That's just a little bit ignorant. Its likely that many of the japanese people in whale farming have families to feed and little hope of other income. Instead of pointing fingers, we should be figuring out a way to stop whale farming while making sure that those who turn to it have a different source of revenue

@TurtleyPompato cows and pigs aren't endangered are they? Last I checked its pretty fuckin hard to mass produce whales, as compared to cows and pigs. Don't bring up stupid arguments. Im no tree hugger but its pretty obvious killing endangered species, who are difficult to breed isn't exactly smart.

From the ethical point of view it's irrelevant whether a species is endangered or not. If it wasn't, killing people would be acceptable, since we're nowhere close to extinction.

And quite frankly, it would not matter if we killed whales, if we had control over their population. Unless you're a vegan, most rational minded people would see that killing an endangered species is the greater issue here. Else why don't you see people trying to protect chickens, or cows? (unless they are treated extremely harshly i.e. skinned alive).

@Haseeebo My original point was that the argument about other animals we kill was not stupid, the logic is just different from yours. Speaking of which, there is one purely logical problem in your argumentation. If killing is OK unless the species is endangered, that means there is no fundamental value to the life of single individual, right? If the individual is not important, why would the whole population be? After all, it consists of unimportant individuals we don't care about.

@Illak666 Individual lives are unimportant if they can be controlled to maintain the natural balance of ecosystems. If whales were completely wiped off the face of the earth, that would have serious implications to other species. In any case, I know what you are trying to say, but it only works in theory. In reality, its unpractical to say the Japanese or any other people killing an endangered species is the same as people killing pigs and cows. If chickens were going extinct, I might dodge KFC.

@Haseeebo The animals in the livestock sector don't reproduce naturally. They are artificially bred by humans with the sole intention of exploiting and slaughtering them. You shouldn't impose life on animals with the specific intention of forcing them to live at best mediocre lives; and at worst horrific ones; and then simply slaughter them.

We as the Human race are the dominant species, as our biggest concerns at this point in time isn't about the individual lives of animals that we can easily reproduce, but rather of those animals who struggle to survive (partially because of us, partially biological i.e. low birth rate), such as Whales. Chickens and cows, we reproduce simply for the purpose of food. It is cruel, but necessary.

@Haseeebo On a mass-scale, sustaining the livestock sector as it exists currently is extremely damaging to the environment; and consumes a huge quantity of surplus resources (e.g. clean water, grain, fish etc); as well as producing astronomical waste in the form of carbon emissions and excretion amongst several other things. It is evolutionarily beneficial to the survival of humanity not to rely heavily on livestock as a source of food.

In fact, chickens are treated extremely harshly, which explains the outrageously low price of poultry.
