  • Leno was very clean and very funny in his road days He was definitely Letterman's best guest in the early years

  • The end of this professional friendship was the biggest shame in television history.

  • the sum of all comments here is exactly zero.

  • love the "Chest Fever" outro!!! those were the good ole days

  • jay leno did letterman's show so many times its crazy... Letterman, you didnt even do it once... letterman you are bitter... go team leno..

  • Dave illustrates Comedy 101: Always bring back a word or part of a joke later; e.g., Kimba.

  • The "give and take" between Letterman and Leno was always so choreographed. My favorite episodes were the ones where they'd make jokes about that.

  • Why don't they get along anymore?

  • Leno's great- Letterman's laughing so much he's getting woozy-

  • @ThePiscean60 based on letterman's view of leno today, it could be just pity laughing to make an old friend look good....leno has his jokes pre-scripted from the get-go and i hear that letterman was instructed to lead into certain topics (politics and such) related to leno's jokes so as not to catch him at an actual spontaneous moment....

  • Leno is NOT funny and never has been. If it wasnt for the pre rehearsed routine he has worked up he'd be slow and lost as usual. This snake should have stayed gone when he stepped down the first time.

  • He mentions he'll be in Monroeville Pa...I bet I went to that show. We used to go see Leno all the time.

  • I miss this Leno.

  • The two were truly good friends and had a great chemistry. I kinda wonder what would have happened if they didn´t become enemies in the

early 90´s. It would have been great to see these to together, great chemistry.

  • Dave is my favourite, and I love Conan, but Leno is still a great comedian. I certainly don't hate him. Though, I don't agree with him coming back to the Tonight Show - the right thing to do would be to refuse it, even if they decided to give Conan the boot.

  • Leno is a douche

  • Notice the 5:26-5:28 marker. Jay's smile at 5:26 is such an eerie affectation (the way he stops it immediately). Creepy stuff. At least with Letterman, you got the feeling that although he was an asshole, he was a GENUINE asshole.

  • We should have listened to Bill Hicks.

  • man leno was killing it. he was hilarious

  • "You don't have enough money, you fucking whore, you have to sell snacks to bovine America?" - Bill Hicks

  • Wow, Leno's always been a huge dick.

  • How was Leno a dick in this clip? Letterman is clearly the dick.

  • This is historic footage. I don't think we'll ever see Jay Leno and David Letterman on the same stage again. Jay is very funny in these videos, he should definitely watch these again as inspiration for when he goes back to The Tonight Show.

  • Jay and Dave were friends at this time and Dave was having fun. Jay came up with lines that genuinely made dave laugh and Dave would always prompt him to say it again.

  • Leno can read in between his lines and dish it back out to him without the audience even noticing.

This is history in the making.

  • Letterman seems sorta like a control freakjerk.

Has to jump into what you're saying way before you even finish speaking.

Always observes people with that professer prententious stare. To quickly question what you have said to show your inadequacies.

Well if anyone here is inadequate. It is letterman. Supposed one of the hierarchies of desk comedian interviewers, is merely a self-involved figment of Americas want and new self future appealing social economic miserably ethnic hope for USA.

  • ChrisWatch seems like your projecting a lot of bullshit, i personally found he let leno talk a shit load.

  • Face it grandpa letterman is an asshole.

I don't care if Bigjawed leno turned him over in his sleep.

all I know is, that letterman needs to learn a little respect in communication.

It's not that hard to observe yourself.

  • and leno needs to learn a little respect in his profession.

  • actually dave was jealous of jay bak then..cos jay filled in for johnny on the tonight show..at least once a week..which lead to him getting the job full time

  • he's so unfunny it's painful

  • yadayadayada blahblahblah

  • 4:45 he sounds like Tony Soprano. When he says 'New York'.

  • This was 23 years ago!!!

  • I like Leno better.

  • me too, letterman is so boring

  • I think Dave meant it as a shot when he said "i have a show to do" which insinuated that Jay did not .

  • look who has the best show now, and in such a short time compared to letterman, even o'brien has a better show than letterman does

  • Leno hires his chin out as a snow plow in Winter!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Leno looks like the house keeper in The Brady bunch here ,ok Mr B LOL

  • I thought that to!

  • They really seemed to like each other!!! That's so cool! Have they been able to make amends?

  • why should they make amends? about what? i didn't know they hated each other. i heard letterman was pissed off because he thought he would get the tonight show when johnny carson stepped down, but it went to leno instead. but is that why they hate each other? i mean, letterman is still rich, and he still has a great, or at least a popular show. he should get over it. if thats what it is.

  • There's a fantastic tv movie about the whole controversy. Leno does not come off very well. Called 'The Late Shift'.

  • Leno is a stand-up comic that's why he's the best at the monologues (prepared jokes) and a little more uncomfortable with the interviews. Letterman is a broadcaster (originally a weatherman), that's why he's best at commenting and ad-libbing. The main problem with Letterman he's always trying to find a place to insert an ad-lib (not every guest needs to have a punch line). At least Leno seems interested in what his guests have to say.

  • @Ramubay from what i heard, leno frequently interrupts his guests and is too glued to a teleprompter to really listen to what they're saying....these days, even though he may not look like it, letterman seems the most interested in his guests based on the high amounts of questions he can ask back and forth...

  • @Ramubay

but letterman has the x factor that none of these other talk show hosts have! his shows are never dull! and he is just as funny as leno! (even if he did start off as a weatherman) rofl who watches leno?? david letterman & jimmy kimmel are ruling late nights,,, plain & simple

  • @Ramubay Jay doesn't know how to conduct a good interview though. Letterman has always been the best talk show host when going one on one with a guest. Jay is the better stand-up, and Conan is sort of good at both but the master of neither.

  • @ccrosbie33 Conan doesn't seem to me be a jerk or an asshole, whereas Jay and Dave are big jerks and assholes with little if any ethics. Not being a jerk or an asshole counts for a lot in my book. And having some ethics is always a good choice.

  • @Ramubay Leno tricked you good then. In Bill Carter's book, "The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy" he reveals an A-list celebrity that complained that Jay doesn't even LOOK at the guest when they speak...he's looking just past them at cue cards, waiting to ask the next question. So he's not having a conversation--just merely going down a list of questions. He's been doing like almost 20 years and he still hasn't improved his interview skills? Geez.

  • @JustinSosa You misunderstood my statement. I stated he "seems" interested, at least he goes through the motions where Dave goes out of his way to seem bored. I am not a fan of either Jay or Dave, they are both creeps and their formats don't lend themselves to serious conversation. These are entertainment shows not talk shows and I don't really expect much from either of their interviews as opposed to Charlie Rose or Tavis Smiley.

  • @Ramubay Sorry you're not qualified to write off Dave or Jay if you don't like late night in general and prefer watching Rose or Smiley: two well accomplished journalists--NOT comedians.Dave has no problem showing his boredom when he interviews flavor-of-the-months/reality stars. Dave has had many stimulating conversations with many meaningful people: Obama, Condoleeza Rice, Bill Clinton etc. Watch his interview with Herman Cain and tell me A) he's bored B) Leno could have done better.

  • @JustinSosa But they are still both jerks with no ethics. Both lied to their audience on numerous occasions and that's something I don't allow (sorry YT doesn't allow room for blogging long explanations). Neither have been funny in my lifetime but if you want to go back to the beginning of their careers they did some things that were funny.

  • @Ramubay Right, I suppose the guy who watches Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley knows what's funny then? Letterman has had more memorable moments on his show in the last ten years than Jay has had in his whole tenure at The Tonight Show. Letterman has made a huge dent in the word of late night...his influence is immense. Ask Conan and Jimmy Kimmel.

  • @JustinSosa Doesn't matter. I'm referring to interviews. They both stink. You're talking about jokes, let them do nightclubs. Regardless, they're both jerks who've lied to their audience. You don't care about that because you have zero ethics. Good for you.

  • @Ramubay Once again, any person with no taste in comedy such as yourself shouldn't really be participating in this discussion. And of course I'm talking about jokes...what the fuck do you think late night television has been for the last 50 years?? A monologue, comedy sketches = JOKES. What planet are you on?

And I have no ethics? Nice. That means a lot from a person whose channel is dedicated to girls in bikinis and short skirts. Talk to you later, perv!

  • @JustinSosa My comments were limited to the interview portions of the show. That concept shouldn't be TOO hard for you to understand. Unless you're retarded...oh sorry, that didn't occur to me until now. I don't get along well with the mentally challenged, my apologies.

  • @JustinSosa How are bikinis & short skirts not ethical? WHAT A PRUDE! Does an old fart like you even know these beautiful girls? The short skirts are the girls at red carpet events trying their best to look their best...and they do! The bikinis are the girls at beaches trying their best to look their best...and they do! What's unethical about bikinis at the beach or a short skirt at a red carpet function? My channel is as much a fashion channel for girls as it is a fan channel for boys.

  • Kimba would eat Emanual Lewis.

  • I'd forgotten that Jay Leno used to be funny; but no one was(or is) funnier than Letterman. Too bad they had a falling out because they seem to genuinely like each other.

  • No one was funnier than Letterman....? Now that is funny.

  • The two just have different styles. Jay Leno is obviously the funnier one but the charm and grace of Letterman as a host is also unbeatable.

  • wow he said Monroeville, PA i am like 25 min away :P

  • it's too bad they had a falling out. They're funny together

  • How long has it been since these two have talked?

  • ...and i still do think Jay's funnier than Letterman is now days....until Jimmy Kimmel came along. lol Nah, Jay's still good as he ever was. Jimmy just "upped" it a little with his segments where he finds funny clips every now and then, and his uncensorship, bleeping wether they need it or not, that's pretty funny as well.

  • I think Jay just has better writers.

  • Probably because Jay writes alot of his own stuff

  • jay seems coked out

  • looking back now, 80's interviews had a rapid pace to them, or at least each sentence has a portion that's said kind of quick

  • Geat vid...5 stars...Leno Rocks

  • leno always has his come backs.

  • lol "come".

  • THANKS fivealex2009 watch your vids all the time, you rock!!!

  • at 4:35 he says NUCULAR!!!

  • Leno was funnier then

  • Maybe he was funnier then, he certainly was funnier than Letterman.

  • I totally forgot that Leno was on the Doritos' commericals.

  • yea, I wasn't even born then.

  • yay the kimba clip!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember laughing so hard at Jay Leno the stand up. Saw him live in 1987 and had a great time

  • Kimba!
