They just don't make 'em like this anymore. The combinaton of Leone's incredible directing, Morricone's beautiful soundtrack, the breathtaking landscape of the Old West, and the quite brilliant acting of all involved make this movie one of the greatest of all time. Amazing.
@rudeman15 If I remember correctly from the dvd extras, honey was rubbed into Jack Elam's beard to keep the fly on camera. A dead fly on a string was used for pistol captured fly segment.
@paulanna2 that's the sound of the windmill at the set. Apparently someone suggested stopping it because of the noise but Sergio Leone said "don't you touch it". No instrument required
Sergio Leone on little details were extraordinary, its like watching a Rembrandt Painting. In fact, Sergio Leone always wanted his shadows to mimic those of Rembrandt.
Its fantastic how he seems to make the train a living breathing monster by the deep sounds....best when my head phones are on. great opening to a film.
I read somewhere that this nearly 3hr movie had only about 20 pages of dialog in the script. IMO that's beauty of the movie in that it was crafted visually and through the actors body language rather than mindless vocal dribble.
I love that you can really hear the true sounds of a real steam locomotive (up close & crystal clear). I've never heard this in any other western movie. Listen for it and try to block out all the other sounds and just focus on the sounds of the locomotive's steam. It sounds like the locomotive is alive (and breathing). Listen from 9:30 - 10:12. Thanks for posting this great clip. :-)
When the movie came out people of the 20th century walked into the movie theaters: Living in modern times, crowded cities, hectic daily routines. They sat down. The opening credits started: Deceleration. Wide landscape. The perfect immersion into a world in which the clocks ticked slower.
Thanks for the upload! Can't wait to get my hands on the blu-ray. Btw, did you deliberately chose to upload the scene with the last bit missing? Or was it just a coincidence? In case you or others don't know, in the original cut Harmonica actually gets up after he had been shot down. Because that bit was missing in a lot of cuts, especially in the first American cut, a lot of people interpreted weird diabolical metaphors into the movie, e.g. that Harmonica is an immortal ghost, coming for Frank.
@nixsogutstudios That is good information that I didnt know. Thanks for sharing. I did not know about the cut scene and I saw it when first released in the USA. Maybe someday TCM or someone will show the uncut version.
What's great about all of these movies was that they were actually "filmed' and not done digitally with green screens like they are today. The films offers better resolution and the color can't be matched with digital. Digital movies suck anyway, because everything mostly is computer generated. Why waste your money going to the theaters. Just wait til they come to TV.
Al Mulock, the actor who played "Knuckles" in the opening sequence committed suicide by jumping out of the hotel top floor before this sequence was finished. Thats why the last few shots of that character are from a distance so you don't see his face, Sergio Leone used an extra in the same costume to maintain the continuity of the scene, it's still my favourite Spaghetti Western ever by a long long way though:-))))))))))

If you end it right there, this is a classic short film all its own, never mind the rest of the production with Fonda and Cardinale.

does anyone know what kind of instrument make this squeaky, constant sound in the background? I would really appreciate your help
paulanna2 3 weeks ago
@paulanna2 No instrument. That was the actual sound of the windmill. Reportedly a set hand was going to oil it and sergio was gonna strangle him.

Precise dialogue without a single word of surplus, simply perfect...
A story about people and living, nothing less and nothing more.
