Great choir.... I sang on the Claflin Univ concrt Choir back in 1990-91 96-99 we sang this song this version.......great sounding choir oh how i miss those days.....
You can see what color the people in the picture are. Hey remdem did you here when the soloist turned the vibrato on. I don't know if she was black but that was a Baptist church move.
There is nothing "wide" about the vibrato. The sound is forward, not wide. Singing straight tones seeks to control the natural vibrato of the voice, which is bad vocal technique and puts too much strain on the larynx and vocal bands. The soloist sings the song with much passion and her sound is definitely forward, not wide... I appreciate the ensemble's careful approach at this song. It sounds amazing.
Pianoboi90....you just showed yourself to be musically ignorant. The wide vibrato as you called it can be attributed to 2 things:1. The richesness of the African-American voice. 2. The character of the Spirituals that they sang. Besides, this is America, not England.
@remdem I agree except that according to the picture and what I know of tone- these people aren't black. And I don't think that richness is exclusive to the voice quality of any race. I think it just come with being human.
@hungrylittlepuppy - I don't know why you assume that tone can't come from people of African descent. Look at Kathleen Battle. I too have a similar tone to the people you're listening to. And on top of it all Moses Horgan was a famous African American composer of Negro Spirituals. It would be understandable if the choir and the soloists were all of African descent.
@johnathangibbs EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING! The first thing I thought was "omg no wide vibrato! why cant they do this all the time???" then i quickly realized that I have this cd haha
