Just finished reading the book, (book is free on amazon kindle). As a huge fan of Google Earth, I really enjoyed what you've put together. It is great that you've found a way to use a modern tool to put a timeless achievement into a context even a landlubber can appreciate! Nice work!
Just am in the middle of reading the Kindle version of the book and because it does not include the illustrations I thought I would do a search for them and behold was your video and KMZ file. Awesome and thank you - you made my day! All the best and fair winds...
Joshua Slocum was one of the first adventures I read concerning sailing. I have built about 12 sailboats from scratch with blueprints. Sizes from 5' to 26'. I am now 71yrs. old and do not sail anymore. I am from Louisiana and have lived on the coast of the Gulf all my life. It was thru Slocum's book that I accumulated my great respect for the sea. I have made short journeys, nothing to brag about, but I really do miss sailing. It was kind of you to go to the trouble, thank you so much.
He was planning to go through the newly finished Suez canal, but was chased by pirates and changed direction heading to South America.... Going around the world in the opposite direction ....
This is interesting from a boaters point of view as well as a computer programmer. I like the way you have leveraged google earth with travel literature.
I watched this video based on my friend activity. I thought that this might have been a relative of yours that made this and NO I didn't read the comments until I was finished viewing the video.
K Sarah, Sarah, what ever will be will be lol
Attempting to sing here! I am aware that the lyrics are wrong and all but this is the "cool version" haha
Works well. I have read the book many times & have not tired of it yet. A fascinating character with a nice sense of humour, what I find extraordinary is not only did he sail alone around the World but he built the boat himself. Of all the people that have sailed the oceans alone since JS how many can say they built the boat as well. And what a job he made of it.. "It leaked not a drop".
Thanks for putting this together. I googled to see if someone plotted a map but I never expected this goldmine!
