Here´s the catch: Your paramilitary group? It will not be armed. It´s pretty much the Peace Corps, just for internal service.
And fuck, compulsory civil service like that has existed and does exist in multitudes of countries that are not even close to a police state, a dictatorship or something like that.

It's very socially justified considering in a country with no middle class like the US, only the poor serve in the military and only the rich have the power to start wars. I wish there was compulsory military service in the US but this program sound like compulsory litter clean up duty or compulsory reading to kids in hospital service. but to kooks it's a smoking gun.

BIngo. I myself have done my 9 months tour in the Bundeswehr and hell, I enjoyed it. Well, except for the first weeks of basic. :) And, funnily, I´m not really all that much of a cold-blooded government killer-robot because of it.
And then, you can opt out and go civil service anyway. You´d then go into the local fire brigade, become a emergency disaster worker or work as a nurse in a hospital or a home for old people.

such a fundamental distrust and lack of faith in young people. I knew 19 year old privates in their second year of service who formed their own opinions against military service even though everyone around them was encouraging 'unit cohesion' and obedience to UCMJ. Fresh out of basic training and they thought for themselves anyway. These conspiracy theories never take human nature into account unless it's assuming we are all apt to be nazi's.

I know. IN basic training they even asked people "If your captain ordered you to go home and kill your parents, would you do it?" One kid was like "Well, I mean, it would be a direct order right?" and the seargent looked at him and said "Your an idiot." lol. The kid was afraid to say the wrong thing to a sargent,,, the sargents point was, the wrong thing is to kill your parents,, idiot. I'm not doubting some people are dumb enough to follow any order, but dumb people don't last long.
