Yusuf Islam aka Cat Stevens - Documentary on his Life (Part 1)

Since becoming a huge Cat Stevens fan, I can't help but wonder if he has any regrets about leaving the music business for so long. He says he doesn't but...how can someone with such god given talent who becomes one with his instruments just give it all up and not look back. Spirituality is one thing but it can co-exist with music. And by the way, can he PLEASE trim his beard?? There's still a beautiful face under there!

@piper696969 we muslims believe music is wrong, not only muslims tho, alot of famous people have said so too, Plato from Greece for example (one of the most famous philosophers) said that we should be careful what kind of music our comunity listens to cause it may sweep away our morals, i still believe there are good messages in hes music tho ^^

and for the beard, its obligatory for all muslims man to let theire beards grow for atleast 1 fists lenght :)

@JoakimAcosta: Salam, my brother or sister, as a muslim I must say that music is debated issue amongst the scholars. I personally dont listen to music because I want to be on the safe side. But we cannot call is Haram/Forbidden just because a scholar says it is. Secondly, the beard is not Farz. because ONLY ALLAH makes what is farz, and haram. And the reference you give of the 1 fist length please provide a source to for it(Dont say your imam told you because an imam can say anything) Jazakallah

But all im trying to say is that farz is something that is mandatory, and is important to have a beard for muslim to show a distinction between the muslim and the non muslim. But in no way is it farz. ALLAH did not make it farz. So it is not a sin to not have a beard. But rather it is recommended.

Allah says if we want to earn hes love, we must love / follow the way of Muhammad (saw).

It isnt a sin to not have a beard, one who cannot grow a beard, its not a sin on him, but it is a sin to shave down to the skin.

So our scholars cannot say that something is farz without the commandment of ALLAH. Doesnot matter if its islamqa.com or askimam.org or any other website. We should respect our scholars with the utmost respect. But we cannot listen to them when they make thing halal and haram on their own. Thats all im saying.

there are hadiths too which say whatever Muhammad (saw) says, is as if Allah Himself would have said it.

which means that whatever Muhammad (saw) commanded us to do is Fard.

you are completly right that the scholars isnt the ones that say what is fard or not, i never said that, im talking about what Muhammad (saw) said.

@mujahir1. its brother, anyway the culture of the time had a custom of growing a beard. And thus the Prophet did it. And yes there is an ayat is the Quran which states that "What Allah and his Messenger have decided, do not put you own opinion in it"(Paraphrased). My brother lets bring this to hotmai or something. Each to his own. I respect Cat/Yusuf's decision to go religious. I personally think some people are predisposed towards needing to fill their "God part of the brain", whether its Christianity or Isam, just as some are predisposed towards alcoholism or gambling. But if that's what he feels he needs to fulfill himself then so be it.

i have read other interviews with cat stevens where he explains that he chose the more conservative interpretation of music in islam "just to be on the safe side." 

now i have no problem with him ceasing to make commerical music for a buying audience. but he chose not to make any music at all, believing it conflicted with islam.

that's the problem with all religion - too much is open for interpretation.
