The worst missed call by far was the Stabler "non-pass". That was CLEARLY a forward pass, and how the officials missed it is just puzzling. The Banazak advancement of the ball forward was also a forward pass, but that one is not quite as clear and I could see how the refs might not have seen that one. The one that is not clear at all is the Casper "touching"; it looks like he is trying to pick up the ball and run with it but it just slips out of his hands.
The refs should have huddled after the play to discuss and make a determination. An obvious underhand pass. No video review at that time. Incompetence on behalf of the refs.
@mschwink That rule wasn't put in place until after the Holy Roller season. In fact, the Holy Roller play was why they implemented that rule. However, Troy Polamalu's punch was blatantly illegal.
I saw that play live...really cool...the Raiders used to kick the Chargers butts every year back then.... You had to go back to Paul Lowe and Keith Lincoln to get back to decent Charger teams!
I just love it(even though it's not in this video) when Bill King announces on air to John Madden, "Yes John, it's a touchdown, now sit your big butt down!"
I'm a life-long Charger fan(I was in 8th grade when this game took place) and I was rolling around like the SD Chicken was on the railing(which also isn't shown). The good 'ol days of football, free agency has ruined the sport & now a nobody team can win a championship by just writing a check :(
@05gtdriver I believe the actual quote is "Madden is on the field. He wants to know 'Is it real?' They say yes, get your big but out of here. He does. There's nothing real in the world anymore!"
Shut up and win a Super Bowl you cry baby ass chickens!! If this was cheating then some one shoot Tom Brady for his god damn tuck rule. Piece of sh*t coward went on to win three after his lies. You guys still ain't shit in this league, when was the last time you even got close to a championship? Can anyone tell me? Stupid chickens.
Smart move by Pete Banaszak tossing the ball toward the endzone instead of trying to pick it up and running with it. Dave Casper happened to be in the right place at the right time and waited until the ball was in the endzone to fall on it. I remember watching this game and I was happy the Raiders had won. Of course now all the rules have changed and Raiders would have been penalized if the same thing happened today.
Pete Banazak illegally shoveled the ball. Dave Casper illegally kicked the ball to advance it. Did they do this to illegally make forward progress? OH HELL YEAH THEY DID !!!!! Just win baby !!!!!!!!!
What's funny to me is the fact that after Dave Casper recovered the ball, the whole Chargers defense appeared into the end zone and just looked around.
@MrLuigithegreat It should have, but from the ref's point of view, he had to rule it a fumble. The ref couldn't see Stabler's arm going foward from where he was positioned.
The rule also states that the ball must cross the line for it to be a touchdown. So Casper got on the ball inside the goal line so that make it a touchdown.
@StFidjnr--you can download the last 15 minutes or so of Bill King's radio broadcast. Just google "Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame" and you should be able to find it. "There's nothing real in the world anymore!!!!"
no can do. Due to that incident (everybody knew it was an illegal forward pass, but it can't be proven) the rules were changed. Now, beyond the two minute warning or an 4th down a forward fumble by the offense can only be recovered by the fumbling player. If any other player recovers the fumble, the ball is placed at the initial spot of the fumble.
That was ridiculously awful. "However, when asked after the game by Raiders radio announcer Bill King if he intentionally fumbled, Stabler said, 'You bet your a** I did.' Banaszak and Casper also admitted that they deliberately batted the ball towards the end zone." The Tuck Rule was karma for this one. Thanks Madden.
They only ever change the Rules when it benefits the Raiders. This play is an example along with the Lester Hayes Stickum rule. Where was the Change to the Tuck Rule?
Raiders said what they were trying to do, why is it even an argument? Madden says in the video point that Stabler, Banicek and Casper were doing. Its like the tuck rule except the Raiders of all people have more class and admit they got away with one. Madden even says at the end they weren't supposed to do it.
I gotta say it was a foward pass and that other player pickin the ball up and throwin it towards the inzone was a smart move and they never got caught i like that about the Raiders and im a pats fan.
Technically, it wasn't cheating as it wasn't against the rules back then but instead a pretty dog move. The only wrong thing about the play was that it should've been called an incomplete pass.
The San Diego Chicken,Dan Fouts,Kenny Stabler what memories. The Raiders were involed with the three biggest screwball plays of the '70s not to mention Daryrl Stingley. Hated them in Super Bowl Xl but later became a fan. And where is the lighting bolt on the Chargers pants I don't remember strips?!

first of all, Ken Stabler tried to pass the ball. So it was an incomplete pass. It is moot that the fumble was recovered!

haha classic. Polumalu's play was totally intentional... and brilliant. if you read the official rule on this matter his action was legal

Yup, just saw Polamalu do a holy roller of his own. How the hell did that play get reviewed and not get overturned??? Are they blind?
erikneffca 4 months ago
@erikneffca Cus you can't review a play and then call a penalty.
AirAaron88 4 months ago
According to Wikipedia, the rule only applies to offensive players fumbling the ball forward, so it would not apply to Polumalo anyway.
