Hi zak i get what your saying that every puppy goes threw this but i know this dog (she is a chawawa if that matters just in case) and when ever you try to bring her for a walk she will walk five steps of just not walk at all if you have any advice that would be awsome thanks
Dear Zac, I recently got a Aussie male and he is around 12 weeks old. (3 months) and at first we thought he could be possible deaf but then we figured out he is just very stubbern. We will scream his name (skeeter) as loud and click his clicker and clap and everything! and he just lays/sits there with his ears back and doesnot come to us. we have 2 other dogs and they dont do this! they come when we call. It would be so amazing if you could respond or make a video on how he can come
Sit near him, call his name, clap your hands, etc and if he takes a step towards you, click and treat. After awhile you can up the level, see if he comes closer if he does come to you, naturally you should click and treat. You can add a command to it after. Don't just continuously click the clicker, that's not the point of it. The point of the clicker is to reward the dog when he does something right.
Hey zak I have 2 dogs who bark like mad everytime someone walks past our house/ garden. I don't know how to control this. Can you suggest anything? Thanks
Please help. We have 2 9wk old mini schnauzers. The male is petrified of all visitors. He screams when anyone else tries to hold him. How can we help him get comfortable with our friends and family? He is very loving towards me and my partner but completely afraid of anyone else. Can you help us?
click the dog for looking at the leash, then for touching it with their nose, then their paw. then put it on them and click and jackpot. then attach the leash to their collar for a second and click. then for several seconds, click, gradually clicking up to a minute. next let them run around the house with the leash on (supervising them, of course. wouldn't want them to get strangled!!!) and keep clicking. pick up the leash a couple of times and click when you do so. soon
@bluefirex24 idk if it will work but it worked for me and my old wolf dog and my dads rottweiler by i just put the food up in a high place and make the dog sit and stay. then take a handfull of food and hand feed the dog if the dog gets aggressive say No and dont feed for 10 sec. When the dog sits, stays, and calms down start hand feeding again. keep doing this then slowly work up to putting the food bowl on the floor and putting your hand in it while your dog is in sit stay. Then say go get it.
@bluefirex24 what your dog thinks is that you want his food he is protecting his source of food. You are trying to let your dog know that you dont want his food your giving him the food and feeding should be happy. Always make him work for it with sit and stay if he moves from it do not give him the food. Like if he breaks sit stay to jump up and try to get at the food.
I'm having issues w/my knees &i cant really walk my dog as much as i use to.i take him to the park where he can run around instead&he loves playing in sprinklers, that'll wear him out.but i'm wondering if its o.k. to get a tredmill for him,if he wanted to use it.i imagine if he enjoys it, its o.k. but b/c i've only seen dogs on treadmills on dog abuse videos how ppl use those to beef em up.makes me think treadmills have no place w/a dog,but i'm thinking it would help him get more exorcise 4 fun?
Hey Zak, I have a 3yr old shetland sheepdog who is very well traind but when I try to train her to heel, give me her toy, or to come, she always stays a foot or two away, or she comes close and then runs a few feet awat from me. Even though she stays away from me she will stand fairly close to me for certain tricks and close enough for me to pet her. But whenever I have food she won't let me pet her very much. How do I get her to stand and/or walk a little closer to me?
My 4 month old Beagle does much better with a harness and walks loose leash unless there's another dog that she really wants to play with. She sometimes stops and pulls back with just a collar. Harness = going somewhere, possibly even the beach!
""wanna go for a walk"" lol said it quiet, didn't want to get the dogs exited!! HEY Zak, I have the passion to get my dog to catch Frisbee. my 3 month old german shepherd pup is awesome at catching rollers, but struggles with short tosses. How can both of us improve on this as far as techniques...?
Our GSD pup completely shut down when we first put the collar and lead on her. Would not move, not with all the sweet talking, all the food (juuuust out of reach so she'd had to take one step) or all the toys in the world. After about a week of trying, we leashed her up and just grabbed her and took her outside. Then all of a sudden she understood that collar & leash = go walkies, and now we can't put them on quick enough.
I feel as if your answers aren't anything dog owners across the world don't know. Zak can you get straight to the point and answers these questions better. Tell me something I don't know.
when i first got my Lab i made sure i got a light leash, not something too heavy for her neck and a light and comfortable collar, and i let her run around our backyard while playing with her in our backyard with her "equipment" on ;). Then when i started walking her, i would follow her for the first 3-5 days and if she pulled on the leash i would stop. You never want to pull or drag a puppy on leash (i see this so often in my job and in my neighbourhood and the pups grow up to be heavy pullers)
I think the "leash problem" revolves around attention span. We might not see it that way, but for puppies walking on a leash is difficult and an act of concentration because the leash is an entirely new concept to them, just like calculus is to us at first. Then add the natural tendency for puppies to just hate getting too far away from their cave, it looks like they hate the leash.
My dog will play for a toy 2-3 times per day but each time loses interest in 5 minutes or less. She is a 4 yr old beagle we just adopted. Any toys you recommend?
@aerosmithacdcbonjovi I'd say that is not unnatural, especially beagles tend to have short attention spans. Often that translates to lower "reliability". A way out of this is getting them to obsess over something, like clicker training. Beagles tend to be mostly food-motivated.
@aerosmithacdcbonjovi Maybe she is just not that interested in toys. Have you tried scented toys? Being that she is a beagle scent might spark her interest.
My puppy has no problems on a leash. However, when I try to take him on a walk, he never wants to walk anywhere away from our house, as in he will just sit there, and will NOT budge if I try to take him anywhere away from our house. If I try to carry him to a longer distance, he will literally SPRINT back to our door and start whining to get let in. Why is this so, and how could I get him to enjoy walks more?

I had my staffie, Hercules, walk around the house with the leash on him.
Just so he realized it doesn`t hurt him or symbolize something bad.
He walked with a leash already after 2 days, but he of course tried to bite it at times
He is a staffordshire bull terrier :P
