  • Legal check. The fact that Martin lost the puck and leaned forward at the last moment is what caused the head contact. No blame to be assigned.

  • Keep ur head up pussy

  • It is ironic the Sioux fans say it was a clean hit. Seems like anytime a Sioux player has a big hit on an opponent their fans say its "clean & legal" but anytime an opponent does it, it's dirty. Typical Sioux crap, first it's Frattin & now his gay-lover Malone. If the Marvin & Genoway roles were reversed, Genoway hitting Marvin the way Marvin hit Genoway, Sioux fans would say clean hit.

  • fucking ND, dirty hicks...

  • That is an impressive analysis...

  • Maybe its hockey-legal, might just not be ethic though.

  • I think Malone has learned quite a lot from his boyfriend Matt Frattin.

  • I wish him a speedy recovery.

  • Significant risk of spinal cord injury is part of hockey? FUCK YOU. You have 200lb, 6foot plus guys taking a full bore run into the zone, gliding for ten feet and going in with the hands to the head. Both guys could have been at the recieving end of a hit like this, both guys need to quit that. 40 years ago, when guys did not wear helmets, you never saw that. RESPECT the game

  • CLEAN HIT Martin had his head down its a shame that he was injured risk of the sport

  • his hands were waiste lvl and elbows were fixed, great clean hit

  • KEEP YOUR HEADS UP KIDS

  • Even Jesse Martin didn't think the hit was illegal.

    The Denver Post ---

According to Martin's father, Terry Martin, Jesse called North Dakota senior Brad Malone to ease Malone's mental anguish over his check that caused the injury midway through DU's 3-0 victory on Saturday in Grand Forks, N.D.

"Jesse had heard Brad was having a tough time and he wanted Brad to know he had no hard feelings," Terry Martin said. "Jesse doesn't think it was an illegal hit and he wanted Brad to know that."

  • So someone who comes in full speed, 2 hands on the stick, above his head and hits him square in the head with a left elbow is clean? Makes sense. That hit wasnt clean. His head was up and then looked down after the puck jumped off his stick. All Malone had to do was put 1 hand on his stick and put his hands squarely into Martins chest. It would have made the same point and end Martins career. Typical UND fans cheering on a dirty play. I would still say its dirty if it was the Du player hittin him

  • @BradyMVP66 *not end his career

  • no, that's not what I said, I said that you were a moron for advocating this type of hit... I can only assume that you are one of the coaches who teaches the players to lead with the hands on hits to the chin. (and I said that you should read the rule book... did you?) NO? Enough said

I lose respect for UND and the Sioux program with your every word. (Amazing that Brett Hextall and his antics would not make me lose respect, but you can).

  • @jimacheson You lost all respect for calling me a moron. You gotta be a real peach of a ref.

  • siouxrube, I don't care if you played the game, i have officiated for 20 years, and I have to explain the rules to coaches and former players (NHL players) all the time. You don't lead a check with your hands, plain and simple. just because refs let it go, does not mean that it is legal. And just because you teach your players to do it does not make you knowledgable, it makes you a moron.

As a ref to a coach who does not teach sportsmanship... maybe you don't know, but plenty of coaches do

  • @jimacheson So now I am a moron because you are a ref? Brilliant. Enough said.

  • @siouxrube No you are a moron because you can't even get the facts of the play right...first, there was a 5 minute major called on Malone and a game misconduct (you said there was no penalty) check USCHO if you don't believe that. Second...IF you are a coach...I feel bad for your players...you do not know hockey well enough to see the fact that he lead with his hands and it was not a follow through...so yes...you are a moron

  • @NBssmgoalie30 I said there was no penalty called during the play.It was called after the fact. Calling me a moron really hit me hard. LOL.

  • @NBssmgoalie30 It was a follow through. he hit him with the shoulder and his elbow and hands came up after the fact. Malone is taller to begin with, and martin was hunched down which is why it seems like his hands are high. Are we going to make rules that say tall players can no longer hit shorter players? get real

  • Looked clean to me...I wish Jesse a speedy recovery

  • Just for the record Sioux Rube is a high school coach and an ex-player so I would think his analysis is spot on.

  • @goon48 it is sad that you think that a HS coach, advocating hands to the head while charging a player who is not paying attention has an analysis worth defending.

I cannot tell you how many times I had to explain to former NHL players that the ruls in USA hockey are different than in the NHL... and just like rube, I was wrong and they were right, because they were former players. (how do I roll my eyes here?)

  • @jimacheson go back and watch the video he was coasting.

  • @jimacheson first of all malone is a few inches taller than martin so his hands are going to come up higher on martin than a player of similar height. secondly hitting with hands to the head is discouraged at ANY level, including the NHL. it does still happen but players are tought to hit with the shoulder and follow through with the arms. headshots are always discouraged but in this case i dont see this as a head shot, it was a good clean hit by a bigger, stronger player.

  • He loses control of the puck just before the hit and that allows the unfortunate to happen. I really hope he turns out okay.

  • Wow some of you people best stick with curling. No contact there.Arms were up?He followed through with his check. My God have any of you played the game?

  • @siouxrube

I actually played for a long time. That is the kind of hit that hockey has been trying to eliminate. He hit him high.

If there wasn't contact...how the hell does Martin have 3 fractures in his neck???

    You are a moron.

  • @mcfcblueinusa He had his down and Malone led with his shoulder and followed through with his check. Calling me a moron is classy.

Bottom line is I hope the kid has a full recovery.

  • @siouxrube you are absolutely right. it was a clean hit by a bigger, stronger player. martin is the shorter player and was reaching for the puck, malone came in and made a good clean hit. don cherry will also agree with us.

but i guess there must be alot of american hockey moms on youtube who dont like hitting in hockey. and its funny how some americans are still under the impression that just because a player gets injured on the play, that auomatically makes it a "dirty" hit. LOL.

  • @dafuksup You are exactly right. Funny how the whining has ceased after Jesse himself said it wasn't an illegal hit. Godspeed to him.

  • @mcfcblueinusa Martin was low, are we now going to enact a rule that says you can only hipcheck people? Sometimes in the sport of hockey incidents like these occur, they have occurred for the last 100 years of hockey, there is no sense in whining about it or trying to prevent it, as long as there is contact it will always occur. It is rare that a player gets this injured on a hit clean or not.

  • @NHLArchive the key of this whole thing is playing the GAME with class and aggression. Malone, if he wasn't a complete jerk off would have saw jesse's head down and not looked at as opportunity to take a head shot. Hits in the game and punishing them for having their head down is completely legitimate. With that said, there are rules for contact with the head that are in place. Hockey is a physical game and should be. Not a head hunting game. Have some respect with no cheap shots

  • @sandeendan this wasn't headhunting, sure he was looking to send martin into next week, but that has been a part of hockey for the past 100 years, maybe you should get in touch with hockey history, this hit being illegal is a joke. People are just up in arms because there was serious injury, look in the nhl at the hit Taylor Pyatt laid on Aaron Rome, same exact hit, less of an injury, nobody cared. It is HOCKEY things like this happen very rarely, you don't need useless regulations on hitting.

  • siouxrube, read the book on checking,

it is to be done with the shoulders and torso, not extended arms.

Checking is to take away puck posession, not conciousness.

Malone threw hands to the head... there was nothing legal about that hit, just as there was nothing legal about the hit to Brian Flynn last week at Maine. Playing hard and hitting hard are not the same as head hunting.

  • @jimacheson the hands come up after, it is a natural hitting motion. And a shoulder or elbow is gonna do more damage than gloves for the record. The big mistake here was Martin with his head down in a situation when he clearly should have been paying attention to what was in front of him. And maybe if he didn't have that whopping birdcage on his head he wouldn't have to look down at the puck.

  • @NHLArchive Very well said.I agree totally.

  • Stick was up, arms were up...that's a head hunter hit.

  • Hope for a quick recovery to Jesse. He has 3 fractured bones in his neck and had emergency surgery in Minneapolis this morning to relieve the pressure from his spinal cord. Looked like a clean hit to me and unfortunately in a violent game that is hockey these things happen form time to time.It was not cheap. No penalty was called during the play.It was after the fact that one was called.Had the player gotten up on his own I guarantee you nothing would of been called.

  • @siouxrube There's nothing clean in that hit!

  • scary to watch

  • Kyllä se amerikkalainen jääkiekko on sitten hienoo... Vitun urpot ihannoin tällästä älytöntä kohmoomista ja haukkuu kotosta Sm-liigaa tylsäx jne.. On se hianoo...

  • The first thing you learn when checking comes into play at the Peewee level is to keep your head up. A moment before the hit he had his head up, you would have thought he saw Brad coming. Hoping for a quick recovery for Jesse though.

  • @NoCoSkier When you break this rule stuff like this happens, instead of focusing on the hitting people should make sure that by the time the players are in college they skate with their heads up, this is just embarrassing for martin.

  • Ahhhh, typical cheap Sioux. I think Eades teaches this shit. I which they would move to Canadian Junior where they belong.
