  • It is very disappointing that Joe South is not included among Rolling Stone Magazine's Lists of the 100 Greatest Guitarists, or the 100 Greatest Singers, or nor are any of his songs included among RS's lists of the 500 Greatest Songs. (See December 2011 issue). Very disappointing, that being a winner of 2 Grammy Awards, that Joe South is not given more recognition.

  • Joe South's "Games People Play" is one of the finest songs ever written and recorded, IMO.

  • This guy ripped off Deep Purple.

  • @antdigger "This Guy" wrote the song (and many more that others made famous). Deep Purple covered it.

  • Holy shit, I never heard this good quality on even the radio

  • I like this version better than BJR's recording, although Lynn Anderson's Rose Garden fits better with her voice.

  • didnt joe south write alot of songs for people and co write im sorry just worrding cause these r the people that need to be in the spot light and i love this muics and im 20 i swear this is the muics what about my kids what r the oldies going to be to them?

  • hush is such an awesome song... down in the boondocks ain't no slouch either. big boss man.

  • The Joe South original is the best, though I'm also partial to Kula Shaker's fiery version.

  • Hi Joe South Fans! See Joe South at the beginning of AVM's new 'Hush' video (posted on YouTube). Joe graced us by playing his original intro on our 2011 re-release of his classic! Joe says of AVM's version, "It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!" Thank you, Joe. You are an amazing man! God Bless!

  • This is such a killer version of this song! I didn't know Hush was a Joe South song. Why didn't I? Why wasn't this a big hit?!? It makes me want to jump up and do dance moves that would kill my back. Sorry Deep Purple, Joe South owns this song. Always did, I just didn't know.

  • Never knew someone did "Down In The Boondocks" prior to Billy Joe Royal.

I always thought that Billy Joe Royal wrote it. Never knew it was a cover song until now.

  • Joe South is also the writer AND original singer of (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden, recorded in 1968, three years before Lynn Anderson's hit 1971 cover version.

Mr. South must feel rewarded that SO many artists have covered his songs.

  • 3 idiots missed the like button

  • @adudenamedrf Dude, i'm serious...I watched a way cool video here by Johnny Rivers about 2 months ago and i went to hit the "Thumbs up" and missed somehow and hit the Thumbs down! .i was THE ONLY Thumbs Down! I left a comment tho to tell them i was sorry and how id never sleep that night cus of my screw up.

  • the actual "hush, hush, thought I heard her callin' my name" line is from Son House's "Death Letter" (bada** song too)

(at least that's the first time I heard it) anyone else know any more history behind this song?

  • I am 20, I heard of Joe South from a Roger Miller song.

  • Sorry the best ist Billy Joe Royal any 1965 inthe nr. 1 to hitlist.

  • joe is great .. what a voice ... one of the best singers of that time !

  • Joe South is a very soulful singer love his voice

  • She broke my heart but I lover her just the same now.

  • Joe and Billy Joe were friends. They used to perform together at the Bamboo Ranch in Garden City with Buddy Livingston. He had a local TV show and would feature them often. Kula Shaker has an excellent verision cover of 'Hush."

  • looked amazing for 69 in that video, bloomin eck

  • love the drum break, love the song

totally aspirational. the four seasons sang about similar themes (economic differences making love difficult)

  • This is good very much same arragement as BIlly Joe Royals, listen to this song on Joe Souths "Classic" remasterd, the arragement is a mess, the guitar riff is left out.......

  • Great to hear Joe sing his own material. Thanks for posting!

  • I personally prefer Deep Purple's version, but Joe South's version is so awesome too! He gets more props for the song because he wrote it and preformed it well, though.

  • I'm afraid that you are mistaken on both counts. Joe South write the song and Billy Joe Royal was the one who had a hit with it.

    Thanks for playing though...

As for "Hush" Joe South wrote it and Deep Purple had the hit - but Billy Joe Royal also covered it. Joe South and Billy Joe Royal were under the same record label.

  • @murphicus Well, now you are partly mistaken. BJ Royal had the FIRST hit with "Hush". It was DP who later "covered" it.

  • @nachodaddy

You are correct. My focus was pointing out that South wrote the song.

  • @murphicus Thank you i didn't know that Joe South wrote this great song .

  • @nachodaddy Hush came AFTER down in the Boondocks, and was Billy Joe Royals first hit. Both songs were written by the famous song writer Joe South

  • @CorsairJock I already know all that. What's your problem?

  • @nachodaddy My Problem? Can't think of any off hand, but thanks for your concern, I'll let you know when I have one.

  • @murphicus And under the PROGRAMMERS/HANDLERS?

  • @bullit1976nl tnx bud..yer probably right..........

  • never heard the originals before; exciting stuff and GREAT guitar playing. thanx for posting! go joe south!

  • Joe's rendition of "Hush" is still my

    favorite...the production on these records

    was impeccable.

  • He wrote it....

  • yeah
