first of all.i can understand the sound of funk,jazz and rock n roll,flamenco and rhumba:P..do you think i cannot understand shredding?where do you thing shredding comes from..its a exaggerative modified and sometimes malformed version of classical music.a mixture of blues calssical and jazz(sometimes) scales, which became a trend in the 80s.all those tapping,arppegio,legato and tremolo tricks are of course clever and charming inventions

It's called damping. It's used so that when you're playing, and/or soloing, the other strings don't ring, or amke any excess noise you don't want or need.
