Wow! Within the space of ten seconds (0:19 - 0:29) he grew a full beard an mustache! Incidentally, the correct title of this song is "Cigareets And Whuskey."
Henson and Sellers, such super talented guys. They must have had a lot of fun producing this clip. Winning combination! I viewed it at least a dozen times, laughed meself silly everytime!
@acouragefann true it appealed to the adults in the same way as bugs bunny and spongebob do. I know I was pasted to every Muppet Show that came on when I was a kid though. I think shows like this are made popular by kids, but made legendary by the adults
My grandfather wrote this song in 1947, and he was a wild man... I dig that people think it should be covered by the artists listed here... some of my favorites :)
@nashville1976 How fotunate you are to be the granson of a man who oviously had a wonderfully warped sense of humor! One thing people have is a love of laughter! Thanks go to your grandad for showing us this.
@sarahp43085 Absolutely Metallica, first I'm not a rabid fan of Metallica, there are a few songs of theirs I totally love but not their whole catalog. One song of theirs that is probably one of their better covers in "Whiskey In The Jar" an old Irish drinking song that may have roots back as far as the 17th century. Give it a listen then come back to this song and imagine it with some teeth.
And like onlyindreams001, if they have a pretty icon and tell you all the things you want to hear, like black males have been taught to ' work" white women, and that is why this reminds me of YT, the way Onlyindreams has this same kind of hold --- pretty icons and race traitors and playing both sides .....!!!!
I did this virtually the same for a high school talent show in 1983...screaming and thrashing a bass drum--absolutely brought the house down. Sellers was insane--and of couse a genius. GREAT MEMORIES, and thanks for posting this!!
Funny inside joke going on here...The pig up front is Dr. Strangepork from Pigs In Space, who's name and accent are based on Sellers' 1962 character, Dr. Strangelove. Together at last :)
A preachment dear friends you're about to receive, on John Barleycorn, Nicotine, and the Temptations of Eve......She taurght to Shmoke and to Drink Whuskey!
Thanks for posting this- my favorite episode- Peter Sellers was an Incredible actor! In the early 80's the muppets show was one of the best things goin!!
@Ssykun No no, that's not what he sings. He sings "HA--A-ONCE I was happy and a had a good life...", it's only when he meets the woman that the good life is over.

Can anybody answer me this: Why is this song on the Muppets Show? During their run, this show featured many "questionable" songs that would seem incompatible with a Muppets crowd. Am I wrong, were the Muppets geared towards adults?
The Muppet Show was played in the evenings and it was directed at adults. They produced the shows in Britain because no studios in the US believed that it would be worthwhile
How is this questionable? Did you listen to the words? He's preaching on the evils of John Barleycorn, nicotine, and the temptations of Eve - not glorifying them. A lament and warning from our broken, fallen narrator. Don't let the rollicking sing-along waltz fool you.
You're wrong. At the very least, it wasn't geared towards children. More like what would be called a "family show" in that children don't get most of the more risqué stuff anyway, while the adults don't mind the more innocent segments. FYI, one of the two muppet show pilot episodes was called "sex and violence".
How Ironic, this is what killed him- Peter Sellers FAMOUSLY was a chain-smoker, drank almost every day, and had many affairs... died much too young!!!
Wow! Within the space of ten seconds (0:19 - 0:29) he grew a full beard an mustache! Incidentally, the correct title of this song is "Cigareets And Whuskey."

The muppet show CERTAINLY isn't a kids show. It was watched a lot more by people in their 20s and up than children

I didn't notice until just now that the pig loses his cigarette through the course of the song...
Technically it's Dr. Strangepork, but that's definitely not his regular voice..
