Outstanding video. The old Sunbeams seem to be making a come back. With the convenience of today's drip makers, it's easy to forget the superior taste of vacuumed made coffee. Amazing that these old work-horses are still doing their thing after 60 years!
i just got one of these but i can't get it open at all. i am trying to open it like in the video but it seems like it's just stuck. any tips on how to do it?? great video!!!
Excellent idea to sand the rubber gasket. I bought my used model and the rubber is very firm to a point that it's very difficult to connect the two ends without pre-soaking it in boiling water for a long time. I'll try your idea! Also it looked like you put the filter in upside down - but I'll double check mine. That other metal-looking stand that the top part was resting in - did that come with it?
I inherited this coffee maker but my filter mechanism does not seem to lock. It has one longer spring on top. Not the 2 springs shown on the video. And when I press it down, it does not seem to go down like yours in the video. The water boils but does not come to the top like it is supposed to. Just keeps boiling and the button does not move to low. Any suggestions?
If you are having trouble fitting the top part into the bottom, just moisten the rubber seal edges with some water. The top will slip into the bottom very easily. Replacement seals are available for these units on the internet. They are very good and work as well as the original.
Very nice demonstration. I have used this type exclusively for 23 years now. There is a very similar one that is a Cory brand. Also an excellent coffee maker.
Thanks for doing this! I was given just the bottom part of this coffee maker, and thought it was a warming pot. Put drip coffee in it to keep it warm and of course it instantly boiled over! Fun to really know how the thing is supposed to work. If I ever see the top at a yard sale, I'll jump on it!
Hi, I have a few of these, and they make great coffee. The filter you have is the correct one that Sunbeam switched to. I think it was called Jet Flow or similar. Before that filter, the pot used a cloth filter. I have both, and there seems no difference in flavor.
I too think these make excellent coffee. The water is never boiled, the hot expanded water is driven up the tube and the bubbles are air not boiled water. Take a temp, it's never 212, more like an ideal 203. Through the years I've arrived at using a very fine grind and having the heated water in the upper chamber for just 23 seconds, stirring constantly, before switching the selector to low. You can fill with water half over that bubble that is abouve the hash marks, that's 10 cups.
Wow I just found one of these with a great looking seal in an antique store for around 20 bucks. I is happy.
