I'm 24 and I still cry every time I watch this. Yes, I even cried during HBO's happier ending version. If you didn't get even the slightest of emotion, your truly a heartless soul
well, I'm 22 yo. I was sergeant in Army. I was in war which was between Georgia and Russia in 2008. My boys dyed in front of me.. i thought i was tough but this video still makes my cry like a child :((
I used to never cry at any movie. The first time I saw this, I cried for half an hour straight. :( Amazing what these artists can do! This is why I love animation.
I think because there is no vocal script makes it makes it all the more emotional. My guardian read Hans story to me when I was little to show me how lucky I was. Disney finally did a good job on an original story.
I remember seeing this... it's found on the second DVD of the 2006 Special Edition of the Little Mermaid DVD set from Disney. You have to select "Studio Backlot" from the selections and then scroll down the sub menu to find it. You won't find it in stores anymore, Disney pulled it in 2007 with their 7-year cycle for classic films. Supposedly it was meant for the Fantasia 2000 as a mini-story. Even hardened criminals would cry for this story... maybe they should be made to watch it...
o..o! i remeber my mom reading this to me in korean when i was a little kid. i used to cry instead of falling sleep. i always thought it was unfair for such a young kind girl to be treated that way. i never knew other people knew this story too. ;) brings back tearful memories.
i was literally trying to hold in the sobbs so that my mom and brother wouldn't know i was crying. this was the sweetest/saddest little story i've ever seen. *sniff sniff
I read this story when I was a child. Today, watching, again and again, I think we are lucky, you and me. Because of that, we mustn't give up when we fall.
i remember reading this story when i was only 6, though i remember reading that she saw a shooting star which reminded her about how her grandmother used to tell her that whenever a shooting star falls, a person dies. then she sees her grandmother and she takes her to heaven. brings back memories :')
Awe stuck here! I came to this Video via a recommendation from the Nostalga Critic. Sad but happy endings. Sigh. Still a beatifully made little short. Didn't know the back story however now that I do it still touches me.
What people have to understand is that this wasn't really supposed to be a sad ending, more like a happy ending. Think about it, she died going to heaven and she died by having her soul being carried by the one human being she loved most, her grandmother. It brings me to tears because I know she's in a better place, as opposed to the cruel, cold world where she was beaten by her father and was neglected by people. I cried knowing she had happy visions before she passed. Don't cry of sadness.
@XavierOgura No... Its about a Poor girl in Russia who tries to use the matches she sells to keep warm and she wishes to have good things, and to be with her grandmother or mother, but alas, she dies from the cold. I don't see anything about addiction in there.
This is not disney, this is a danish story. HC was a outsider nobody liked. His revenge on Danish posh was to give them child storys ment for adults. Every danish person know this. but nobody talk about it. Ingmar Bergman! give the would a view of swedish boring life, and this is art! good for what? Live and born in this anti happy part of the would I know. Viva Spain !
Yes, on New Year's Eve a poor girl tries to sell matches in the street. She is freezing, but afraid to go home because her father will beat her for not selling any. She takes shelter in a nook and lights the matches to warm herself and in their glow sees beautiful visions. She looks up and sees a shooting star and recalls her grandmother saying that a shooting star is someone going to heaven. She lights a match, sees her grandmother, then lights them all to keep her nearby.
She dies and her grandmother takes her soul to heaven. The next morning people find her body. The story was written in 1845 by Hans Christian Andersen. A terrible tale, but one that still resonates even today.
@Courtmoo Its heartwrenching to wathch, but I disagree that it is sad. It is beautiful and uplifting and if only death could be like that,,, perhaps it is
This has to be the most upsetting story I have ever seen, I dont know why but as an animation it makes it more upsetting. However it does present a message we all should know and care about.
I agree with all of you. People always say Dec is the most wonderful time of year but its not always true. Most of the people who end up getting things for friends and family are the one doing it for people in the same Class. Middle or higher class not letting their kids down. they don't think about the poor. Even with the economic this bad they are not willing to give up some stuff to help the needy. Thanks the economic people stop giving.
In my opinion this does have a happy ending. It is just not a traditional one. She is now free of pain and with her beloved grandmother. No longer dealing the abuses of life.
My teacher read this 2 me when i was in elementary school. People didn't like the ending or understand it at the time. But i did. And i honestly thought it was beautiful. Maybe i was just ( and still am) a weird kid............. oh well thats okay with me!
my reading teachermade us watch this and i said great now im gonna go home and cry my self to sleep so i showed my mom an in the middle she asked me does it have a good ending i told her "lets justsay she is in a happier place" then she said "y did u do that to me and make me watch that " then i felt bad!! :(
It is not supposed to be happy. Anybody who has actually been cold and starving would not consider this a happy ending. It is supposed to make greedy people who wish for more gain much needed perspective on how wrong that mindset is and how they should have consider that others would be happy with even half of what they have. Whether there is a heaven or not, it is better to be someone that has compassion for one's fellow man than to believe in a God in vain and pretend this is a happy ending.
20 years ago we watched this on a projector Movie player ( you know the kind you turn the dial when it beeps) in elementary school It made me cry then and still make me cry now.
I think you might have to change your tags to this site as porn keeps coming up. I was watching this with my children and when the video ended a porn video came up. Thanks.
Another updated version of the old movie I watched as a kid. The heart-wrenching sadness is almost too much to bear. This story was written to show a little girl's struggle against society's indifference and apathy . Such a simple movie that speaks volumes.
@meeranaam You mentioned a version you saw as a kid...I am looking for an older version (Im 55) but cant remember much of it but I am trying to find it. Im not sure of your age but if you know of the older version could you please share it with me? I really want to share it with my grandkids. None of these here look familiar...Thank you for your time!!!!!
I think it was the movie that had Sarah Jessica Parker as the little girl...came out in the mid 70's and was just as sad as this cartoon version!! I'm pushing 45, so a lot of these movies were staples of my childhood Christmas. I hope that helps! I'm sure Amazon would carry the movie...they have boxed sets of a lot of classics we remember.
In 1998, Víctor Gaviria, a Colombian filmmaker, made a live-action variation of this Andersen's story by the name of "La vendedora de rosas" ("The rose seller"). I recommend it if you can get it.
For my school's writing assessment, we gotta write this up and make our teacher cry. Gonna be easy because this is such a heartwarming and breaking tale of love and loss, tears and tragedy.
I can't stop crying. How many girls and boys are in the same situation right now? Too much to not stop crying for them, feeling useless that I can't take them all home and give them love and shelter. This is too painful.
Btw i'm a person who really loves christmas & loves the happiness, lights, family & the entertainment of christmas stories. Especially this one. Nostalgia Critic was right... This is one of Disney's best animation Christmas shorts. Representing that everyone needs a home & happiness on Christmas. I'm sorry I took up some of your guys' time but i had 2 get that out in the open because again. I love Christmas & everyone deserves a chance. Pass this message around 2 everyone. Happy early Christmas
It's so pretty & really brings out the spirit of... U REALLY SHOULD STOP BEING A BASTARD & LET UR LITTLE GIRL COME OUT OF THE COLD!!! Geez, is it true her dad wouldn't let her come in the house because she couldn't sell the matches or she like the other version. Where it was based off the Hans Christan Anderson story where her nana was on a runaway carriage & it fell off the cliff & now she's homeless trying to live off the streets & almost dies?
I think some people on here are right, I congrats Disney on being able to push the limit, & by fact showing kids thats its not always a cinderella ending proves to them that lifes not a fairytale, but yet again, a lot of Disney movies DO show that already. Yes, Mufasa dies but it shows that Simba can still make it through. Good job Disney. :)
How can anyone dislike this? What? Just because it's Disney means it HAS to have a happy ending? NO. Just no. This was so amazing. It deserves more likes and appreciation.
It upsets me a little to see how many people are saying "I want a different ending" to what? She got her own happy ending. Yes, she died, but in the story it tells how she went to "Heaven" which I'm sure is far better than the world that doesn't let her come home if she's freezing to death because she never sold the last matches. The ending makes the story, and Hans understood the fact that LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS A HAPPY ENDING. :I People live in fantasy worlds, and that's why there is so much hurt.
@imagineloveneverdies I agree for the most part. There is muchmore suffering in life than a lot of us think. For many, life is BRUTAL. Whether it be from poverty which includes malnutrition; flat out starvation, false imprisonment, rape (both male & female) murder, scams, abuse (self & that inflicted by others) & many other ways, life is BRUTAL. Many would rather wear their rose colored glasses, but mainly it is the serving of SELF that is the greatest oppressor. That & the greedy in charge.
@imagineloveneverdies This is why movies suck now. Old stories are having their endings changed. New stories are terribly written cause writers have forgotten how to deliver emotions rather than entertainment.
@imagineloveneverdies and that's why HCA ended it that way, so we would embrace humanity, otherwise people would go on thinking life always has a happy ending while people continue to suffer..he raised awareness
@imagineloveneverdies You're a fucking moron. People like you destroy great stories because you are too much of a fucking coward to deal with real life. Happy endings are too often used because spineless cretins like you need to be comforted. You loser. I hope you die of AIDS. Or better yet, I hope that if you have a daughter, SHE freezes to death. Dumbshits like you shouldn't be permitted to breed.
@conquerlord1 Huh? Wh..What the hell? Did you even read my comment? Holy shit, dude. Back off, and quit assuming you know other people alright? Holy crap.
@conquerlord1 You should really just read what I wrote, you called me a moron but you're the one sitting there typing about something you didn't even read properly. I said that Hans Anderson wrote stories that were so good because they didn't have the typical "happy ending" I said that he knew life isn't always happy endings. But you seriously need to read before you preach. Asshole.
Try watching this with Enigma - Return To Innocence as soundtrack.

I can't stop crying. How many girls and boys are in the same situation right now? Too much to not stop crying for them, feeling useless that I can't take them all home and give them love and shelter. This is too painful.

@SNGarza its a story that disney revised for a short animation film... there isn't anything wrong with the story they had chosen
Zeldakittycat 2 months ago
@SNGarza Is this better or worse than Bambi's mother? Simba's dad?
Disney is screwed up sometimes but like Zeldakittycat said it's not their story

Btw i'm a person who really loves christmas & loves the happiness, lights, family & the entertainment of christmas stories. Especially this one. Nostalgia Critic was right... This is one of Disney's best animation Christmas shorts. Representing that everyone needs a home & happiness on Christmas. I'm sorry I took up some of your guys' time but i had 2 get that out in the open because again. I love Christmas & everyone deserves a chance. Pass this message around 2 everyone. Happy early Christmas

Oh my god, did she die? :'(
It's so pretty & really brings out the spirit of...

@HaleySaturday12 She actually froze to death, yes. But her soul was freed.

A tear of happiness from me. Instead of living her life in the cold with a bastard father who doesn't feed her. She deserves an eternity of bliss.

@imagineloveneverdies Amen to that

Holy crap.
imagineloveneverdies 1 month ago
@conquerlord1 You should really just read what I wrote, you called me a moron but you're the one sitting there typing about something you didn't even read properly. I said that Hans Anderson wrote stories that were so good because they didn't have the typical "happy ending" I said that he knew life isn't always happy endings. But you seriously need to read before you preach. Asshole.
