This demo vid sold me on buying one that I found locally for $200. Kind of a poor man's PPG (has a couple of waves from those wavetables - most notably #14 and the same filter chips), and this is coming from an owner of two Wave 2.2s. Try one if you can find one - and make sure to get a K3m as a polyphony expander. Very simple to program and surprisingly versatile for "digi-log" sounds. Just don't expect the same brightness or sharp envelopes of those German beasts - can be very warm though.
I have never seen a Kawai K3, however, I had a Akai AX80 back in 1986. This Kawai K3 very much reminds me of the Akai Ax80. Were these two fairly simular ? By the looks of the interface, it even looks a ( Little ) simular to the AX80.
Great demo of this synth. I have had a K3 for 5 years now and will never sell it. It's built like a tank and weighs a tonne. I use it in about 75% of my music recordings. See Autumn Rain on My Channel its all K3
amazing vid man, totally convinced me to buy the k3. much thanks, i love it! seriously, best demo i've watched - you really show what this thing can do.
This thing is capable of making the most haunting string pads. I have both the keyboard K3 and the rackmount K3M, I midi them together to get a 12-voice polysynth in 'overflow' mode. Every bit as good as a Roland Super JX or MKS70.
@brofjw - You can get the modwheel effect by going into edit mode, selecting LFO/osc and then turning the alpha dial. Would have been nice if they included a mod wheel, but oh well, you can't have it all.
hey guys i have had this keyboard for a while and for the life of me i cant figure out this memory unit business. So if someone could please help me, it would be much appreciated.
I love mine even though it has smashed keys from the braindead bastard who shipped it to me. I need to replace some capacitors inside it though, there's a bit too much power supply hum.
i just got mine. its a really dope keyboard. easy to program. I wish it had a mod wheel though. why is the korg z1 the only keyboard with x-y pad? so lame. thats the dopes t feature ever. every synth should have one!
I'm a big fan of Kawai. Almost always underrated. In a way that's good because Kawai gear can be found cheap. I have a K5M. K4r and a K3M. All have their own distinct characteristics. The K3 is very easy to program and a hell of a synth in it's time.
The K3 is one of the most underated synths on the planet;it can do beautiful pads, weird boards of canada drones and leads, sfx's really gritty dirty bass(I have shook the tiny window in my vocal booth with the bass this produces). If you see one of these for sale grab it immediatley because one day they are going to be desireable.
If this had mood on it it would go for a fortune;Great synth trust me get one.
It's SSM2044. Opened mine just now to check :) The oscillators in this thing sucks at low frequencies, but it can do some nice stuff, and it was dirt cheap.
I got you beat, a colleague of mine at work gave me one for FREE last year... along with around 7 other old synths, all free! I was amazed. Apparently a fellow he used to work with passed away and this fellow's wife asked my friend to come pick up all of his old midi equipment. He never ended up using it and never had the time to get into it. So he gave it all to me. Among them was a TX-7 and D-110 rackmount, all in almost perfect condition.
Dude love your music .......i play a lot like you do .......you must be a person with huge creativity. This type of music comes mostly from nowhere and thats what i loke about it. It is very bad that it sounds outdated tho. xcellent by me.
The K3 is an amzing synth its is so underated.I use it for making strange background textures for my music.
Yes I learned the hard way when I picked the synth up to move it and put too much pressure on the keys....SNAP!!!!one of the keys snapped I was gutted.
the k3 is a strange beautiful synth... IMO the best features of this machine are 1)the lfo (7 waveform, and the 'chromatic random' waveform, i.e. sample & hold, is fantastic); 2)the filter; 3)the built in chorus (very good, but only presets...); 4)the additive user waveform (did you succeed in creating some cool waveform? it's really hard)... btw, good work jexus
The LED aren't fading, the "scan rate" in the synth is about 25 Hz, close to recording frame rate, so when frame refresh matches LED refresh they look blank.
If you are talking about the small silver square in the upper left, that is the external RAM cartridge. It provides storage for an additional 50 patches, I believe.
I've been unsuccessfully trying to get a mint K3 for the past 2 months. But I recently got a Microwave XT so I dont feel too bad. Wavetable synthesis is untouchable.
Hey Dave! Didn't know you were a big fan of Jexus aswell hehe. All the videos are ace, I enjoy them alot. This one is no exception. Love the riffs and sounds combined with the synth classics.

How do you get the effect of a modwheel on a K3? I don't see one. Is it some separate Kawai-explicit control?
