30's music was an expression in restraint. Even the high tempo music was kept under control to create that dynamic feeling of tension moving with the counterpoint and staccato rhythm. The songs ran long too, without the "verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus" pattern they left you guessing and happily surprised at the end.
Today it would be classed as: easy listening music. In the first half of the 20th century it was all simply called: Dance music. Each decade had a unique genre. Ragtime, Jazz, Swing. Back then there were hundreds of dance styles and tens of thousands of dance halls, dance bands, and dance orchestras.
From vinyls to cassettes to cds to now the ipods. Crazy how everything changes. When I was little CDs were already out, but my dad had a record player from I guess way back in the day, and tons of records.
Lovely. I was told to get a Goldring GL-75 record deck with Lenco turntable & G800 stylus to play my old 78s through my hifi and its fantastic. The width of the groove in 78s varies by manufacturer & if the groove is too wide the stylus drags along the bottom & horrible sound - but you can get wider stylus
I bought this record in 1930 from a store that was going out of business because of the Depression. It was a sad time for America, but not a sad time for music. It was great back then.
I mean no disrespect, but I think it's great that someone your age is on the internet. My mom is only 71 and just refuses to learn how to operate the simplest electronics. I try to show her, but she says she can't. I tell her "whether you say you can't or you can, you're right". Anyways, just wanted to tell you that. :)
Great song and nice to hear it again. Very refreshing to see someone playing these old classics using a modern lightweight tonearm instead of destroying them by playing them on a Victrola with a steel needle and very heavy tonearm!
Turntables that have 78 rpm are around and still being produced. I used to think they were all but history until I saw a couple of DJ'ing decks /turntables like the one in this video. Project also produce them.
I'm trying to get hold of a few 78rpm records myself. Haven't looked very hard yet but I had the incentive when I bought my current record player.
i love cantor's, jones', and any version of this tune....this is very good also. the other side of this is a nice version of under a texas moon, i believe; maybe you could post it...thanks for your great work. so nice to have someone like you who takes great care to do a terrific job. keep it up.
This version and the one done by Great Britain's Bert Ambrose (Sam Browne vocal) are my two favorites.

Who's is the vocalist? He's excellent. Sounds a little like Eddie Cantor, but he can actually swing.

This version was used by Dick Hyman to do the arrangement for the Woody Allen's movie "Everybody Says I Love You"

Since you live in the UK, can you get hold of a copy of Bert Ambrose doing this?
I really like that version; I find it very smooth and polished and I like the Sam Browne vocal on it, too.

The song was originally featured in the film version of Eddie Cantor's "Whoopee". The vocalist is Art Jarrett...

I want to know about the turntable did you have to speed up the 33rpm sound? Or is the turntable 'effect'? How can you play original '78's? They
're great anyway
serapidus 3 years ago
The turntable plays in 78rpm speed.
