  • 1:30 in and I've subscribed, GB represent.

  • I thought the Golden Axe was the gold axe in Death Adders hand.

  • Golden Axe was the first game I ever played, when I was but a wee child. Brings back memories.

  • what a disaster golden axe beast warrior was

  • Brillant review, this is the best review of golden axe i've ever seen and yes, i love the game so much as well.

  • I always thought the extra level in the Megadrive level was really poor quality and looked like it'd been added at the very last minute. The graphics just didn't look too good in some parts.

It was a great game though and I'm just waiting for someone to do great things with this IP.

  • Which is the second movie shown here?

  • That's Conan the Destroyer. Not as good as Conan the Barbarian but still great for a swords and sorcery film.

  • A Fantastic review on a fantastic game.

  • Side Scroller Beatem ups were my BEST Genre I was a MASTER of them. I Kicked Death Bringers Arse the firsst time i ever fought him. Tip: Throw the skeletons at him and spam the special attack

  • True, Golden Axe is a great game.

  • The best brawler? Nah, streets of Rage 2 holds that spot (with 3 on a close second place) quite easily.

  • Skeletons were fairly useless in Oblivion, too. But they were damn resilient in God of War 2, because they just keep getting up unless you utterly splatterfy them.

  • Wooo more Highlander!

  • those skelatons on the final boss always got in my way

  • i always just threw them at him great way of dealing with them and hurting the boss at the same time

  • I can think of other games with better performance and quality but for the late 1900`s this would be good.

  • I'm fairly sure that "late 1900s" you meant "late 80s or early 90s". After all, 1977 (Atari 2600) could be called late 1900s.

Just a nitpick from me ^_^

  • Yeah i just forgot the correct year.

    =D

  • Ah that's cleared up then. I was wondering what games you were playing, considering you were apparently from the early 1900s, which would make you up to 109 years old. Impressive, but unlikely.

  • GoldenAxe...1 of my all time favourites on the legendary Sega Mega Drive 2 ; P

  • willow & J & the A ........ gr8 filmz

  • shining in the darkness looks llike a cross between the old atari game called Labrinth and a combat system simaliar to FF ,

  • I still think the thieves look like squirrel/chipmunk creatures.

  • I have Golden Axe on Mega CD, but I thin it's exactly the same as the Megadrive version. I always liked it, it reminded me of games like Double Dragon although I must admit I was never very good at it ;-)

I was tempted to get Golden Axe: Beast Rider just to see what it would be like. There seem to be a load of classic arcade games being re-envisioned right now, like Splatterhouse.

  • on Sega 5 in 1? yeah i had that i thinbk there is a differnce in sound and background

  • i like it too that he mention the amiga version, i grew up with the amiga and i had this game on the amiga.

I made a little video of those 2 version in compare on my channel.

btw. i saw you got Formula 1 97 in your PSX collection.

As you might can tell by my name i'm a big fan of racing games, i have this game as well for my PSX but i would like to see a review for by you. Racing games reviews are why to short on youtube.

  • I do love the fact that you've mentioned the Amiga version; it's a bugger trying to find a copy nowadays

  • I think the characters in this game the same which in severance game.

  • jason and the argonauts classic movie i loved when i was a kid those and the old sinbad flicks lol

  • Sorry to bug u again. But iv been meaning to ask anyone who know about this sort of stuff. How do u film the game itself without actaully having to put the camera in front of the tv making u get a really terrible picture?

  • You can either use a DVD recorder or use a program like CamStudio to record from an emulator or just link your TV to your PC.

  • kool. Thanks. Keep up the great reviews and the random gaming talk . Its a great way to hear about classic gems i may have missed back in the early years of games.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah I use a video camera, I specify the type in the description box on my channel. I used to do reviews using a webcam which is fine but I'm cursed with getting rubbish webcams.

  • Back.....lol..... I know I will probalby get blasted for saying this but have u ever tried Micheal jackson Moonwalker. I know its weird but its actaully a fun game for the Mega Drive.

  • Yeah I don't own it but I used to rent it from the local video store all the time when I was younger. I didn't get very far but I enjoyed it. Very stylish.

  • Ya very stylish indeed. By the way i have been meaning to ask this but what type of camera do you use Webcam or Video Camera? And do you use Windows M ovie Maker? Thanks

  • Great Review, I played a bit of Golden Axe when i was young at my friends but this was getting in to the early years of the N64 so I never picked it up. But I have to say I missed a great game. By the way loved the Strider review one of my favorite games I actually had.

  • You should do a review of Blade of Darkness.

    That game is very underrated.

  • I definately will, I agree it's criminally underrated. A true gem that was largely ignored.

  • Inspired by your review, I had another crack at completing Golden Axe & got all the way through to Death Bringer, but I only had one unit of energy left, so he kicked my ass. One day ...

I was surprised you called those dragons green & red. They look light blue & pink to me, but maybe I'm colour blind.

  • I agree about the red dragons looking pink but I just went by what the cast listing said lest I involk the wrath of diehard fanboys. Oh I've learned my lesson...

  • theres no way this is a 3 star video. great job

  • Thanks, always worth the effort put in just for the satisfaction of seeing it completed.

  • I had a Commodore64 on which I used to love Treasure Island Dizzy.

  • another great review

  • i only watched for your hair,, you even wore a nice shirt,. flashback ,desert strike, toejam and earl for me. sorry but the 5 stars are for your hair. pls dont unsubscribe me

  • That hair happens when you wear headphones the majority of the time, it rubs the gel out but keeps the shape for a nice 80s thing.

  • What the fuck is up with the ratings?!?! The review is great;but the game is so with that many clips you cant go wrong liked the arcade ones.

With that beast behind you i have to recommend oblivion although with mods. Im currently hooked on fallout 3 with mods, my childhood niche was cyborgs with lazers so pretty close with some mad max thrown in there, not quite a real fallout but thats something else ;p the amount of mods out there for both games means your tailoring your own game basicly.

  • Oh a mentally ill youtube user spends literally hours rating down my videos. Doesn't matter because they get into the Most Rated anyway.

Yeah I've always wanted to try Fallout 3 but at the moment I'm waiting for Empire: Total War which is coming next month.

  • Awesome review. Really cool game, haven't played it in years and years though.

I never knew the names and backstories and all that, either. Killing stuff was enough for me :D

  • Really good - 5 stars

  • Great!

  • i did - used to play bomb jack, pang and the dizzy series loads!!

  • haha was it me who told you that those skeletons could be defeated.

  • It was indeed. Didn't know if you were having a laugh or not and I did feel ridiculous trying to kill them the first time.

  • aha so theres a bit of golden axe knowledge youve added to your resume. lol

  • You can never have too much Golden Axe knowledge in life.

  • Melly suffers one point of damage for not having waited for this to upload this morning :P This is FANTASTIC!!! I cant believe how great it turned out. Well I can, considering how much work you put into it.

I even watched it in HD like you asked! Im surprised you are responding to the comments :-)

I always found myself choosing to be Tyris, probably just because she was a female, but there was always something about having more magic that allured me as well.

I cant wait to play this again now!

  • OH YOU SHALL

  • Its strange that I'd never heard of Shining In The Darkness until I watched this since it is apparently related to the Shining Force games which are my favourite Genesis/Megadrive games.

If you haven't played either of the Shining Force games you should seriously check them out, they're right up your alley I think :)

  • It's funny because it was only recently that I found out that Shining in the Darkness was part of a series and heard about Shining Force. Got it the other way round.

  • Shining in the Darkness is a prequel to Shining Force. But don't play it just because of that since the story is pretty weak. As TheFinalHighlander said it is a solid dungeon crawl so if you're interested in this kind of games you should give it a try.

  • Good game, but Legend (SNES) is my favourite hack & slash.

  • Yeah got Legend, it has a great atmosphere and some nice little touches like the guys that stagger back when you kill them.

  • Finally. An old school game review from David:D

  • And many more to get through.

  • Great!!

  • My personal favourite has always been Tyris. Always had a thing for amazons.

Also, I strongly agree with you concerning the difficulty of the game : it is very well balanced. I used to own a 3 games cartidge with Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Shinobi. I finished SoR in an evening, could never finish Shinobi. Golden Axe was the only one of the three games that was inbetween. I had a hard time beating it but eventually with some practice I was able to.

  • Yep Mega Games 2. Maybe I'm embarrasing myself by saying this... but I still find SoR quite hard. Mainly because of those two twins you have to fight.

I agree with you, Revenge of Shinobi is just plain hard. I got to the last boss when I was younger but when I play it now, I can't figure out how the hell I managed.

  • Probably because you refuse to press A much like you refuse to use Magic in Golden Axe :-)

  • Excellently executed as usual.

Yeah, Golden Axe was a game of my childhood as well. I have to admit, I was always a fan of Gilius Thunderhead also. I always thought he was a viking though during my childhood.

They also added Gilius as a character a tennis game that Sega made for the 360 and PS3.

  • I had meant to talk about how I'm glad that despite the presence of a dwarf, they didn't go the cliched Tolkien route and have elves, goblins etc. But everyone loves vikings so it's always okay to have the fantasy version.

  • great review

  • Thanks.
