When I studied the Eastern Front and WWII in general, the turning point was not Stalingrad but actually Kursk 1943. The Germans savagely retook Kharkov in 1943 after losing Stalingrad. The reason the German front was pulled back was because Italy surrendered in 1943, pure and simple.
