ive been lookin for new equip and im not a hundred percent sure on what to get. kinda going for a George Lynch/ Dave Mustaine tone but able to do a lot of Dimebag shit. any suggestions?

lol "the distortion doesn't sound all that fantastic".. fire this idiot. This amp is pretty much famous for its distorted sound. That's what dimebag darell, def leppard and the edge used..
They suck with a strat or that type of guitar. I had one in the 80's and with the les paul it was really cool. Some HOMO stole mine!! That one in this video looks just like the one I had. YOU STOLE MY AMP YOU HOMO with the backwards baseball cap!!!
There's a blues band in the Bay area called Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers. .a top notch well known blues band. The lead guitar guy uses this amp! He told me that his is modified. Being a tube amp guy, I have to say that he was getting some impressive tones out of this thing.
i got mine for 75 bucks used! :) the distortion sucks pretty badly! specially if you're going for a hi gain metal sound. you CAN get a decent distortion out of it, problem is you have to pull the treble knob wich means you'll be loosing a lot of mids and definiton and when you play live it would be the equivalent of you playing trough a cheap 10 watt amp (trust me, i used to play with it live).. but the clean channel is LOUD and it's really good! however i'd recomend to buy a distortion pedal
This video brings back bad memories. I bought one of these in '83-'84 and had it as my main amp until '95. I honestly never liked it much (but couldn't afford better stuff at the time). A few issues: in a band environment when it was cranked mine would "howl" with an annoying electronic noise. The reverb ALWAYS gave me issues and would start to build a high-pitched whine if you turned it up too high. I never used combining the channels. I always uses clean/dirty an together they sound bad
Own one. Gorgeous clean channel & king-kong 'verb. Louder than God, unlike most SS amps of comparable wattage.
DIR-TAY channel not that bad for an older SS amp, but still -- it's old SS dir-tay. Really cool as a BOOST for leads, though -- set it low gain, high volume, slam it IN ADDITION to clean ch. (remember, this amp'll mix the two -- need the footswitch to do this trick live) and it burns in a lotta mids-high mids that slice thru like a knife for solos.
yeah usually distortion pedals are made to be through the direct line.. i think this goes the same for blues and metal pedals as well... but other than that special effects* that add other things should be plug in fx loop
today's solid state and digital gear sounds soooooooooooo much better than this old stuff. There has been alot of progress made, despite what the tube snobs always say... it's like buying an old computer - why bother? My iPOD has a bigger hard drive than my first computer!
this amp is 20+ years old... we have stuff now that didn't even exist back then. Something like a POD would have sounded like a crazy pipe dream back then(I started playing guitar in the 80s). Solid state amps back then were buzzy and flat sounding, with no articulation... nowadays, decent solid state and even digital gear like the PODs respond to pick attack, volume knob roll-down, etc. (all the stuff the tube snobs say they DON'T, thus showing their ignorance & bias)
People try to compare a tiny solid state practice amp with an anemic 8" speaker to a Fender Deluxe and duh!, of course the Fender is gonna sound better... but a Vetta II or a Flextone will sound fucking GREAT in comparison(individual playing characteristics/talent notwithstanding).
It's all subjective and most people confuse 'opinion' with 'fact'. The FACT is that technology has progressed - except when it comes to tube amps. LOL
@tony93666 I had a Flextone. I don't know if there was a problem with it or what but it sounded muddy on every amp model no matter what I did to the EQ.
solid state, particularly modelling amps are so underrated. (maybe we should keep it that way...) i can get just as nice a sound out of my Vox Valvetronix as i can out of my mates hot rod deluxe, besides it being so much more versatile. Problem is the fixtures and fittings of solid states are generally shite: take my vox: i replaced the speaker with a celestion vintage 30, and it now totally shits on a whole lot more expensive kit. Before it had a really nasty speaker distortion.
I had one and gigged with it back in the late 80s. It was absolutely bulletproof but the tone was a little on the harsh side. I needed channel switching and it was the only channel switching amp I owned at the time. The pedal is *not* hard wired to the amp. Mine wasn't. It is loud but not the most toneful amp I have ever heard.

as i can see - you only can play 1 simple lick and a few chords that are overdriven and in such way hiding the playing errors because all we hear is sh****ty noise!
Solid state? 10000000 wats? Put it near the drums and step away a few feet - it will disapear. Or just throw it out!
bullshit - ofcourse you cannot put it on stage - but didn't you listen to him ??c'mon - he talks about what you might seek in an amp - you can't have a tube amp in your roon just to excesise -

Oh david, releasing an amp review for something thats affordable and nice right before thanksgiving, youre going to cause a run on them. Wish I had one to ebay lol.
Hey dudes! thanks for the great videos! My father just bought a Taylor T5 at the Taylor road show in San Luis Obispo. Your review on the T5 was awesome, it was the first place we heard one, and now we have one. We are planning a trip to El Cajon this summer! You guys rock!
got to tell ya love Randall had a RB300 bass combo bought in like 83 and just sold it, it had no noise in the controls nothing the only thing I found is you have to watch the dealer when I bought mine it came with a test speaker that was installed at the factory by mistake and it went bad dealer wasn't going to go good for it, called the factory and they paid all shipping and sent some free goodies and pulled the franchise from the lame dealer so its a great company and great gear
im pretty sure that pull knob is a compressor

8-ohm ext. cab -- bumps up to 100 watts.
Like I said, takes pedals well -- futz around with either or both channels.
Much lighter & more organic-sounding than a JC 120.
And built like production-line amps AIN'T built anymore.
Mine has a peculiar but HEVVY-duty 6-blade 2-button LED footswitch, which are harder'n hell to find. But worth it.

whats the difference between running pedals through the effects loop or running the pedals straight to the input?
crscdn 2 years ago
one time you run it into the effects loop, the other time into the input xD
no, so effects pedal are sounding better if you put them into the effects loop, cause then they dont get effected by the equaliezer and so on ...
BUT disortion and overdrive pedals you normally put into the normal INPUT, cause they are sounding better played straigth through the input

I had that amp, what a piece of CRAP!!! Mine was very grainy, almost Crate-like distortion.
I went to a Pearce G1 after that, then finally saw the tube amp light and got a Vibro-King.

That guitar looks like it has a dent in it above the pick ups, when he moves it when you can see it good in the light
wingeddemon5807 3 years ago
thats because the Les Paul is an archtop solid body guitar, it's not a dent, its just raised wood.

Hey dudes! thanks for the great videos! My father just bought a Taylor T5 at the Taylor road show in San Luis Obispo. Your review on the T5 was awesome, it was the first place we heard one, and now we have one. We are planning a trip to El Cajon this summer! You guys rock!

The song at 4:29 sound a little bit like "Six Blade Knife" by Dire Straits

got to tell ya love Randall had a RB300 bass combo bought in like 83 and just sold it, it had no noise in the controls nothing the only thing I found is you have to watch the dealer when I bought mine it came with a test speaker that was installed at the factory by mistake and it went bad dealer wasn't going to go good for it, called the factory and they paid all shipping and sent some free goodies and pulled the franchise from the lame dealer so its a great company and great gear

I have a Valvetronix too and for the price it's the better amp you can get , but buy the 30Watt not the 15watt...
WickedBoss 3 years ago
Yeah.....I have the 30 Watt....The clean and distortion on AC 30 Modelling on Valvetronix is really nice......It sounds just as the AC 30 to my ears
