Not the best solo at all, but he's still a damn good drummer. People seem to judge him by these solos only. Try listening to some live versions of Double Talkin' Jive for example, especially those from 1993.

Oh for fuck's sake! As a drummer I know there are better soloists and indeed drummers out there as a whole but look at this in it's context. This wasn't done as a Youtube competition. It was a guy getting into the vibe of a gig and giving it what he was feeling at the time. Under some considerable pressure. It is a competent hard rock intro of a drummer who had a feel for the music he was playing. This solo shows me that Matt has more to him than a lot of the repetitive fills in their songs.

this isn't anything considered a solo. It's a simple double bass with a few cymbal and snare hits, with some tom rolls thrown in there. It just sounds so fast, and that he's hitting so many drums because the bass drum is fucking turned up louder than any other drum or cymbal and he can only do the same consistent bass beat.
