@flycatchful Maybe, didn't see them working at all, just that slow death roll. Tail heavy? No flight check in the video but if it was reversed it would have snapped faster to the right. Looked like a total loss. Shame it was a nice plane.
Differential thrust or a strait forward stall? It's pretty hard to judge airspeed and orientation when you don't get signals from your sight, butt, and ears. I'm picturing myself making all kinds of errors. Errors in scale esp if I did RC on smaller planes. I was also thinking that a typical test sequence is taxi, fast taxi, hop, pattern, then fly. Hope you are still at it, and hope you enjoyed the rebuild. You have guts to put this up. :)
I've been there! Had the incorrect model selected on my JR 8103. Took off and could not figure out why the plane was flying so bad. Until it was too late. Now I have a pre-flight check list that I mark off with a sharpie. Not a mental checklist.
The ailerons were reversed!?! What a crying shame, Common mistake though... there is another vid here on youtube of a gorgeous p-51 that saw its demise due to the very same oversight... I recently crashed my new rc heli because I guess I didn't set it flat fast enough, did'nt do a proper pre-flight check, and it shot off to the right on take off. It cost me a set of new blades... nothing compared to this beauty. Hate to see this...These rc beasts can be tricky.
Nice plane, shame about the ailerons. Nobody's immune to it, I had it happen once w/ a sport plane I built. Managed to get it up high enough and buy some time until a buddy could bring a screwdriver out to the flightline and hit the "reverse" toggle switch they had on the older Futaba's at the time. A veteran flier I was pals with told me in 50 yrs of flying he's seen one incident where the pilot had not crashed with reversed ailerons. Disciplined preflights from then after...
been flying for years, never happened til other week, flew a newbies plane for him after setting everythin up the day b4.
flew it and crashed then noticed ailerons wrong, reversed, he had decided that I had done it wrong so reveresed them after I set them up lol, I always check his planes now.
but by the time I realised plane was in ground. no damage though-epo foamy.
must have been aileron failure. he was hard left on the rudder if you notice so i think he was aware. unless god forbid he got his rudder and ailerons confused on the trans.
Wow, sad to see such a nice model go down. I practice often on G4 using flight failures enabled. I have gotten pretty good at recovering from servo reversals and radio interference. Glad to say that I have not needed to call on this practice experience so far in real flying but am confident that with the G4 sim practice that the outcome would be good.
Reverse fitting of controls is not a problem confined to model aircraft builders. Some years ago the CO at an RAF base called all pilots to a hangar. He sat in the aircraft (I think it was a Lightning, maybe not) and went thro' pre-flight of flying surface controls, calling out the stick movements as he did so. . Pilots were then asked if they had noticed any problem. None had, despite the fact that a rigger had rigged the aileron controls so that aileron movement was reversed.
In a perfect RC world EVERY pilot has the discipline to do a routine and correct ck of the aircraft prior to putting it in the air. It's not a perfect world. I'd like to have a dime for every plane crashed due to incorrect aileron hookup. That probably accounts for 33% of most accidents. I took off that way once, but managed to keep it up high until a buddy could flip the microswitch on the back of my Futaba xmtr. (Yeah, it was a while ago) Save the lectures; hopefully the pilot learned.
At first I thought it was torque of the two engines and maybe an improper trimming. But after reading the info and comments, it makes sense. It's a shame when mistakes like that happen. Honest yet... Almost ignorant. Anyway I'm sorry for your loss. Looks like a great plane.
in over 30+ years of flying r/c planes i have destroyed over 50 planes every thing from bad electronic to just plain dumb thumbs. its no big deal. it was all done in the name of fun.they can all be replaced.
ouch!!!!!! i've got the shell of a P51D mustang here at my place...think i'm just gonna sell it. crashed my electric ducted fan jet (made of polystyrene type material) twice now and have managed to repair it. but with the mustang shell being made of balsa wood, i dont think i wanna destroy something so beautiful
Good point about having someone else check your work. This is good advice when homebuilding a real full-scale plane too. My friend did a gret job building a Spitfire then hand launched it at the field with his transmitter set to another model!! It was repairable though.
Common mistake newbies make is stalling the plane. They think they are being "safe" by climbing real steep to get altitude fast, but this is the result.
Insulting a complete, and total stranger is low. I am 11 years old, and this, for a fact is a basic principle understood by children much younger than I. And you are not a child. You are a full grown human being...a very impolite human being. Im sorry to say but my stepdad (the nice man you insulted), is to mature to deal with your insults. so please, if you are going to recklessly swear at people you dont even know, swear at someone who is willing to put up with your crap.
The ailerons should never be backwards! you should have at least one copilot that watches on close taxi out prior to takeoff confirming correct movement. When you get into this size model, you need to put on a pilots hat and pay attention. PS: its ok to make that mistake , as I have, early on with say your trainer or light sport plane. NOT with a big DC3. By the time you get into this caliber of airplane your skill level and method should be much more refined.
@XBoeingCapt : Way to go there, XB! Somebody suffers a major loss after an honest mistake, then has the guts and the integrity to post it for everybody to see and possibly learn from it. You tell'im, XBoeingCapt!... The best thing to do when a guy makes a mistake is to kick him in the jewels and tell him him how stupid he is! I'm guessing Boeing fired you for wanking while flying.
They make a flight simulator you can practice on a computer. You can choose from a hundred different planes and it comes with a remote control just like the real thing. That way when you have an expensive toy like that... you know what you're doing and you're an expert before you leave the ground. Better luck next time!
Well, I guess you have never made a serious mistake. I was not there at the time, but I am was told that several others had the transmitter in their hands and did not pick up on the error, either. Definitely not good, but worthless? No.

@dginia - that was just heart breaking to watch. As a model flyer myself, I can't stand to see even a trainer plane hit the ground, let alone a beautiful scale model such as yours. Fair play to you for having the balls to post this video so that others can learn from your mistake. I hope you are not too down about this and that you pick yourself up and build another - coz you sure build fantastic planes! Oh, and just ignore any negative comments coz they ain't worth jack!
Like real aviation...do the checklists 4 first flight. Costed me about 5-6 crashes and so much money to learn a very simple and very crucial thing,.. pre-fly checklist...So sad to see that plane went down...
Happened to me once, but i recovered and saved the plane ... psychometric skills went on overload though and i sat out the rest of the day at the field, legs went jelly too - Spent so much time building such a beauty n this had to happen to U - Am sorry, but i bet Ur over it by now, yeah .... Cheers !!
An airplane will continue to roll to the right when the left aileron is down and the right aileron is up. A pilot's instincts prevent him from pushing the stick in the opposite direction and saving the plane. By the time his thought process overcomes his instincts, the crash has already happened.
Yep! I have made this mistake and even though my brain knew what was wrong, I could not get my hand to move. Only once have I seen someone be able to react to save the plane.
@dginia Put a little electric Piper cub into a tree doing the same thing. Dad told me the ailerons were the right way, and I thought they were wrong but it was his so I flew it that way.
Turns out i was right in the end lol. I knew what was wrong but I just couldnt go against all my insticts and push the stick left when the plane was on its left wingtip. I feel your pain!
@dginia the lesson i am learning from this crash is that as soon as your plane gets up off the ground it is helpfull to gain a handfull of altitude and then make small wobble turns side to side to check the controls, just in case.
@dginia It happened to me while I was flying a trainer. Luckily, I was able to stay off the ailerons and fly by rudder and elevator only. It worked. However, there would be no way I could do this if was a sport plane, warbird or any other type plane that needs ailerons as well as rudder.
What is it with people and Dc-3's yanking them off wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to early? I don't even get my 60 size Mustang up that fast with the OS 120 pumper.
Yes, I am afraid, so. It is a cautionary note to all of us. I have done this myself. No matter how experienced you are, when preflighting (especially a new) aircraft, be sure to have someone else preflight it, too! Sometimes those ailerons are backwards!
Sad

This is what I do to make sure my ailerons are correct and so far has been working for me...
1) With Rx and Tx on, move aileron stick to the RIGHT
2) look at left aileron and it should be in the DOWN position. LEFT = DOWN = 4 letter word.
I know this may seem silly but pneumonics really help you remember stuff.
