liked this song and didnt know who did it, until i got an old american top 40 from 7/31/82 and it was number 40. had no idea it was herb albert. great song..
Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for this one since it came out (I was 5 years old by then). I'm glad to see that a long search is finally over... and I must thank the band "Double" for having Mr. Alpert in their song "Devils Ball"... a real genius!
@wannawatchu66 Yes, he's a Jew; Rafael Mendez, the best trumpet player of the world for many years, never got all the propaganda that only the Jews give to each other. I always like Herb Alpert Very much, but I trully resent the fact that others don't get the same benefits the Jews Get from the Jewish media. Herb Alpert got a lot of publicity from the Mexican Media, here and there in Mexico, but Mendez did not get any of the attention he deserved. Yet he's still regarded as one of the best ever
@wannawatchu66 Yes he's Jewish; and you are giving him unnecesary/doubtful credit for it. There is nothing special about being a jew; the jews have been persecuted through history, not for nothing; please stop your reverse psychology, it won't work on me. There must be something wrong with a group of people when the whole world hate them...
@1961beethoven What a hate monger you are.. I feel sorry for you. There was nothing WRONG with us! God used our people to bring Messiah to the world that you might be saved. But your hate and ignorance has consumed your heart. Goodbye
@wannawatchu66 I believe he's also homosexual; do you also want to give him credit for that? When you tell only part of the story, you are actually propagandizing; which is common practice for the Jews; not for nothing Hitler, the Inquisition and a thousand more have tried to exterminate those guys. Let's just say that he is/was a good trumpet player that got inspired in Tijuana Mexico in 1962.
@1961beethoven Had that chip on your shoulder long? When I said Alpert was Jewish, I was only responding to someone who said he's not Hispanic, so don't put words in my mouth and read things into my previous posts. Who cares that you believe he's gay? As for "the crap opinions by...the time-wasters on YouTube," the SIX COMMENTS IN A ROW below are YOURS. So how about taking your own advice, quit acting like a troll, and quit trying to start pissing contests?
Just wonderful. Memories of my childhood riding the subway in Mexico City and go to the Latino American tower near Downtown Mexico City in the early 70s. Thank you so much for posting. Realmente una joya de melodía. Muchísimas gracias por haberla puesto mi buen amigo. Sans mots!!! merci!!!
Loved this from the first time I heard it. I agree w/ poster who said the song is beautiful for its slight melancholy as well as the up feel. Reminds me of the feeling of stepping off a plane in the tropics when you've travelled from 10 degrees- but you know you eventually have to return... : [
@sallygoroundtheroses Its actually about Route US 101 in California that runs from L.A thru Oregon up to the Olympic peninsula in Wash. state. You must have a state route with the same number
@MrJacMac1986 Being Herb a native of Los Angeles; the instrumental piece probably refers to FREEWAY 101; but "Route 101" sounds better than "Freeway101"...
Wish there was a way to say how much I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! I've actually driven Rt 101 and this song captures something of how I felt driving it in my Austin Healy...top down, cool fog in the low places, bright sun in the high spots!!!! Brings back such wonderful memories!!!!1
@geniekri Did you really have an Austin Healy or was it a Jensen Healy? In either case, driving around with your top down in either one of those cars, and listening to this song is just a great feeling.
@kptrojans sorry this is late but, yes, it was an Austin Healy...the last imported to the US. And man, I miss those days! Hair in the wind....some cute guy in the passenger seat....the California sun....ho, how I wish I could go back to just those moments!!!! You have no idea how much those memories mean to me!!!!
@geniekri "WOW", you nailed it, especially the part about the Austin Healy! And mine would be the cute girl in the passenger seat. Either way, picture perfect driving the California coastline with the top down, and Herb and George playing the cruising music. Not to must better than that.
@kptrojans Amen..... You know, I sometimes really long for those days. I know I would have made better choices and headed in another direction. But riding in my Healy, hair blowing, radio blaring, and the California sun ... man, I just ache for those times some days. Hate getting older and those days gone forever!
Next to George Benson "Breezin", there is nothing like driving the PCH in the middle July or Aug, with your on top down playing both Breezin or Route 101. Without a doubt (at least in my opinion), these two song optimize the drive along the California coast line... pure beauty and greatness.
@kptrojans Agree completely! About 2 weeks ago I bought two Herb albums, as well as George Benson's "Breezin'" and "Weekend in L.A." albums. They made my drive from Massachusetts to Michigan last week go very, very fast :)
Congratulations for the video love Herb and Tijuana Brass hear his songs from childhood exelentes musicians, I have had the pleasure to know them personally but anyway thanks for this magnificent memory.
Great song havent heard it in years.Couldnt remember the name of the song.Went to see a mariachi band at a mexican restaurant last night and made me think of this song from the fall of 1982.Takes me back to the 8th grade
Fabulous musician...Thanks for posting the video ! I agree with essexlph's comment - that's what this song makes me think of as well. Also ' Rise' and 'Rotation'.
I was absolutely impressed with the song. Herb Alpert's "Route 101" song from 1982 contained the right balance of jazz and the right balance of spontaneity. I loved that song. An Amazing 16!!

This song is awesome. I do have one question, is the Trumbonist at :55-:59 Kramer from Seinfeld? Thanks for posting this, the radio doesn't play it anymore.
@clineshaunt The trombonist is Bob Edmondson, one of the great session men. He played on a lot of film and television scoring sessions. He met Herb Alpert while in high school, and when the demand came for a TJB tour, Edmonson was one of the first guys Alpert asked to join the band. He also played on a number of A&M records, later producing some himself. Edmonson worked with everyone from Diz to Harry James to Shelley Manne before he retired about 20 years ago.
@jimraw1 Thanks's for the info. I've always like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I've been down Route 101 before and this song matches that road perfectly. I watched a couple youtube videos with Shelley Manne. That man was a beast.
I grew up listening to this music. My dad would play his music all the time. What great memories. Wish times have not changed so much. Thank you for posting this - certainly many of us remember better times!
This is another song I've tried to find, listen for on the radio, and have never been able to learn what it is or who did it. Thank you so much for putting this up for us!
rickw1100, what the hell are you talking about saying Herb's gay? That would come as quite a shock to Lani Hall (his wife). And what the hell does it have to do with anything, anyway?
Not only is this man a brilliant musician but also a genius businessman. Starting A & M Records with Jerry Moss. I've been a fan of Herb Alpert since I was 6yrs. old. No man ever looked better in a black tux than Herb! He is soo HOT!!!!!!!

If only this beautiful artist could embrace his Gayness like Ricky Martin-this would be a much better world- and the minor chords wouldn't seem so sad in this song. Theres nothing wrong with being Gay.

Ohhh, can I just tell you good people just how special and good this music makes me feel??!! To say this song brings back memories is just a total understatement!!
first time heard this song. could not believe this mens talent. this men is like a platinum surfer. only with a musical instrument. wow. way to go herb.
for years my mom to me this song was chuck mangione and about 6-7 months ago i found out it was alpert...always was a fan of his but didnt know it was him ..now that i know its him ia love the song even more
This kind of music is Timeless. I feel so good when I listen to this song. Its so optimistic that you forget all the troubles away. The video is really good, I didnt know it.
How truly heartwarming it is to see comments from so many of Herb's and the Tijuana Brass's fans. I consider myself one of his/their biggest. Herb was a BIG inspiration to me as a kid when I took up the trumpet in the mid 70s. My parents had his Greatest Hits 8-track. This was years before "Route 101" came out. As jimraw1 implied, by '79 he was far from done. Let's not forget "Bullish" (Summer '84). Then the hits he had with Lisa Keith and Janet Jackson in the mid and late 80s.
Most definitely the best driving song, especially along a coast road with the top down. Day or night makes no difference, this song is #1. Thanks for posting it.
I don't think a lot of people remember all of Herb Alpert and TJB's television specials that were on in the 1960s and early 70s. Each special would feature a "video" of Herb and the Brass having fun to one of their many hits (and boy did they have a ton of hits in those days). When Rise came out most people had given up on Albert as ever having another hit, but that album popped like crazy.
Como sou contrabaixista e levando-se em consideração os recursos tecnológicos da época, a condução, o groove do contrabaixo é fantástica. Claro que estou me referindo á música, ao áudio e não ao vídeo em si.
100% Agreement! Tijuana Brass records were the first records my parents got for me. A&M Records 45's of this kind of music. Herb Alpert will always rule in my book!
This is my song......I love this SONG always have and when my life ends this is the song that will played at my funeral.....Route 101

If only this beautiful artist could embrace his Gayness like Ricky Martin-this would be a much better world- and the minor chords wouldn't seem so sad in this song. Theres nothing wrong with being Gay.

The part where all the people are trying to fit inside the car, reminds me of when me and my family would take long road trips.

@borrow32 Oh yeah? I bet that part inspired a few scenes in the TV movie adaptation of, "Good Old Boy: A Delta Boyhood."

I read that this song is made as the 20th anniversary of his first video from 1962, it features the path of his music carrier during this period.
UrbanTenant 2 years ago
