  • thats 148 pounds- with one arm -what strength.

  • Maybe somebody here knows -- what with kettlebell lifts being ballistic and all, is there some sort of upper limit to what a safe weight to lift is, like, relative to your body weight?

  • @billbixby1764

A safe weight is a weight you can lift comfortably for minute + sets using correct GS technique and without any flaws in your form. It's good to supplement GS kettlebell lifting with some squats, deadlifts and core exercises to help build up strength.

  • @ADAMONTAR I appreciate the tip -- I'm coming from power lifting so my power is pretty good...I found a site that sells heavier end kettlebells (like 150, 175, 200lbs) and was considering picking one up. They're really expensive, so I figured if I got one I would go high and work up to it, like a project I could chew on for awhile.

  • @ADMONTAR Some of the higher ones are close to my own bodyweight though, so like, I'm wondering if it would ever be safe to one arm snatch something like that. My olympic snatch is higher than my bodyweight, but I'm not sure if it has the same ballistic element. Any thoughts?

  • @billbixby1764

When starting girevoy sport, you would first need to start with a lighter kettlebell to help get your technique and form down and also work on your conditioning. The form is not that easy to master. You can snatch whatever weight as long as you using good technique and form. Even Valery who has been lifting bells for over 20 years, does not snatch a bell that is close to that of his body weight. I have seen videos of him doing a 48kg snatch for minute + sets.

  • @billbixby1764

The olympic snatch uses similar muscles to the kettlebell snatch, but using totally different form and technique. The olympic snatch is explosive and done for low reps. The kettlebell snatch is dynamic and you never place the bell down this is and done for minute + sets. Have you tried doing the kettlebell swing?

  • @ADAMONTAR I got into kettlebells through those Pavel Tsatsouline books -- I got a pair of 80 lb'ers to build power but I adapted to them pretty fast. I'm getting minute + sets but my work rate isn't very high yet. Have been doing the swing, the snatch, and something they seem to call 'the long cycle' which seems like a swinging clean and jerk or clean and push press.

  • @billbixby1764

Pavel Tsatsouline follows a different style of kettlebell lifting, RKC "hardstyle" and they use a different technique compared to Givorey sport. RKC style lifting is better for low reps. This is why in GS all bells have the same physical dimensions but different weight, unlike RKC bells. This saves you from having to readjust your form when lifting a heavier bell.

  • @ADAMONTAR That's interesting -- watching some of luroh's videos and realising I know less than I thought I did. I had the idea that volume was fixed at a certain work rate for 10 minutes and that, once you could do that, you progressed by raising the weight. I see he's lifting for an hour + though...(very impressive). I wonder, if that's the case, how do you know when to increase the volume and when to increase the weight?

  • @billbixby1764

In girevoy sport endurance is just as important. These are called marathons in which you can ift for an 1 hour. There is a video of Valery Fedorenko push press a 32kg kettlbell non stop for 1 hour and 42 minutes. I am not yet that experienced with girevoy sport as yet. I think Luroh will be able to provide you with a better answer of when to exactly increase the volume or bell weight. I am still also only practicing with 10 minute sets also and working on my form. Best of luck.

  • @ADAMONTAR Don't know anybody else who does this stuff, so just sort of wondering what weights are safe and appropriate, don't have a lot of oversight and really don't want to injure myself, so I really appreciate the excellent feedback, thanks!

  • @billbixby1764

There is a guy called "luroh" here on youtube. He has some really good videos on proper technique and form in all aspects of GS kettlebell lifting. I have learnt much from his videos.

  • @ADAMONTAR thanks for all your help, i will check it out.

  • I'm thinking maybe I should invest in some kettle bells and give this workout a try.

  • I used to powerlift and every once in a while when I enter a gym or retail store that sells weights I will grab the 100 lb dumbell and shoulder it and then press it as many times as I can just to see what I got. My style is unlike this though. I dont pause between reps and I dont use as much leg drive as I use mostly my shoulders to drive it. I managed 14 reps with a 100 lb dumbbell. For you kettlebell experts out there is this a good achievement for me having never worked with kettlebells?

  • @ruscccpsia2010 not bad at all

bear in mind that VF is not "pressing" the KB-- he is 'jerking' it-- the objective is NOT to isolate the movement to the shoulders but to get the weight up to lockout as efficiently as possible-- think of it as more like Oly lifting than P-lifting, but for ten straight minutes-- this is a demo at the Arnold, but in Girevoy Sport [GS] the the lifts [Long Cycle Clean & Jerk, Jerks, Snatches] are performed for ten straight minutes for total reps.

    GS is 'work capacity'

  • He can't even lock his arm out properly cuz he's been doin those halfassed swings for so damn long, he can't get any external rotation at his shoulder. I am waiting for this dude to drop that bell....

  • @simonaitathegreat inspite of what your saying the fact of the matter is that he's getting a 64kg kettlebell over his head with one hand and alot of times.

  • The Man ! VF

  • This wouldve been 1000x more impressive if his arm he sticks out to balance wasnt so limp wristed like he was disabled. Obviously he isnt; hes very strong though. Major kudos otherwise! :D

  • @ImBobTheCat it's called relaxation, genius.

  • @StrengthFromAbove83 its a mental game!

  • that's 12 lbs less that I am!

  • AWESOME,INCREDIBLE...

    he's an ALIEN

    ...my god....

  • What he said! I way 64 kg, and he jerks it like it was a paperweight!

  • dear mother of god...
