My Story-when i was 12 i started playing drums (2 years ago) not to long after my mom e-mailed me a vid and said this is amazing! it was Neil playing his YYZ solo from a show of hands and i just freaked it was an amazing life changing moment. i started looking deeper into rush and not more than 3 hours later noticed tom sawyer a song i've had on mp3 for 4 years. it was even better to realize i had a connection.i recently got all they're songs and am now so happy. plz reply with your story
Actually, they're not using pre-recorded parts per se (although I know what you're referring to). Typically w/Rush, when you hear bass & keyboards at the same time, one of 3 things is happening:
1. Geddy is playing keys while either he or Alex is playing Taurus bass pedals;
2. Geddy is playing low bass notes on the keyboard, with his left hand, while playing melody with his right;
3. Geddy triggers a sequencer on his synth to play a keyboard part while he plays bass.
They were really cool. Taurus pedals were actually analog synth pedals that functioned like pedals of a spinet organ. They were separated out, in a box that sat on the ground. Rather than go into a long explanation here, I'll send you a message with a Wikipedia link.
Alex actually played them more than Geddy did, particularly in the first half of their career.
does anyone hear know anything about the triggers they use as far as how it integrates with timing/midi, or is it all real time? I haven't been able to find any articles on how they trigger keyboard or background vocals...
The only significant difference from that performance to the version they play nowadays is the speed.... i can't get over how fast they used to play it. it's not like that anymore unfortunately....
thats chorus sound it´s by the classic Boss Ce-2, i think every body knows that, but you can get the same sound with the Modtone MT-CH, and it´s very cheap.
hey budy everyone has a differant taste in music! sure i did not have the right to say this is crap but that doesnt mean u can go on and isult me. what if you posted a comment on how crapy matallica was then evry one started insulting wouldnt u be mad and telling them that ur entitled to your opinion?
I wouldn't say that any particular artist was crap - I tend only to listen to and comment on stuff I like. There are tons of tunes/artists who I consider to be crap - but I wouldn't insult those who like it by stating so. As you imply - each to their own!
If this is crap then please explain to me how Rush has been around for over 30 years and are still selling out arenas all over the world. Rush also has 24 gold albums and 14 platinum albums(3 of which are multi-platinum).
Neal used to tend to carried away on YYZ with his timing and forget the fact that Alex and (especially) Geddy have about a zillion notes to play!!!!!!!!
I think Neil speeds up a bit in the beginning.... but no, nevermind... that would hint at the fact that he's actually human..... WE CANNOT SPEAK SUCH NONSENSE. they might put us in the Palace Of Corrective Detention... and we, Union 7-2521 cannot commit any more sins.
Amen to that I love the Steinberger I wish he would at least bring it out for a few of the 80's songs on the next tour. I have a Steinberger XT-2db it's not as nice as the original all composite models of the 80's but is still the best bass I've owned and I've played for 20 years. I still want the one Geddy's playing here.
I think the ever-constipated look on his face is epic. It must be hard to remember all those notes and to hit them at ear splitting level each night. :-)
yeah, he's got a LOT to remember - he talks about it in his books - had big problems in Brazil where his electronic kit got rained on and only half worked, so he had to substitute on-the-fly.
Just a thought, Have you ever tried holding the sticks Backwards? The butt gets a louder, harder sound, and Neil used to hold his sticks backwards, a habit he got from when his sticks would break and he couldn't afford new ones.
God that Steinberg bass sounds like shit. Im sorry i really hate to say it but it really does. Im glad he is using Fender Jazz bass' now. You can't beat those or a Ricki
personally, i dont think the steinberger is a bad sounding bass. look up blackened enhanced original bass on here and have a listen to the steinberger on there, yes it is a steinberger. :P
Wow. Uninformed? ^_^; just kidding. There is a solo, it's in the middle right after the third mini-solo. It's originally from the Exit Stage Left album and it goes for about three minutes. In my opinion, The Rythm Method and O'Baterista (his more recent solos) are better and more technically challenging.
One thing's for sure, all the dancers are totally white!(That's coming from a white guy) However, I'm not sure if that truly was a guy at 2:20... Just an observation.
Yea i agree with you man it sounds alot better done at the normal pace. Cutting half this song out is a tragedy no doubt im so glad they stopped doing that too.
Yeah this version is really awesome but it starts to really suck at 3:15
