After the military takeover of Estonia, the USSR in June 1940 demanded a shadow government to be set up that subsequently dissolved Estonia's civil society, sovietized its government institutions, nationalized the economy and shut down free press and civic organizations. In an atmosphere of terror and massive human rights violations, a puppet parliament was elected in July 1940.
Estonia seems to be the only Baltic country that made any real economic progress after 1991. LV and LT are still behind (or equal to) Russia in terms of GDP. Estonia is a bit ahead, though... good job :)
I know the soviet baltics hated the soviets (as they should) however I found them to be anti-american and anti-soviet. I know the soviets POUNDED them with anti-american propaganda since they were a possible flight and dect risk since they hated the soviets. Is this why they dislike us or do we have some kind of history?
My Grandmother's and Grandfather's families were putten to the train to Siberia! My Grandfather and Grandmother ran away from their home when Soviet soldiers came to their door. They ran through the forest, to a field of wheat. I'm not sure what did they do next, but either people related to me were there! F**K SOVIET UNION!

You could not say if you tought negative about goverment or you were sent to prison and tortured or killed like in nowdays also in Russia. You did not have an apportunity to visit west countries which were not in soviet union.Apartment wos free but most of time you had to wait it years.You could not buy goods from out of union. Same time there weren't enough localy producted food for people. People had to stay hours in queues to get simple products like bread and good meat was mostly a dream.
Thanks alot, but I might be wrong, that people were allowed to travel to western countries if someone invited them only? Because we had once friends from the Soviet Union and they were invited. That was only the way they could come here Finland. Some people also escaped from Soviet Estonia, right?
the finnish tourists were quite um... often and they smuggeled in pieces to improve the soviet TV's, so people coud see the finnish channels, it was one of the things that helped us to get free
