  • An excellent video. Direct and SUCCINCT! I really dislike when videos feature 5 minutes of blah blah blah before showing what they are supposed to show. This video was quick and informational. Thanks!!

  • Marshall Makes 2 cabs with Greenbacks, the 1960TV and the 1960 with the gray grill cloth on it. Which cab is best for those greenbacks? As the TV cab is 3 inches taller than the other 1960 Cab. Or would I just be better all around getting a 4x12 made from Avatar or Whitebox cab?makers.

  • Hi man i have one question please is possible use the marshall jcm 800 reissue 100w with Fender cabinet 2x12 celetion vintage 30 120 w on full power ...thanks great videos.

  • @SAR3939

I wouldn't do that. Maybe if you make your amp 50W... here's how you do it:

Take 2 of the 4 power tubes out (the two from the outside, or the two from the inside. always remain symmetric. NEVER remove two from the left or two from the right)

Then if you have a 16 ohm cab, set your amp's output impedance to 8 ohms. For an 8 ohm cab, set the amp to 4 ohms... (because half the tubes = half the impedance)

That's it. This makes a 50W amp out of your 100W. Plus you will have 2 backup tubes

  • I have a marshall head & cab is there any benefit or drawback to running one impedance over the other?

  • @AASTRANGE Some would say there in a tonal difference.

  • @Alexanderjamesguitar Can you put a head on those straight verisons or only the angled one's?

  • if i wanna run one head in a full stack mode how do i go about hooking it up

  • so if u have 2 16 ohms 4x12 cabs, you plug one on the 4ohm side and one on the 16 ohm side and switch the channel to stereo. correct?

  • hi. one question: do you know what impedence each speaker in a standard 1960a cab has? 8 or 16? im asking because i wanna swap 2 of them with v30s, maybe x-pattern.. i believe ive got the older version of the cab, but also with 4 to 16 ohm mono and 8ohm stereo option. thanks.

  • PLEASE someone help. I'm going to be buying a Marshall JVM205h with a 1960A Cab. What OHm do i use, it has a 1x4, 1x8, 2x8, 2x16 and a 1x16. Thanks for the help. Im a noob with this stuff

  • hey man i was wondering if you could help me out i have a mesaboogie half back 4/12 cab 8 ohms speakers c-90 in the top and evm 12l in the bottom and im wondering what the ohm is the cab

  • @Guinzarth

I would set the cabinet to 8 ohms and run it into the 4 ohm section of the DSL 50. Hope that helps.

  • made in england :) the best !!!

  • @LotocSabbath You can, but it will sound like muck.

If you just want to use it to jam in your room, it should be fine but for playing live you'll either need a head or to plug your effects processor into the mixing desk.

If you have a combo, you can use that as a master for your cab until you can afford a head.

  • can i connect a combo AVT100 and use it as a power head to a 1960A cabinet?

  • @scorpion65100 Yes you can. Just match your impedances correctly. I.E. lower impedance on the amp then of the cabinet.

    4 ohm amp

    8 ohm cabinet

    8 ohm amp

    8 ohm cabinet

    8 ohm amp

    16 ohm cabinet

  • @Alexanderjamesguitar

    thanks Alex

  • dose this work for all amps and cabinets?

  • My speker connes mace a noze when i putt 9 volt bettiry aginst the cord. I tacke it that this is a gud sihnn.

    \thsank ypu for the vidio.

  • @gavinplaysbass Thats great Gavin. I think you should lay off the drink.

  • i have a 1960A JCM900 box and a peavey valveking vk100 amp (with 4, 8 or 12 ohms usable) . it has 2 outputs (paralleled) beside them there's some info: 100W RMS/40V RMS.

could you tell me how to correctly connect my amp to my box? i would be really really happy!!! thanks :)

  • @EVguitarsNW Just make sure the OHM rating on the amp is LESS than on the Cabinet.

Run your amp at 4 ohms and your cabinet at 8 ohms. This is the safest match.

  • @Alexanderjamesguitar can u explain why the amp should be 4 ohms

  • @EVguitarsNW i just have it on the 16 ohm setting on the amp and 16 ohm mono to speaker

  • Would i be able tp hook my traynor ycv50 combo amp up to this cab? If so, which input do i put it in and do i put it on mono or stereo?

  • @theoutubecelebrity Yes. Use the MONO section of the cabinet. I would personally use the 16 ohm mono side on the cabinet.

Your traynor combo probably runs at 4 or 8 ohms. Either way your safe plugging into the 16 ohm side of the cabinet.

  • Great video!! It really seems like you know what your talking about!

Question..with having only one input on my 5150 cab, I did your test and it reads 13.8. So running my 5150 head at 4 ohms is okay? And what's the advantage in running 4 ohms if there is one?

One other question...if I wanted to run both my Marshall 1960 and the 5150 cab, what would I set the Marshall cab at, well Mono right? But what input, 16 ohm? Then, should I be running the 5150 head at 8 ohms?

    Thanks!!

  • @jtettes

If your cabinet is reading 13.8 (16 ohms) you should run your head at 8 ohms. You want to match or get as close as possible to your cabinet ohms.

Your head ohms should always be lower or matched with your cabinet ohms.

Set your Marshall cab at mono and the 16 ohm side. Set your head at 8 ohms.

8 ohm head, 16 ohm cabinet + 16 ohm cabinet.

    Hope that helps.

  • @Alexanderjamesguitar

Thanks man!! I went out and bought some new Planet Waves speaker cables and hooked them both up...I think the Marshall cab sounds killer running with the 5150 cab!! So running the 5150 head at 4 ohms forever, does it just take away from the life of the tubes?? Or can it actually cause damage? I suppose I should be looking into replacing the tubes? Any easy tests you have for checking the tubes with a multi-meter?

    Thanks again!!

  • @jtettes You can not check tube life with a multi-meter. You need specialized tube equipment to do this. Running a amp/cabinet mismatch can ruin your tubes. Some amps are very sensitive and some are not at all.

Never run your amp higher ohms than your cabinet. You will kill your tubes and output transformer.

  • @Alexanderjamesguitar I have a Mesa Boogie 4x12 rectifier speaker cabinet and a Genz Benz 2x12 G Flex speaker cabinet. I also have a Peavey 3120 amp head. Please tell me what ohms setting my amp should be for both cabinets used together and then when I use them separately. Actually, the Mesa is on layaway. Would I be better off getting a cabinet like the Marshall 1960A 4x12 for example? Your prompt advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Is it okay for me to run my 8 ohm VOX, through my 16 ohm Marshall 4x12?

  • @Glockenator

    Yes that is fine.

  • @Alexanderjamesguitar Is it always good to go over, but never under?

  • @Glockenator

Your head ohms should always be lower or matched with your cabinet ohms.

  • I have a Marshall 4x12 1960A lead cabinet set on 4 ohms.

The impedance reads 6.7 ohms (mono switch)

I just replaced the tubes to my Peavey Ultra Plus head and want to make sure I have the best impedance setting to save the tubes.

Should I leave the head setting on 4 ohms (where it's been for years)

or flip it to 8 ohms (seeing as the ohms reading is leaning closer to the 8 ohms?

  • @sonicbondage Hey mate.

If your multi meter is reading 6.7 ohms that would mean you have an 8 ohm cabinet. The reason why it would read like that on a multi meter is at 0:46

I would suggest setting the head at 4 ohms into your 8 ohm cabinet.

  • Hey man! Great video! I've got a Question for ya that I'd really appreciate some help with as I can't seem to find an answer anywhere! I own a Peavey 5150 Head (120 Watts) into a Marshall 4x12 Slanted Cabinet. The Cabinet has only one imput. So my Question is, what should I set the impedance level for on the Head (4, 8, or 16 ohms)??? If you could help me out here I'd Really appreciate it, even a best guess would be helpful!

  • @MrBillystacy You can afford a Marshall amp....and your electric bill worries you? lmfao ; /

  • Hi, my setup is 1960A with JVM410H head. At the rear of JVM, there are 2 8 ohms outputs to speaker. Can a 1960A be plugged two 8 ohms outputs from head at the same time (plug into 8 ohms right and plug into 8 ohms left at the same time at back of cabinet) if switched to STEREO?

Now using 4 ohms from head plugging into left side at back of 1960a with switch MONO.

    Thanks

  • @MrBillystacy Hi.

You can not switch to stereo using your Marshall Cabinet when plugged into your head (16 ohms). This would give you 16 ohms at your head and 8 ohms at your cabinet. That will damage your amps tubes and soon enough the output transformer.

  • Hey man, thanx for the tip.

  • Hi, very helpfull vid. I have a 1970's cab and the multimeter reads 12.00/13.00 ohms. But when i set the head to 16.00 ohms it breaks up and sounds terrible. But with the head set to 4 ohms it's fine. Any ideas?

  • Hey mate. Thanks for commenting.

If your cabinet is reading 13 ohms (16 ohms) on the multimeter and you set your head at the 16 ohm setting it should be fine.

Are you using proper SPEAKER cable?

There could be an issue with the amps 16 ohm setting.

If your head can run at 8 ohms, it is fine to use your 16 ohm cabinet.

Just remember to never plug your head (lets say 8 ohms) into a LOWER impedence (like a 4 ohm cabinet) this is bad and will damage your output transformer.

  • Thanks for your help.

  • Hi 123lovegun.

Are you talking about switching the cabinet to stereo and then plugging your TSL into BOTH the left and right inputs?

To me that wouldn't make much sense. You might as well just plug your TSL into either the 4 ohm side or the 16 ohm side. (4 ohm side = 4 speakers, 16 ohm side = 4 speakers, both 8 ohm stereo sides = 4 speakers)

You will simply still be using 4 speakers.
