I liked this game, but could only beat it as one player with 2 joysticks.

You needed the 2nd stick to control you 'firing direction' and the other to run about. Without it - I think the game was impossible.

Main reason I picked up the Midway Arcade Treasures collection. I bought the SNES version when it came out. It was a pretty good port. Still have that cart to this day. It's a cool game to play every now and then.

I actually played the arcade version via Midway Arcade Treasures, and on the PlayStation2 version of MAT1, it takes an average of about 35-40 minutes to complete due to the lag.
