Carving is just riding on the edge -- there are different styles, with different ways to initiate the turns and rely on the body position... Check the "welcome center" at bomberonline com, lots of good info there.
@snowytom I'm riding a 158 Hooger Booger, dunno if you saw my thread about riding hard plates on that board and if it's doable with ski boots, i'm just getting into plates and the stiff now. Any advice on how to ace the heelside? I've read alot that people tend to prefer heelside because you can naturally stack all of your potential leverage onto that edge to get it high up easily, but i find it just the opposite right now, toeside i can almost fully angulate without much trouble, but heelside..
So, i've been trying to use more of my full SCR on an old Hooger Booger 148 i ride, not too too stiff by today's standards, but i figure if i get on plates with it i'll start to adapt. Is alpine carving more about using your whole body to turn? Or is it the opposite where you are not moving your body to initiate a turn but rather initiating it with your legs then using your body to coax out of it?
When you're doing the triple turns - what's the sidecut radius of that board you're using? I feel like if I did that on my 9m slalom board I would eat it :)
@LineatusSutaenil I've done those on anything from 8 to 13m sidecut boards. The trick is to quickly switch edges, even on small SCR boards it feels like riding in a straight line.
@snowytom I've found those triple turns are all about an ankle movement. I've done them before but they require really consistent gradual slopes i find with my board or else i build up way to much speed and have to skid a bit to bleed speed. I find they're all about the ankles, i keep my hands clenched behind me. I'll have to read all the Bomberonline articles again before this season because last season was only my first season carving and i really got the hang of it but i've probably...
@snowytom ...forgotten alot of the technique involved. I just went with what worked for me. I always have a big problem with boot overhang though, which means i can never get really full angulation carves. Also, can i ask what kind of material you would recommend for dampening/riser? I figure it will elevate the binding a bit which might solve a bit of the bootout problem.

@martinenn Glad you liked it -- thanks! I'm curious if you had a chance to read the article on snowycolorado? The video was meant as an illustration to the article...
Dude my F2 board is a 172 and its at 65 front 60 back I believe, whats your setup? I'm think about buying a new slalom board, I'm leanin towards a Kessler setup with maybe Catek bindings, I already got my boots, what do ya think?
There are so many options that it's hard to say what's right for you. Kessler makes great boards, but if you're not racing you can probably do almost just as well with boards from Prior or Donek. Check bomberonline store for some ideas. I haven't ridden Catek bindings, but I'm sure they're good. I like Bomber Trenchdiggers and Ibex Speed bindings.
Hi SnowyTom!! My question is can you carve on a bumpy slope and what's the right way to do that in order to avoid falling.
And another one - It's ok for me to carve on a slope that has no drops and which has the same more or less angle throughout the mountain. But when there are abrupt drops I just fall when carving, what's ur advice on that?
Hello! Yes, you can and should carve both kinds of slopes! I like to keep my knees bent and be halfway up, so that I can compress when I hit bumps or extend legs if I go off a roller. For bumpy slopes keep knees bent and plan two turns ahead. Check my "carving steep ungroomed" video for some footage -- my knees are bent and I'm staying low...
I've never seen alpine gear for sale at a regular ski/board shop. You will have to mail order. I used Bomberonline, and was very satisfied. Their website has a good gear review section.
Does setting ur binding in a bigger angle will help u "carve" more easyly? I mean, in this video, the guy's binding is set like i dunno, almost like `15 degrees front and 15 in the back. I'm just a beginner who started last winter. need some tips
This video is for hardboots -- different boots, different bindings, different board from the normal freestyle and pipe setups. The more you face the nose of the board the easier to carve... but on a soft setup, with which I have limited experience, try +12 front and +3 back?
@soso2bu , these guys set their bindings like that because their boards are alpine snowboards,(raceboards). search " how to mount bindings" by snowprofesseur. that video helps determine ur riding style goals and helps you with setting ur bindings. let me know if this help you bro. ride on
I think carving has to do with just using your edges to turn rather than pushing your back foot to skid through the turn. After you ride, look at your tracks. If they are pretty skinny and jump from edge to edge, you're carving. But if the snow is kinda messy when you turned, you're skidding.
Carving: making all your turns just on the edge -- think pencil-thin tracks all the way down the mountain. Skidding: sliding the entire board around to make the turns -- lots of pushed-around snow tracks. And then there is "slarving" -- where you start a turn by skidding, but then set the edge and finish up with a nice pencil-thin line :)
Now I use hips, knees, and ankles -- but before I figured out how to do it, twisting my upper body was an easy way to make it all happen. In other words, once you twist your upper body you end up driving your hips some, your knees a bit less, and your ankles a little bit too. If you look at the Pureboarding videos, the early rotation into the turn is very distinctive. I think it makes the turn look very smooth and "surfy", and allows people to not have to worry about all the lower joints.
good stuff. I honestly just wanted to hear you say it. I know its waist down. So many people (even 'snowboard instructional" videos on here) teach to lead with your shoulders by turning/twisting them. I used to teach at Breck.
The more that the boot is across the board, the easier it is to use the ankles -- and with softboots it'd be much easier because the boots are flexible. Your main issue is going to be overhang -- i.e. your toes or heels will touch the snow when you start carving. You might be able to reduce with by riding with slightly steeper angles -- but you can definitely ankle carve on softies. Good luck!
Hi tom, firstly your video looked like me riding because we have such similar styles. I've been riding a Burton Alp 64 with Burton Front clip binginds for 11 years. Time for a new boaed right? So Im looking at the GTS Speedster from F2. Prior is made about an hour from where I live, but I didnt get a good vibe from their products. Also my old reliable Burton bindings are now IBEX TC. Im thinking of just changing the rubber peices and reconditioning them that way for my new board. Although it
I actually have had great luck with Prior boards, and owned 3-4 of them. Not sure what you mean about "not a good vibe", but Chris (the owner) is a very good guy and the boards are very well made -- so maybe worth taking another look. Besides you can't beat having the factory that close to ride some demos and for any kind of work if the board needs it :) I just picked up some Ibex TC bindings as well and am looking forward to riding them this season. Cheers!
Yes, there are some parts on the Metal WCR. I liked it, very nice board to ride. The SCR was a bit too big for my local hill, so I no longer ride it -- but if you have a wider hill at your disposal, definitely try that board.
great stuff- snowboarded for the 3rd time yesterday and was finally linking turns consistently. videos like this keep me psyched to get back out and keep learning
hey, can i ask, is it possible to learn this type of riding at all with a normal board that you get when you rent, like kind of wide and not flat in the tail?
Yes, you can carve on soft-boots, but it's a lot harder -- those boards are softer, your toes/heels usually overhang the edges. So if you have a chance to try hardboots, go for it. If not, try riding with slightly higher angles, and check youtube for videos on softboot carving.
I've only been snowboarding once, but the switch stance was the only carve I could do. It's kinda lame doing it all the way down a slope, but at least it slowed me down.
damn your good i just went snowboarding for my first time ever i was just starting to learn how to carve from my friend when they closed i cant wait till tommorrow
Very nice video... I wish I could do such carves... I'm often disturbed by the irregularities of the track... And by the others.. As by motorcycle, we must pay attention at each second... But it's only a very nice pleasure to ride... Unfortunately, at 46 years old I begin to suffer from backbone desease... lollll ;-)
Base edge? You mean binding angles? 3/1 would make it look your riding with your legs perpendicular to the board. It seems like your riding with a very high angle. Also do you use forward lean? thanks.
I meant base and side angles of the actual board, not the angle of bindings on the board. The binding angles are higher, in the range of 55-60 front and 40-55 back, depending on board width.
I don't use forward lean, but have a pretty flexible boot setup using Bomber's BTS system.
Crazy man... Makes me want to set my bindings at similar (insane) angles and fall on my *ss to get a better appreciation. Smooooth man, I could watch that whole vid again for inspiration.
Thanks -- yes, riding switch was very awkward to begin with, you can see that I just tried to ride a straight line on nearly flat terrain. Then adding little turns here and there, just build up your confidence. After 10,000 turns you'll feel much better :)
please see one of my replies further down -- it all depends on the board, but usually 60FF/50RF or 50FF/40RF -- I prefer wider (20.5cm or so) boards that allow these lower angles.
Ha ha ha, that'd be funny :) Let me see if I can affix the camera behind my back foot, though most of the point-of-view footage is hard to watch. Still have a month left this season!
please please tell me how to do those crosss unders i always seem to turn rapidly ive eaten lots of snow and paid with pain but taught myself to link turn in a week more info please
I'd recommend you stay centered, with equal weight over both feet, and really use your ankles to tilt the board. If you stay too far back it'll feel like the front foot is easier to engage... but at a loss to the back. So stay neutral and work on flexing the ankles to drive the board.
you seem to have had good training. i just took at look at ur article and its full of good stuff:D youve really thought/trained alot havent u hehe how long have u been riding? and where have u trained? btw im like the only carver i know that rides on a freestyleboard :( i dun have enuf money heh im stil in high skool:D:D
I'm going to Davos this weekend for 3 days. Never boarded before (ski'ed some years ago), but used to skate for years back in the day and surf too, so the idea of the long carve is appealing and something i'm hoping - wont be too hard to pick up. Any hints/tips you can give the beginner boarder to think about please?
they pop up to the other side and once u get the timing it will become perfect C's and wont dmg ur turn. This technique is great for getting maximal edge angles especialy on flat stuff. I can almost perfectly euro carve a few times on the flats using this technique as ur carve shoots fast and gets aggresive on the next turn
Thanks, beanazz. In fact the things you mentioned are what I've been working on since I assembled this movie -- I'll try to make "part II" towards the end of this season.
yo tom... can u give an exact "how to" or a "guide" on how to carve i can carve perfectly with the toes but ankles just dont work im goofy by the way. also.. every single time i try to stop i fall on my ass.. is that because i pick up the board to high or not high when im stopping?
u can get alot more performance out of wat u call the ec turns, casi calls it down unweighting(im a casi 3) switch ur edge earlier when ur board has alil more cambre(bend) so taht it basically shoots ur board to the next edge real fast. dont worry about taht dmg ur angulation as ur turns are slimmer because when ur legs "cross under"
I really like your smooth and relax style... I ride the same :)
I would like a tip or two on how to set my fixation angle... now my settings are very polyvalent but I lack of aggressivity and surely cannot put my hands down...
I use to live in Winter park Colorado and was just starting to get into slpine boarding man I wish I never left. It's awsome how fast you can go on those things and how well they carve
woow :o i started snowboarding about 4 weeks ago because ther's nothing to skate on in the winter but just watchin you ride and the music you chose just fit so well awesoem vid thats one for me faves list :D ty matey
I'm not pretending to be the best rider out there -- this is just a collection of clips that show what I have been working on. I'd love to get into the pipe and learn more stuff -- it's all work in progress.

verry funny same t6ecvhniques in both sports witgh the board only otherway around kiting needs lean on back foot.
What I figured oputn is put both softboots with your toes foward so no duck or 90degree backfoot it only holds u back getting the right techniiuqe
with u backfoot poitet foward u can control te board much easyer downhil from red and blaCK SLOPES Xd

nice vid, i need to learn the switch stance technique... so off balance and awk but practice makes perfect.
gtiinyoeye 3 years ago
Thanks -- yes, riding switch was very awkward to begin with, you can see that I just tried to ride a straight line on nearly flat terrain. Then adding little turns here and there, just build up your confidence. After 10,000 turns you'll feel much better :)

Binding angles?
darko714 3 years ago
please see one of my replies further down -- it all depends on the board, but usually 60FF/50RF or 50FF/40RF -- I prefer wider (20.5cm or so) boards that allow these lower angles.

Hey and can we get an ankle cam at some point ?
blisterj 3 years ago
Ha ha ha, that'd be funny :) Let me see if I can affix the camera behind my back foot, though most of the point-of-view footage is hard to watch. Still have a month left this season!
snowytom 3 years ago
no I meant say lead ankle over looking nose of board lol you could rig up a wide angle shot with some small cams. !! :))
blisterj 3 years ago
please please tell me how to do those crosss unders i always seem to turn rapidly ive eaten lots of snow and paid with pain but taught myself to link turn in a week more info please
blisterj 3 years ago
try leaning back a little bit putting more weight on the back foot
yanks325 3 years ago
thanks mate ill give it a go !!
blisterj 3 years ago
I'd recommend you stay centered, with equal weight over both feet, and really use your ankles to tilt the board. If you stay too far back it'll feel like the front foot is easier to engage... but at a loss to the back. So stay neutral and work on flexing the ankles to drive the board.

hey thanks for your info mate ill give it a go please keep these videos comin we LOVE EM !!!!!!

just out of curiosity, what angles do you have your bindings at?
from what I can see, it looks like you have both at least 15 degress forward...

Nice vid.
I'm going to Davos this weekend for 3 days. Never boarded before (ski'ed some years ago), but used to skate for years back in the day and surf too, so the idea of the long carve is appealing and something i'm hoping - wont be too hard to pick up. Any hints/tips you can give the beginner boarder to think about please?
pellienarc 4 years ago
you carve better when your bindings are closer right? i can see yours are quite close to each other.
thefunk9 4 years ago
how long did it take you to learn to carve this good. i just started snowboarding is all
yoxall07 4 years ago
yoxall07, most of the clips in this movie were from my first three years of riding -- 50-60 days a year.
snowytom 4 years ago
they pop up to the other side and once u get the timing it will become perfect C's and wont dmg ur turn. This technique is great for getting maximal edge angles especialy on flat stuff. I can almost perfectly euro carve a few times on the flats using this technique as ur carve shoots fast and gets aggresive on the next turn
beanazz 4 years ago
Thanks, beanazz. In fact the things you mentioned are what I've been working on since I assembled this movie -- I'll try to make "part II" towards the end of this season.
snowytom 4 years ago
yo tom... can u give an exact "how to" or a "guide" on how to carve i can carve perfectly with the toes but ankles just dont work im goofy by the way. also.. every single time i try to stop i fall on my ass.. is that because i pick up the board to high or not high when im stopping?
deniswashere 4 years ago
u can get alot more performance out of wat u call the ec turns, casi calls it down unweighting(im a casi 3) switch ur edge earlier when ur board has alil more cambre(bend) so taht it basically shoots ur board to the next edge real fast. dont worry about taht dmg ur angulation as ur turns are slimmer because when ur legs "cross under"

Really enjoy the video.. nice carving... nice song too! What's the title of the song? You say various songs, but it sounds like one song....
LiquidTurbo 4 years ago
music is awesome and i love your boarding, the lines in the snow are the best bit the perfect angles and curve brilliant 5/5 :D
dobby240 4 years ago
I really like your smooth and relax style... I ride the same :)
I would like a tip or two on how to set my fixation angle... now my settings are very polyvalent but I lack of aggressivity and surely cannot put my hands down...
Viens rider au Québec mec A+
matcl123 4 years ago
Thanks! Experiment with your angles -- two main schools of thought are:
1. adjust your angles so that the ends of your boots (back and front) are at the edge of the board
2. choose angles that feel good that make the boot stay within the edges.
I personally ride 55 front, 50 back, or 45 front 30 back, depending on the width of the board.

Sheesh :) Ride and let ride!
I'm not pretending to be the best rider out there -- this is just a collection of clips that show what I have been working on. I'd love to get into the pipe and learn more stuff -- it's all work in progress.
Enjoy your snow days...
