  • @TheMacgrurry i didnt know till u told me...i thought it was a girl...no biggie tho its a cool tune...life is fulla surprises...))

  • @Pauly69s i listened to a documentary about the guy on canadien radio. the guy is amazingly talented and at some point dissappeared. the music is phenomenal

  • Fantastic clip!

  • wow natural real an angle

  • Esquerita and Little Richard's love child. Bowie seems old hat compared to this guy.

  • I never heard of this artist.

  • Rufus Thomas wrote the song & had a hit in '65 singing it himself. Rufus wrote a great R&B song, but I think Jackie Shane's vocal performance does the song even more justice than Rufus' rendition!

  • Wow! What a gem!

  • the best...is there any more film of his stage song....This seems to be the only one...It would be a shame not to have more visual representation of this great, ingenius act and music...the world is a poorer place if this is the only film....

  • the best...

  • Jammmmmmes Brown... AND THE FLAMES - MOVE OVER!!!!

  • not only is this killer this chick is a guy in 1965...........

  • Great entertainer. No proof Jackie and Little Richard were related.

  • eye LUV dis!

    ...))

  • AWSOME im 17 wished i lived in that era

  • I remember him and the song. But he was under the radar for the most part.

  • What a brave rebel !An androgenous glam artist 10 yrs. before it became a R''n"R fad. But Jackie was just being himself. An early&mid '60s "freak".But his audience didn't flock for a freak show. They went to dig Jackie's soulful singing & charisma! An excellent Canadian (CBC)1-hr. radio doc. on Jackie, which includes rare recordings,is at the CBC site at cbcDOTca.Just plug in "Jackie Shane " in search box.. Plus, a 3-pt. Cdn. TV doc "Yonge Street Stories" has a good segment on Jackie in pt. 2.

  • Just heard an hour documentary on Jackie Shane who is now living a private life in Nashville.

  • @TheTundyattundra On CBC radio 2? I heard that today too!

  • Sweet version of Walkin Da DAWG!

  • thanks for sharing

  • I love this! What a smooth arrangement and such a captivating voice! Also like the seldom-seen black band and white guys doing the backups and the sharp moves, Jackie's rendition of the early-day 'rap' verse in this is excellent too, and the smile is fantastic!

  • Jackie was resident at the Sapphire Tavern.

Nightly cruises for chicken on Young, Yorkville, wherever.

    Sui generis.

  • Super cool with a capital 'K'

  • What a smooth presentation.

  • My apologies to tassoss1!Thanks for posting this incredible footage of the Great Jackie Shane!

  • Awesome talent!Just recently found out about Jackie Shane.Did I hear Jackie is well living in Nashville?Hope he eventually decides to come out of hiding now so many people are digging his style of R&B.Thanks Gerry for posting this video!Jackie Shane should have been more famous than he was,But considering his admitted sexual orientation in the early 60"s looks to have been a giant obstacle in his way. That is a shame!

  • Awesome!

  • Wikipedia says Jackie Shane was a cousin of Little Richard. I went down to the Sapphire to see Jackie Shane with Frank Motley and the Hitchhikers many times in the late 60s. That was good R&B. It's great to see this video.

  • looks like they didnt !!! cause i got it,esp its a live recording by a artist that did not release it on the radio maybe?

  • The podcast is up for the documentary.

the link doesn't work here... but google this

Jackie Shane Canada's Unsung R&B Hero and the link comes up. Amazing doc!!!!

  • Spread the word!

  • CBC Radios Inside The Music presents I Got Mine, the story of the soul and R&B singer named Jackie Shane.

Shane was one of the most popular singers in Torontos thriving R & B scene of the mid-sixties. He was a remarkable figure for his day. This first-ever biography sheds some light on an important figure and time in Torontos music history. I Got Mine: The Story Of Jackie Shane airs Sunday February 28 at 3PM Eastern Time on Radio 2 and 9PM on Radio 1. Not scheduled for podcast at this time.

  • I'm sorry I missed this. I am a huge fan, he's wonderful! Does anyone have a copy of this show or a transcript, anything at all? Thanks.

  • @jjf0808: Any way to download the podcast NOW (1/25/12)?

  • @Neville6000 listened to this show the other day.Search for this "Listen Again: I Got Mine: The Story of Jackie Shane" . Run time is just under an hour. GREAT stuff.

  • i am in love with this

  • Brilliant!! Yip!

  • Close. The song was recorded by William Bell ('You Don't Miss Your Water') in 1962. Stax Records.

  • sony-fuck off-you dont OWN music, music is owned by all who appreciate it...great track, superb singer, what guts it must have took to look like that back then, more power to him...top upload mate. respect.

  • Why do Sony think they own his clip? Is it because of the show? Jackie Shane never recorded this song, and he was signed to Modern, whose catalogue is not owned by Sony!

  • Hey Sony-Please Leave obscure stuff like this up on Youtube-We will never see it otherwise.

Is the guitar player Alphonso Young?

  • She's hot!

  • It's actually a guy lol

  • Johnny Jones & The King Casuals ("Soul Poppin'") are the backing band and I think that's the Hytones on background vocals

  • Thank you for posting this exceptional talent! Jackie deserves to have a compilation of material available for fans to appreciate!

  • NICE

  • Fantastic , Great Band !!

  • He was just a bit before my time but I love his song "any other way". Sort of a pre Prince or Michael Jackson.

  • Thanks for hipping me to this guy. I found Any Other Way on Amazon Mp3 dowloads and it is great. Peace Out.

  • that 'woah come on baby' at the end sounds like a start of a great improv. Shame it gets cut off. Also that clap and stop at .46 is soo cool...

  • edfou5, don't feel bad Dick Clark thinks he's a women too.

  • Incredible !

  • So a friend sends this link to me and I think to myself... I was 13 in 1965, soaking up music like a sponge, as I have all my life. I'm serious about my music. I know my stuff.... so how is it that I never heard of this woman? And then it came to me....

  • Comment removed

  • that's not a woman! its a guy

  • BS-tell me when have sequins ever been in fashion for men....

  • Guess you've never heard of a "Nudie suit"-

"While modern day Country artists will appear onstage with blue jeans, white t-shirt, and a very expensive black cowboy hat (for men), or extravagant evening gowns that look like they were designed for the Academy Awards (for women), there was a time in Country Music where sequins were in fashion, for both men and women, and the more sequins, the better. This was the direct result of one man, known in the business as "Nudie.""

  • No I didn't know that. But country music has never been in fashion for men

  • he was a canadian artist who was openly gay that's why he's dressed like that

  • Hi all,

Sorry to break it to you but apparently, Jackie died in the late nineties.

  • Hi, I'm very sorry to hear this if it's true. You say "apparently". Is this just a rumor?

I am a huge fan and while it would seem likely in view of the fact that nothing more has been heard from Jackie for a long time I am wondering if anyone really knows the truth here? I was a bit young to have seen Jackie perform but was thrilled to meet people who had! (I live in Toronto where he performed.) Thanks.

  • This is fantastic!!!! I saw Jackie Shane perform live at the Palais Royale ( a dance Hall located on the shore of Lake Ontario on the east side of Sunnyside Swimming Pavilion). This was sometime in the late sixties and is still one the best performances I have ever attended. At that time, Jackie wore a blonde Marilyn Monroe type of wig and was the most beautiful looking person. Jackie if you are still around, please come out of hiding for your adoring fans. You are absolutely the best.

  • Thanks for this posting. He does have beautiful features. Did you get to chat at all?

  • love this kid: where is he and how can he get his overdue kudos?

  • Black Cool

  • nice one for sharin Andy mate!

    cool as F*CK!!

    Lee

    Liverpool Mods.

  • Jackie one of the best

  • If you think this is good, you should check out Rufus Thomas' version...it can't be beat!

  • woooooooh, god damn

  • Prince meets Little Richard meets Eartha Kitt !!!???? Best comment ever!!! LOL....I couldn't have said it any better myself!!

    Terrific posting!!

  • What an incredible post!

Prince meets Little Richard meets Earth Kitt!

Wish I knew the real truth about what happened to Jackie Shane.

Love this song! I also love "Any Other Way"

Jackie's music was just as good as any other chart toping songs in that era.

Thank you so much for posting!

  • "Earhta Kitt" hahahahhahaha

  • @collinsjamesl - Though I haven't read any precise details, a post at queermusic heritage dot us says that, as of a year ago, Jackie is still alive.

  • Jackie is slinging attitude all over the stage. Great performance. Thanx for posting.

  • I read on another string (for "Any Other Way") that Jackie is believed to have been murdered long ago in California but has never been found. Great that there is a video of Jackie singing but it sure doesn't look like his show at the Sapphire.

  • Hi, that is dreadful news. I haved lived in Toronto for quite awhile but Jackie was before my time, (I don''t usually wish I was older but for tI do wish I could have seen him) although I met people when I moved here who had met him. Do you recall details as to why he was murdered or anything? Thanks.

  • Jackie... Come out, come out,(so to speak)wherever you are! It's your time to shine...Where is the clip from?

  • You're saying this is a guy in drag?

  • YESIREE

  • WOW---that was great! Drag 1965 style!!!!

  • Mary Clayton also used to perform at the bluenote before she went to england and sang gimme shelter with the stones....any other way was originally written and performed by William Bell whos career was much bigger than Jackies but jackies version of "any other way" was better maybe because of the double entendre

  • I remember going to see him in a bar on Yonge (guess it was the Sapphire, according to this thread). He kept teasing his bass player named 'Bruce'. Bruce was sort of shy about the teasing.

I have two 45's I bought back then - 'Any Other Way', 'In my Tenement', ' Comin Down' and (forget). All I have to do is find where I put them.

  • "Sticks and Stones" is flip of "Any Other Way"

"in My Tenement" flip is "Comin' down"

  • nice track

  • Soooo good!

  • i love you jackie

  • Jackie Shane used to be a regular at the Bluenote on Yonge STreet in Toronto in 1963 64. i know cause so was I

  • BIG AL AND WIFE JERRY'S CLUB BLUENOTE Actually, I never saw Jackie there but I loved listening to the sounds of Diane Brooks, her husband Whitey on drums, Jack Hardin, George Jimmy (is that was he was calling himslf then) when he sang "I'd like to thank the man who found me" To weak to break the chains that bind me" "dunt da do"

"I'm JUST A PRISONER" The music use to reverberate in that place. There was a black guy who could really dance and he was stone cold deaf but he could feel it.

  • Me Three. Great musical spot

  • Hi, where was the Bluenote located, what address please, also the Sapphire, if you know. I've lived in T.O. for a long time but this was a bit before my time. I am curious, though, as to where they were. And did you meet Jackie? Thanks.

  • if anyone has any more videos or any information about the great jackie shane please contact me,,,thank you!!

  • Now he was before Ziggy Stardust , Prince, and Boy George.

  • Sapphire

  • Where was Sapphire Tvern located? I know it was in Toronto...but address?

  • i wonder if prince was influenced by him?

  • All-black, Nashville-produced, groundbreaking television program Night Train.

  • Anyone know what show this is?...looks to me like Frank Motley and his group in back..(with the trumpet)

  • Probably would be Frank. Frank Motley and his Motley Crew were usually Jackie's back up band. The also dropped in at the Bluenote occasionally. The Sapphire was on Yonge Street just south of College as I remember.

  • First time I've ever seen what Jackie Shane looks like. Heard him first on a 45 of "Any Other Way".

  • We used to see Jackie Shane at high school dances. He put on a very wild show, with lots of makeup and glitter, and rolling around on the floor. The priests chaperoning us did not have any idea what to make of this.

The song "Any Other Way" is on Volume 1 of teh "Made in Canada, Our Rock and Roll History" box set. This CD also features other Toronto bands like the Mandala and the Ugly Ducklings. Great stuff!

Thanks for posting this video, it is quite a treat, and I did not know it existed.

  • marianna, do you know anyone who has the box set?

  • I have it, I will be happy to share it. Not sure if I can post music here, though, but can forward via e-mail if you are interested, it is only a single song. Marianne

  • Thanks for your generosity to share it. Do you have Jackie's number one Chum Chart topper "ANY OTHER WAY"?I've been looking for that recording but would appreciate anything else. yurishep at hotmail dot com

  • I remember posters promoting Jackie's appearances all over downtown Toronto. At the time I thought "Any Other Way" was an international hit. It wasn't til later that I realized it was only popular locally. No one knows for sure what happened to him.

  • unique piece of musical history - thanks for posting. hope it stays on youtube for awhile.

  • Rythmic, male backround dancers were in short supply during the making of this video. That is why these three polka dancers were recruited and suited up.

  • "Polka dancers"? I love it.

  • Jackie's appearance here is priceless. I/m wondering if he could have inspired "little Richard" or vice versa. This video is probably from the late fifties early 60's. Can anyone date it?

  • probably '64 or '65 (definitely not fifties)

  • I remember listening and dancing to jackie's music as a teenager but this is the first time I've had an opportunity to actually see him.

Does anyone else have jackie's other big hit,.......

    "ANY OTHER WAY"

I believe it made number #1 on the Chum Charts for 16 weeks. I would be grateful to be able to hear it again or for anything else by this talented entertainer.

Thanks so much TASSOSS1 for this very rare video.

    george shepherd Toronto Ontario Canada

  • Hi fruglescot...yeah, I remember Jackie too. I bugged my parents to let me go see him at a club downtown ( Toronto ). It was one of those " all ages " places and my cousin went but they wouldn't let me go because I was only 11 ( 1963 ). I wish I knew what ever happened to him. I still hear other people doing " Any Other Way ". It's so nice to run into someone else who remembers.......Gina

  • Ditto for me too Gina

    "Tell em that I'm happy",

    "Tell em that I'm gay"

"Tell em, I wouldn't have it,

    any other way.

Do dewt, do dewt, dewt do dewt

Do you suppose that he was using "GAY" in the original meaning?

Do you remember the name of the club?

    ........ george

  • I'm sure he was the term in reference to his sexuality...it fit's perfectly with the lyrics of the song...if you read the liner notes on his only LP, there are references to his "preferences" ...amen

  • George asked: "was he using "GAY" in the original meaning? the name of the club?

Jackie DEFINITELY was using the term "gay" to mean gay. When he was in TO in 1968, he was dating his 20-yr-old chauffeur -- Jackie rented a Lincoln Continental to "cruise" around in.

And the club where he played with frank motley's band was called the Sapphire, at Victoria and Richmond or Adelaide.

I knew jackie quite well and even wrote the liner notes for his LP, 'Jackie Shane Live At The Sapphire."

  • Wow, that's amazing that you actually knew Jackie! He's oen of my favorite singers ever and although I seldom wish I was older I do wish I could have been around to see Jackie perform. Do you have any idea what happened to him? Do you think he might still be alive?

    Thanks a lot.

    Regards, Sharon

  • To GerryLincoln: It's Sharon again! About how old was Jackie when you knew him? He looks to be only in his twenties here. And as I asked in other posting, do you think he might still be alive? He's is incredible!

    Thanks.

    Regards, Sharon

  • Sharon, I haven't heard from Jackie since the early seventies. He just seemed to disappear. There were rumors that he had committed suicide but I hope that isn't true. I'm guessing he was in his late twenties back then, but of course, you never ask a lady her age. :)
