Chris DePiero was my grade 7 teacher at St. Michael's College School six years ago and was instrumental in reviving the Junior 'A' St. Michael's Buzzers. Three years later when he accepted a position as Oshawa's asssitant coach, the College School community was very proud of him. He knows the game of hockey better than anyone and maximizes the value of each and everyone player on his team. He's going to go far, best of luck Mr. DePiero!
Another great interview. While I have bashed Tavares in the past, I realize that he is an elite talent (head and shoulders above Duchene, too). I just think that Hedman should go first, and that Tavares would be a bad fit in Toronto.
Anyways, I'm getting quite excited. Headed to Montreal on a Greyhound in about 27 hours.
Btw: The Score should hire you for Hardcore Hockey Talk, Steve. Because those clowns have no idea what they're talking about.
Well, first of all, from what I've seen, I think Tavares is more effective as a winger.
Now, Tavares wouldn't fit into a Ron Wilson system, in the same way that Mats Sundin wouldn't, at least I think. Tavares' speed and defensive play aren't as bad as some say it is, but it can hold him back. It's that he doesn't block shots (like Ron Wilson demands) and he doesn't hit or fight (which Brian Burke seems to demand).
I just think Brayden Schenn would be a much better fit.
Agreed, I believe, and do not get me wrong, Tavares is an ELITE PLAYER, just the kind I would like to have on my team.
But Hedman on the other hand, is just a completely rare talent that mixes Height and Skating ability (Zdeno Chara and Chris Pronger come to mind) so I would take him first.
Do not necesarily agree on the Toronto thing, I believe both Tavares and Hedman would work on any given team
please don't compare hedman to beasts and monsters like pronger or chara. Hedman says himself that he doesn't like to be a physical player. The kid is a waste of wonderful size and genetics. If he grew a pair and threw his body around like he should I would love the guy. But Toronto does not need a puck moving defenseman, we need a goal scorer. I don't want a kid who will pinch to the net just to leave a odd man rush the other way
Lidstrom isnt physical, but having hedmen and schenn being such young rookies they have soo much to develope and therefore tornonto would have a top notch d in the near future not to mention their other d men having a solid d like that is a great start for them to start over as a team.
Steve, I really hope this is the start of a brilliant career for you, because you ask much better and more personal questions than any of the talking heads at cbc or tsn.
I enjoy your recent interviews Steve. Don't know if it's just me, but the style you interview and introduce the videos remind me a lot like the style George Strompolopolous does it in "The Hour". Maybe it's just the black dress shirt. Don't mean to offend or anything, keep the videos coming!

This is the kind of interview to put inside your portfolio for any job you will apply for concerning mass media. This is simple, efficient, limpid.
Exactly to the point all the time. Very informative.

jw, why do you think Tavares would be a bad fit in Toronto? Toronto needs a future number one centreman.

If he's an elite player, I would want him in Toronto.

Mats Sundin is also an elite player, and he would never fit into a Ron Wilson system.
Anyways, it sounds as though the Leafs simply have their sights set on getting Brayden Schenn or Jared Cowen, and I can't complain there.

yeah and leafs seem interested in Jonas Gustavsson as well
