  • I always thought that Marylin was sexy...

  • I guess Marilyn could kind of relate to these lyrics.

  • American Spring's version waaaaaaaaay better than The Carpenters this is more autobiographical which makes it good. This song never really worked for The Carpenters but it's still good

  • someone needs to put together a fantasy duet with American Spring and Karen Carpenter

  • this is great

  • @mv12 how dare u call marilyn ugly.maybe your wife is a dog.Did u ever look at Brianns current wife Melinda? Now thats real ugly and a gold digger to boot.Marilyn was there for Brian from the beginning when he had no money.Shes the mother of his real children and shes beautiful.

  • @Desiree50 Thank you Sista you schooled that person from Team Melinda Go Team Marilyn Brian and Marilyn Forever

  • @mv12 You must be Team Melinda why are you guys so mean?

  • Does anyone else think this kind of sounds like the world is not enough by garbage?

  • Wonderful to see a happy Dennis at 2:11. Was that Karen Lamm nearby? Classic home footage, love it.

  • @YouMuseMe yes that was the late karen lamm next to dennis.she was so beautiful.toobad she had to leave this world so early, guess she with dennis now.peace Des

  • @Desiree50 I agree she and Dennis are back together somewhere up there

  • @Desiree50 Was Karen Lamm either the ex-wife or sister of the Chicago member Robert Lamm?

  • @Rotis59 She was the ex-wife, she left him for Dennis I think so.

  • Both Marilyns and Karen (Carpenters) vocals are excellent on this number. I probably prefer Marilyns, I like the middle alternate change of tonality she uses.

I do not understand the comment below, myself, about Marilyn singing flat, at all. She *does* use different tonalities to the original (karens) at times, and I'd bet Brian directed those, some of which are very subtly chosen. The other possibility is that some people hear 'sharp'!?

  • Great vocals by Marilyn. Great production by the best in the business ever.

They should have done far far more together if this was the end product.

  • I'm surprized by how much I like this version with Marilyn. Karen set the bar impossibly high, so there's absolutely no point in making a comparison. This is what it is, and that is very good in it's own right.

  • i just happened upon this vid on youtube......does anyone else realize this singer is singing flat?

  • I have this LP. I love it!

  • i love they way the honeys sing this song

  • Will someone walk me through the Brian Wilson connection here. Struggling here. Don't know about Carnie but it was Wendy that always caught my eye in the Wilson Phillips ditty videos.

  • @pmoyer50 - Marilyn Wilson was Brian Wilson's wife and is the mother of Carnie and Wendy Phillips.

  • I've been listening to "She and Him" with Zooey Deschanel. There are some interesting similarities to her style and Spring/Honeys.

  • @fuzzalicioous I agree, and i think it's authentic.

  • Anyone else notice that the original lyric in the 2d verse was retained for this recording? The one that sings "and I can't hardly wait to sleep with you again?" The only other person I've ever heard sing it that way is Bette Midler. I read someplace that Karen Carpenter initially didn't want to record the song at all because of that sexier lyric and the association with groupies, so the lyric was changed to fit her more virginal image.

  • I'd never heard this version of Superstar. Very nice but I'll always love the Karen Carpenter version the best, followed by the cover by the late Luther Vandross.

  • No dispute from me that Karen's vocals are superior. This version has more emotional impact for me because it has the virtue of being a "true" story of sorts.

  • YIKES!

  • interesting!! very surreal editing!!...

  • Karen owns this song, sorry.

  • yes she does, but I bet Carne could really do it honor.

  • It would be cool to hear Carnie sing it

  • I'll drink to that!

  • I love Marilyn's voice

    John hunter Phillips

  • Ido too. i have more of their stuff plus the Honeys. Can we be friends?

  • I like the french subtitles: lyrics for That's Not Me from Pet Sounds.

So many great versions of this tune.

  • I once had a dream so I packed up and split for paris? :P

  • brian is prop music

  • This song is awesome. Sad no plays The Honeys and American Spring on the radio Why?

  • The entire album "Spring" is fantastic. They do great versions of Beach Boys classics "This Whole World", "Forever", "Good Time". Just goes to prove that even though Brian was no longer spending a lot of time with the Beach Boys, he was still an amazing producer who could do songs like no one else.

  • This song is begging for a ska style remake. Can't top the original, but still good.

  • Leon Russell wrote the music and Bonnie Bramlett the lyrics.

  • Cool video you created here and thanks for the French subtitles for "That's not me" ;-)

  • Leon Russell wrote this song. BW did a killer production though. And Marilyn has a killer voice as does her sister Dianne too. The Carpenters made it a hit early 72'.

  • oh, fine!! i was thinking about carpenters when i searched for the song, but this version is so sweet and smooth...

  • Great version, and so was The Carpenters'. Rita Coolidge also did a nice version on the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, with Leon on piano.

  • Is this Marilyn singing lead or her sister Dianne? I think she sounds somewhat like her daughters from Wilson Phillips. Wendy.

  • It's Marilyn singing lead, with both Marilyn and Diane providing background vocals.

  • Thanks for clearing it up for me. :)

  • i dont like this song.

  • You're mean. Whats the matter with you?

    This song rocks!

  • Does Marilyn sing this? Was this song written by brian or just produced on this particular take? message me on AIM therealcrazyk PeAcE also I have his '67 SMiLE by the Beach Boys

  • No dude he didn't, but do you like it?

  • produso also par la David Sandler, Brian's rola éta simplá sporatica.
