Great song from 1963, a great year for music. A year later and you might never have heard this song on the radio. One of Pookie's best efforts. I remember my brother and I used to say they were using a leaky toilet to get that watery sound. Who knows? In any event, thanks for posting this classic.
@speedy45rpm Never thought of a leaky toilet, but you know, it's got me wondering? I was a radio freak back in 63 and never heard this played. Actually never heard it until I found the record, I guess we owe it all to our DJs who played the same old xxxx.
@dowopper51 Yes, the DJs still had power over the playlists back then, which was a much better arrangement than the rigid formulas that began creeping in in the late 60s and eventually took over all but a few battling independents who actually care about the music. This song was quite common on the black stations in Philly, but would also be heard on the mainstream rock stations as well. Thanks so much for your great posts -- I noticed you had The Headliners on there, another Philly favorite.
The interesting thing is that Pookie came to N.Y. to record this and Lloyd Price forget to make arrangements so Pookie had to sleep on a park bench most of the week.Great tune.
Just one of the many wonderful songs by Pookie and the Spaniels. They were great guys to hang out with. Truly miss Pookie for there will never be another.
Pookie and the Imperials with Sammy Strain doing the high work. Pookie had left the Spaniels during this period and Billy Taylor of the Castelles was brought in to do the lead of the group to rave reviews. When Pookie came back several years later he so liked Billy Taylor's voice that he kept Billy in the Spaniels! More details on the Black Swan website!

That water sound is JUST like what's heard on "Because of You" by Rome and Paris. I think it's from around the same time.

Sad, we've lost so any great artist in the last 10-20 years. How did you know him/them?

His manager was a very good friend of miine and I was associated with the Unifics, so we sort of hung out at various times. He was great.
