Look carefully at 45 seconds at Rick Mears outside rear tire. Wheelspin at 220mph. Unreal to watch. Amazing to think the cars use solid rear axles for high speed steering. On the limit racing at its finest. Rick Mears was the greatest speedway racer, no doubt.
@weallfollowmanutd I'd remember this was his back up car couldn't remember if crash it in the qualify or broke down. I'd know the next year he wreck in qualifying which he really injured himself.
The sound the cars made back then was outstanding. Even more outstanding...there was no handicapping the field to force them together. This was pure, real "combat" racing. Would that we could return to it, at mighty Indianapolis.
Yup i completely agree, that real "combat" racing was seen in the 89, 91 and 92 indy 500s close to the end of the race. This is what made me an indycar fan. I was 5 years old around this time and it was this type of hard fault racing is what made me the fan that i am today. I miss this kind of racing
That was Chris Mears, the 2nd wife of Rick Mears. They have now divorced but according to Rick's autobiography it was amicable as they just grew apart. Michael was married to Sandy Andretti and they did not last too much longer. Michael was remarried around 97 to a fitness trainer who whipped his can into shape! lol
I think things fell apart for Sandy when Michael had his disasterous foray into F1 and came back to Indy cars...after Monaco and places like that, she had no interest in the lesser world of American racing...*rolls eyes*
As for Chris Mears, she was a member of the team, not trying to make a fashion statement...
0:45 Leaving that rubber line. Power+ Balls= Amazing Indy Pass

Incredible racing, don't see much of this these days at Indy. I wish the apron was still there, it really made for good racing.

He tested an F1 car in the early 80's or late 70's and was quick ( Mears that is ) . Could have been a US world champion. We shall never know.

From 45sec, check out the tire marks Mears leaves with his right rear, so freakin' overboosted were those cars. Awesome!

@parnellijones Great call Parnellijones, Rick certainly laid down the rubber at the 45 sec mark.
