No Emperor Commodus was not a hero in the least bit in his time, he was even worse then the movie depicts him. In one night he killed its said to be over 100 defensless bears in the arena. True story dictates that he had his sister banished after the failed assasination attempt on his life, where she was eventualy murdered.

On top of it he charged the people that were forced to attend taxes, and charged the goverment 2 million of their currency for the privelage of watching the "Hero Hercules

this about Commodus giving himself in a gladiatorfight, just to prove the people, he's not afraid... this is hard for me to believe. Even with knowing that in this time, the title "ceaser" didn't mean open dictatorship, just hidden. Sure, popularity and the people's entertainment was everything to Commodus, but he could send someone to kill Maximus from the inside with plague, or with a knife in his sleep.

Even Maximus can be tired or injured, and his attention isn't always on the very top.
