LOL in the slow variation she shows "flap on the right foot, heel drop right foot, heel drop left foot, then slap up with the left foot". Then when she does it fast she goes "flap right foot, left heel drop, right heel drop then slap up left foot". That would be the right way so for those who actually want to learn this step, take note of that difference. It will help to get your weight in the right place first otherwise this step will feel very unco when it should just roll together with ease.
I'm so pleased that I've found your videos!! I've just started having tap dancing lessons but I missed the lesson for the week that everyone learned the Manhattan. After watching this video roughly 10 times, I can now do it!!!! Yay me!!! I can't wait to show everyone at dance class this week :)
Also when she demonstrates, she's doing her break down version the wrong way and when she speeds up she does it the right way.Tap step starts on the right foot then heel onto the left then heel on the right pickup heel toe heel.
but you can do it either way cuz if you don't want to move from side to side, you don't switch feet on every one manhattan. it's hard to explain what i mean but it looks fine if you do it, but you have to use the same foot more than once.
When I was a little girl, we used to call it The Kitchen Step! Why, I have no idea! I think I like all of your names better.
I do this step subconciously when I'm bored and antsy, haha! I can still hear my tap teacher singing it in my head...flap heel heel brush heel toe heel!
HAH I have this step in a upcomeing show, they call it the shirly temple and thinking step at my Tap Place.I like it,it took me about an hour of constant practise to get all the sounds right at a good tempo.
Response to msbennet36 , man did I ever notice the inconsistencies in her breakdowns , from the first one just after she said what did I just do , to the 2nd breakdown one . She uses a heel drop of the opposite foot just after the brush-back, and in the 2nd she does it completely different and then again changes it to the 1st way, confusing, but it does give variety of steppes . I a beginner and I hate that .
No, it's not a crime. However, there are better terms to use to make it easier for your students. You should do some research into a more accepted terminology. The term "drop" can be used to describe a drop of the heel OR toe, so you should be more specific. But as a professional hoffer, I do appreciate that you are educating others about the lost art of tap dancing.
For your information lilmrnangel92.......I'm doing research on how people claim to be dance teachers but don't know how to teach what they preach! I take it your a student huh? Don't hate just because you know her and she sucks!!!
No wonder i couldnt find this step move, they call it something diffrent then I do,anyways yeah at my tap place they say "Fa-lap Heel heal,Toe Heal Toe Heal"
Thanks for the video, Connie is great - my only issue is that in the slooow breakdowns, she's actually dropping different heels. So the breakdowns end up different from the actual step, and it makes for an awkard weight shift. Otherwise very helpful, though.
She doesn't specify which heel should drop first after the flap. It's really good to know both ways, but make sure you decide to do so.
