Due respect and gratitude to both film and those that flew threw the actual hell. Just play and listen to section 1.34-1.55, and consider the hundreds of thousands of men that those words applied to on both sides.
Read the book Joker One - this is a typical combat response. After awhile the only way you can function is to figure your already dead. Twelve O'clock High had technical advisers who were combat vets. The air war was brutal and was just as dangerous as the infantry back then although that has changed now with flying being safer.
What a load of B.S. this clip is. If you consider yourself dead, chances are you are going to have high casualty rates because of it. "Oh, look. I'm a flying dead man, Mr. Hitler. Come and get me!"
What about the line from Patton - 'no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. "
@DigitalGrotto I think your misunderstanding Savage's point. It's not a matter of be suicidal, it's a matter of don't fear death because you think you deserve to be preserved. In like manner, Patton would probably agree with him. The quote you provided was from Patton's speech which emphasized aggressiveness. Patton and Savage dealt with two different matters: Patton dealt with those who may be timid in battle; Savage dealt with people who just wanted to give up on everything.
@DigitalGrotto You seem TOTALLY clueless with a comment like this!? It's actually profound - he's addressing fighting men. A fighting man is not an individual, he is part of a force. That force is only a strong as it's weakest link. A man who is peace with the fact he may die, to the point that he considers himself already dead, has nothing left to fear. Individual thoughts of remaining alive then become a lesser priority than doing his job as part of the force, whether he himself lives or not.
@DigitalGrotto And your point is what? Are we now sharing our own domestic issues that have absolutely nothing to do with anything? OK, I have one - I just drank the last of my apple juice, poor, poor me: now we're square.
Meanwhile, your stupidity is still tremendous and you've just added "victim mentality" into the mix.
I don;t know; "Your already dead"--is that really a way to motivate people? I really find it hard to believe a USA air corp commander would try to motive his command that way.
The Mighty Eight and Bomber Command had appalling casualties. The Yanks had balls of steel going unprotected deep into Germany without escort. Head on attacks, flak and bitter cold. Bomber Command also had a massive casualty rate. Flying at night without fighter escort in Lancasters who were lightly armed. Looking out into the blackness for the night fighters. 55,000 dead and they got called war criminals. Scandalous. Proper men.
@HenryvKeiper Yeah. I am actually writing a paper about this movie right now, I wish it were on youtube instead of just clips of it here and there....
The USAAF lost more personnel early in WW2 than any other branch of the service, their contribution was huge but they paid a terrible price. Thanks to those who served!
@jokker73 60,000 Air crew. Took the Bomber Barons awhile to realize how important the "little Friends" were . It also took awhile to hit upon the right combination of targets to hit. It was a very steep and bloody learning curve . Contact the Office of Air Force History;they're very happy to help
This film is based on a true story. The village they destroy is Mortsel (Belgium). They fired on primary schools so 209 children and at least 8 teachers were killed.
What an awsome film - I first saw this 5 years ago when I was about 20 and I remember saying to my dad at the end - wow - they don't make films like that anymore...the script is just a work of art!!
Savage shows up the next day after Keith is relieved of command, and Lt. Zimmerman has committed suicide and they've already had a funeral for him? A bit quick don't you think?
Not nit picks. Savage comes down to the group in less than 24 hours and
Lt. Zimmerman has already committed suicide and they've held his funeral.
Then, less than 24 hours after Lt. Bishop is put in for a congressional Medal of Honor he is supposed to be assured of it and is treated like he's already been awarded it by the oh so by the book Gen Savage.
Dude! It's a movie, not real life. Maybe Zimmerman's memorial service was held the next day because his body was being shipped home for burial. In movies, action that relies on time passage has to be condensed, or the movie wouldn't run in 2 hours, it would take 20. You have to have an understanding of how motion pictures are made and why they're made that way.
The finest film ever made out the US 8th Air Force in WW II. This fine classic belongs in everyones dvd WW II collection. My all time favorite film .... a real tribute to the men of the Mighty Eighth...who never turned back while on a mission and took down a group of evil thugs !!!! Never tire of seeing this film and each time I watch it I pick up someting new.... great script & story line. Long live the 8th AF !!!!!!!!!!
@TCUNC76 this movie is definetly a good flick about the 8th, but I recently saw Command Decision with clark gable, and found that film to be equally as good, you should really check that out if you havent seen it already, clark gable plays a similar role as a brigadier general
Great acting by Gregory Peck

For one...
Savage shows up the next day after Keith is relieved of command, and Lt. Zimmerman has committed suicide and they've already had a funeral for him? A bit quick don't you think?
Soujurn 3 years ago
Maybe he was Jewish. They have to bury quickly.
Plus I'd need to see the movie again.
