You want a true assessment of government healthcare, talk to the veterans coming home. I happen to be one and I would not wish it on anybody. They say they can't keep up with the amount of people coming in, how are doctors going to deal with an influx of a few million new patients?
The general consensus is it is some of the best healthcare on the planet. Unfortunately, it has been underfunded recently by BushCo. Father in law is lifelong military naval officer, he would disagree with you. Public option is just a start, there are many other problems that need to be addressed. But without public option, we have no bargaining chip to change ANYTHING.
Preventative medicine is needed but you cannot force people to do it. I see it every day on my way to school, over weight people sitting on their porch drinking beer at 1000am in the morning. The only way to make them do preventative healthcare is to make them work for their welfare. And we all know Uncle Sam is not going to make that happen.
Work for welfare, Obama proposed expanding volunteer service for education grants.
One question - Are you willing to turn people away who need care despite money? If we are not willing to throw people to the curb, than we are SAVING money by having public option. A public option will bring down costs of private insurance too.
The government was charged with providing healthcare to the Native Americans and look how well that has turned out. Everything run by the government is either bankrupt or on the verge of bankrupcy, so how are they going to run a public option? If congress would allow people to buy insurance across state lines it would increase compitition. Of course that will not happen, because then politicians would lose contributions from insurance companies.
In regaurds to insurance being the cause of high healthcare, what about the doctor that bills the insurance company 150 dollars for a 15 minute office visit? That comes out to be 600 dollars an hour. If your local chevy dealer charged you that same price to change the oil in your car, you would shit your pants and want to speak to the service manager. Maybe doctors should have a flat rate for services given.
If your doctor is engaging in that kind of overcharging, then you ought to dump him and and find another doctor, the same way you would not pay that much for an oil change. Surely you are not advocating for government oversight of oil change fees? Keep the government out, shop around for a better doctor.

Your "choice" of doctor are the cheapest of the lot, the ones willing to accept lowest reimbursement rates, usually newer, less experienced docs without an established patient base. I went to school with lost of Canadians, for all the problems they have, not one said they would switch for our system. They were outraged at the prices and lack of coverage here. In canada, you can buy a good private plan for cheap because there is public plan. Competition is good!
Competition is very good. The concern with government involvement is the potential monopoly that will be impossible to get rid of. There are many in England that wish they never passed the NHS, and realize it will be impossible to get rid of it now.
Don't forget preventative medicine is the best medicine. That is a huge factor with costs. Unfortunately, it goes beyond a public option. We need to change food in public schools, get PE back in schools, eliminate trans fats, etc.. But it "infringes on our God given right to eat crap sit around and watch TV" So the question is what do we want? What society do we want to live in? You can't rely on govt to save or create all the jobs. All govt can do is level out the huge spikes of ups and downs. (Which is why with BushCo who deregulated etc...we had these huge spikes of ups and downs) Economic stability is a good thing.
Having huge spikes where winner takes all and losers start jumping off buildings or losing life savings is bad.

Father in law is lifelong military naval officer, he would disagree with you. Public option is just a start, there are many other problems that need to be addressed. Preventative medicine is needed but you cannot force people to do it. I see it every day on my way to school, over weight people sitting on their porch drinking beer at 1000am in the morning. The government was charged with providing healthcare to the Native Americans and look how well that has turned out. Everything run by the government is either bankrupt or on the verge of bankrupcy, so how are they going to run a public option? If congress would allow people to buy insurance across state lines it would increase compitition. Of course that will not happen, because then politicians would lose contributions from insurance companies.

In regaurds to insurance being the cause of high healthcare, what about the doctor that bills the insurance company 150 dollars for a 15 minute office visit? That comes out to be 600 dollars an hour. If your local chevy dealer charged you that same price to change the oil in your car, you would shit your pants and want to speak to the service manager. Maybe doctors should have a flat rate for services given.

Your "choice" of doctor are the cheapest of the lot, the ones willing to accept lowest reimbursement rates, usually newer, less experienced docs without an established patient base. I went to school with lost of Canadians, for all the problems they have, not one said they would switch for our system. They were outraged at the prices and lack of coverage here. In canada, you can buy a good private plan for cheap because there is public plan. Competition is good!

Don't forget preventative medicine is the best medicine. That is a huge factor with costs. Unfortunately, it goes beyond a public option. We need to change food in public schools, get PE back in schools, eliminate trans fats, etc.. But it "infringes on our God given right to eat crap sit around and watch TV" So the question is what do we want? What society do we want to live in? I for one want to live in one that takes care of it's poor and is healthy.

Boy have times changed. I remember when mindless automatons would simply chant "Resistance is futile. Your technological and biological distinctiveness will be added to our own" Now they tell us that we cannot flush a toilet after peeing.
