There's an invisible counter in the game that counts up how many "affection" points you have with the girls... and barret. Certain dialogue choices influence the outcome. Being mean to a girl will obviously decrease the affection points, while being nice will increase it. There are also things like, who you talk to first, that affect the points.
I'd also like to amend my previous statement. I remember, quite clearly now, that the very first time I played the game, I got the Tifa date. After that, in all my subsequent playthroughs, I got Aeris's date. I guess it made sense to me to actually do the date with her, seeing as how that was her payment for Cloud's "Bodyguard" services.
Yuffie's date is kinda cute, embarrassing, and highly remniscent of my highschool dates.
But, at any rate, I actually like Tifa a lot more than Aeris.

In fact, he tried to join SOLDIER to get her approval.

The Promised Land...I can meet her there...". During their date(default), she specifically said that Cloud and Zack were different and that the real Cloud is who she's searching for, not Zack. After the game ends (in Case of Tifa) Cloud tells Tifa he will succeed because of her and will be with her from then on. AC is Cloud returning HOME after dealing with geostigma related guilt issues.

Also to those wondering they most likely ARE going to remake this game along with Final Fantasy VI, but they are going to have to re-assemble most if not all of the original designers in order to accomplish this, and they're working on other projects like Versus XIII and Agito XIII, so it's probably gonna be a few more years before they get around to the remakes...
Ugh Tifa seriously needs to confess sometime this century... of course Cloud is just as much at fault for being so damn oblivious to everything and everyone besides Sephiroth... I love Cloud and Tifa. I think they're so perfect for each other. Which is why it's so painful to watch their date because it's hard to watch Tifa stumble for words and in the end, she still didn't even say it. Poor Tifa ;(

The Golden Saucer Date with Yuffie that I recoded of my PS3 is a lot funnier than this date, but we all know the one Cloud really wants to (gulp) date is Barret and guess what that did happen too oh the horror the horror of it all someone hide the children shield their eyes . The original depiction of Cloud and Tifa's "moment" under the Highwind before their final battle against Sephiroth were originally far more suggestive: following a fade-out scene, Cloud was to walk out of the airship's Chocobo stable followed shortly by Tifa who would check around as she left, implying that the two had spent the night together. This idea was rejected for being too "extreme", and was replaced by the less risque "conversation scene".

@PrInCeSsMaYuRa Correction. Cloud chose Tifa in FFVII. That was the entire point of the big revel in the lifestream. They acted upon their feelings under the Highwind. After the game ends (in Case of Tifa) Cloud tells Tifa he will succeed because of her and will be with her from then on. AC is Cloud returning HOME after dealing with geostigma related guilt issues.

@PrInCeSsMaYuRa I always kind of pause when I see that Cloud will "move on" with Tifa. In Cloud's mind it was always Tifa. It was Tifa when he was growing up. It was Tifa by the end of the game. It was Tifa for the two years between FFVII ans AC. It is Tifa after AC.
When Cloud "moves on" from his guilt about halfway through AC he RETURNS to his established family unit.

But it looks a little complicated in FFVII & Adv. children cause it looks like they aren't even together for that matter in A. children. Like cloud has to many issues to be w/ anyone but himself. Its just what i'm really trying to say is it LOOKED like Cloud is too trapped within his own guilt for not being able to save Aerith & trying to keep Zack's "legacy" alive that he can't be involved w/ anyone at the moment not even himself. So from what I was seeing it LOOKED more like Tifa & Clouds relationship came to an "UNDERSTANDING" more than them being a couple. I can't recall either of them confessing that to each other.

Also to those wondering they most likely ARE going to remake this game along with Final Fantasy VI, but they are going to have to re-assemble most if not all of the original designers in order to accomplish this, and they're working on other projects like Versus XIII and Agito XIII, so it's probably gonna be a few more years before they get around to the remakes...
