Wow. This is what people are taking as artistry? There's nothing he did that any of you couldn't do within a week! I've played professionally for thirty years and I can tell you that solo was a lot of hustling. No structure. No melody. No ideas relating to one another. Just a bunch of showy flailing. Anybody can do that in any meter. I'd like to see Mr. Kilson perform something more technical and thoughtful. Why do some drummers think that fast, unstructured and sweaty equals "jazz" or good. C+
what the hell! guys maybe you're not listening to what the bass does under his solo, try to listen in he way he uses time with the melody, listen to the cd version also to see how he works (overtime by dave holland) Billy is amazing, if you don't understand what he does it means you have a lot of work to do!!! completely agree with Gman. peace.
@Gman4MF although i have played with kilson and you haven't most probably :P I just don't have the time to do it full time to be up 'there' all the time.
Well,,,, For Someone who has played for Thirty Years, you should have alot of experience. I have a question though? Why havent you made a name for yourself, the way billy Kilson has?.. People always talk about how good they are but when someone far better than them shows/cuts/destroys anything and everything they have tried to accomplish in their Entire lifetime or Career (in your case 30 years), they get cocky and start "talking shit." He is wayyyy better than YOU bro!!!! =)
But this is what that kind of music is about! Not to think too much! I mean ... listen to the solo, you can't denie, it really grooves! If you only think, that you must show everything you can do technically and this idea and the other idea ... then it is nothing but sports, and no music!
When I saw him with Larry Carlton at the Blue Note he kept knocking over his high hat. It is a great show watching him work the cymbals, not to mention everything else. Larry called him a drummer with "that East Coast style of playing". I think he was irritated because Billy got as much attention as he did. I thought it wonderful to experience them both. What a treat.
billy would make Gene Krupa take up the oboe if they were in the same era. Best I have ever seen or heard, and I am 75 years, listening to jazz since I was 9.
i agree, i wish billy still laid it down with dave. but then again i did see them live with nate and that guy is nuts. adhd meets a drum set.... dave's band is for sure in the top two of my favorite big bands along with jaco pastorius big band. you all should check out billy's group BK Groove if you haven't already.
lol.... im saying he's dropping a bit of hiphop loops when he is at it, and he's known for that shit... if u can't hear that you just got noob ears. go flame elsewhere k kid? thx
hahahaha, ok mr. super ears why dont you tell us all then which specific passage in the solo would be described as "hip hip flavor" dont forget to mention the minutes while your at it so we know just when the flavor hits us. all of us rythmically retarded listeners would love to know, and hear it just as you do.
I like the drumsolo.

I'm convinced there are not many (or maybe no) drummers that can do what he is doing.
There's several types of players outthere.
Technical can also mean boring, because it has no guts, no feel.
What Billy does is technically strong and has lots of feel. See Dave Holland smiling at him all the time.
Actions speak louder than words !
And haha, u wish you could play like that !
It sure ain't you sitting upthere,
because if you were able to,
you wouldn't even bother commenting...

You cannot argue with the groove from 3:41 - barri entrance

Sounds like you haven't invested any real time in examining the cd this performance is from.
Your third comment extreme hyperbole.
Your fourth is just sort of irrelevant.
Your fifth and sixth comments are just factually incorrect.
One wonders if you're just a plumber who plays a drummer on the internet.

Yeah,Billy is awesome.
Saw Dave Holland Quintet last NSJ2007 again, and i can understand why Nate Smith IS the drummer for Dave...
It was another "kicksass" performance of the highest quality jazz that is there 2day. For young AND old...
