Thanks for the review. I'm looking to buy a Benchmade because I am impressed with their quality. I want to stay away from the bulk and weight of some of the larger knives and I think the 585 may just fit the bill. Thanks again for the review.
@neurad1 this is why I try to stay away from assisted opening knives. I just stick with folders. but yeah benchmade should be able to fix your knife if you mail it in.
Hey streetmaster63, I'm essentially looking for an assisted knife that is similar to the sog flash II but has steel liners. Is this knife up to the challenge?
Oh hell yes. Of course it'll be heavier than the SOG because it's much more solid built. The blade steel on the 585(580-large version) is better quality than the AUS8 the SOG Flash uses. Also, the lock-up on the Benchmade is rock solid, no blade-play in any direction. It's well worth the extra money if the extra weight doesn't bother you. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
it has the same length blade as a mini-grip, but its fatter, weighs more, and adds assisted opening which is totally not needed for the Axis lock in my opinion.
if someone's looking for a step up from the grips, I'd probably recommend the 942/943 series.
That's ok, you don't have to like it. The 942/943 series are superb knives, but much more expensive than the 585. They are a large step up from the grips. Not everyone can afford to spend $130 on a folder. I paid $78 for my 585, it's still a great knife for it's mid-range price. The assist isn't necessary, but it's still fun. If you want a decent knife in the same price range as the Mini-Grip, try the 527 Mini Presidio Ultra, can't loose on that one.
No, you have to use the thumb stud. Even if you release the Axis, the blade still stays closed until you push it open with the thumb stud. You can't flick it open. It's just like any other spring assisted knife, but it uses the Axis for the locking mechanism.
CORRECTION: I was wrong. The 585 CAN be flicked open like other Axis Lock knives. It takes a little more force to do it, but it can be done. I might put up a video showing how it works...
Sweet knife. I like the idea of the full size when it comes out. This knife reminds me of a sog flash for some reason. The flash is one of my favorites, but I wish it had steel liners. This one does, but it will be heavier.
The SOG Flash is nice, but I like the quality feel of the 585. I don't even remember it's in my pocket until I need a knife. It's not as heavy as you think. It doesn't sound or feel hollow like the Flash
Severator, sorry I failed to answer you right away. Somehow I missed your post.
Yes, the handle is a little thicker and longer than the Mini-Grip. It's a bit more noticeable in the pocket, meaning you can feel it there more. In the hand, the grip feels a tiny bit more comfortable. But that doesn't mean the 585 is uncomfortable either. There is NO gimping on the 585, don't know how I feel about that.
No. None of the Griptilians have assisted opening. If you go to Benchmade's site, or any site that sells Benchmades, you can find out anything you want to know about all the different models and their features.
The Tenacious is a great knife. Especially considering the price. But, it's too large for me to EDC. It's a matter of preference. Tactical? - it's hard to say, I don't use my knives in that way. The Tenacious is my only Spyderco(so far) and they are great, but Benchmade is my favorite brand right now. IMO, the Mini-Barrage and Mini-Griptilian are the perfect size EDC knife. It's small enough to EDC comfortably, but big enough to be useful. Please keep in mind, I am NOT a knife expert.
If you mean can you flip it closed like a Griptilian, nope. It's spring assisted, so there's tension on it, you have to use both hands or you can put the spine of the blade against your leg or something. I suppose you could close it with one hand, but it's hard to release the Axis lock and close the blade at the same time. It's possible, but awkward.
1:05 to see it opened.

I personally don't like this knife at all.

Do u recommend this knife for the price range? Should I get this knife?
tigerseye094 3 years ago
Yes I recommend it. That's entirely up to you.

Can you open the knife up with the axis lock like how you can with the Mel Par Due (sorry if i dont spell that right) Benchmade.
