This could be genuinely scary if they'd kept it in silouhette (maybe written a blackout into the script), then had shafts of light to pick out certain details like a twitching claw or a flickering eyelid. Then filmed the attack through the window with only a strobing light or pulsing red emergency light. And if they'd used more cuts they could've disguised the awkward movement. With some good post-production and editing software, you could cut this into quite a scary scene.
If they'd shut it's bloody mouth and lit it moodily, this wouldn't look half as bad. Basically the technique is IRRELEVANT. Whether you're using puppets or computers, it takes a good director to know how to use it and bring it alive. Any technique is only as good as the guy directing it. Oh and flugel76, you are a patronising fool.
Apparently, according one of the dr Who books I have, there was a much better T Rex dinosaur model that was going to be used, but it was destroyed in a fire just a day before this story went into production. The model used on screen was, apparently made in an hour as a last minute replacement. this would explain why the Stegosaurus and Triceratops look much(?) better.
Even at the time, it was appreciated that the Dinosaur effects were hardly cutting edge - it was a good thing that the Dinosaurs were actually so incidental to the main plot.
I started watching "Doctor Who" regularly from about this time, so the late Jon Pertwee and early Tom Baker stories hold a special fondness for me.
A GREAT story, even with the dino SFX problem. Hope the DVD will be out soon.
If the dino SFX were updated with modern CGI, "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" would be recognized as one of DW's all-time top stories "Invasion..." has excellent scripting, production and acting. It is well-paced, suspenceful and has surprising plot turns.
A superb story from Season 11, one of Jon Pertwee's best.
The use of CGI dinos in Jurassic Park was great, because they looked genuine, but I'm not entirely pleased with "overuse" of CGI in the new series, because you instantly look at and tell its not a REAL THING. Atleast with the rubbers, yeah its not a REAL dino, but it still gives you a sense of realism because it IS A REAL FAKE DINO. Its not a CGI ghost, like the millions of Cybermen and Daleks that RTD seems prone to fill the skies with.
Agreed. Generation Y and later can simply not understand, comprehend or appreciate pre-CGI special effects. I'm as happy watching this as I am the new series, if not more so. It reminds me of a better time.
@flugel76 Sorry but I don't think that you can say that no one in my generation can appreciate the times of pre-CGI special effects. I appreciate them, deeply respect them in fact. Back then it wasn't "all-explosions-and-no-plot" like it is today. The stories had depth. And now Hollywood thinks their so cocky by doing remakes of classics thinking that they'll be just as good if not better...... they're dumb asses..... Sorry just had to say that.
If you want forced perspective, try Robot. Sladen and Baker both laughed at the toy tank being used in the fight between the robot and UNIT. But its all about the suspension of disbelief, something that is still needed in television today, just the glossy CGI makes it easy. (But not necessarily better.)

This is what all new series episodes will look like once the CGI goes out of date.

And of course, they gave it 3 fingers, not to mention the tripod stance. A true classic indeed.

They actually got someone over from Pixar to render the dinosaur. The computer they used was the size of a block of flats.
charliecfrancis 3 years ago
I was kidding by the way. It was the size of TWO blocks of flats.
charliecfrancis 3 years ago
I doubt they used Pixar. Pixar is fromv 1994/5

There was no CGI in 1974. I was being ironic. But it's not coming across very clearly. My fault. Sorry.
