she is using her situation as an example to not fear your true identity only because its not welcomed: people of color, gays, people with disorders, people in poverty making their way up, people overcoming addiction, etc.
i think shes kind of racist here. shes acting and basically saying that being african american is a problem. "what are you going to do about it" you shouldn't HAVE TO do anything about it. im not black but i would be a little irritated at her if i was. plus scientists have traced the first humans to have come from africa, so yes we are all black adrian. i respect her as an artist though
@sadwonderland ....she is not completely "assuming," thats why she prefaces her major arguements by saying "if"....in sense she even has the right to assume because a lot interms of racism has changed over the past 30-40 years. When this video is played 30 years after its release we feel that she may assume too much about the viewer. But the thing is the targeted viewer has changed over the past decades...so in a sense your reaction is normal..but you need to think about context.
@sadwonderland she's not assuming a lot about the viewer, she's just going through a list of regular reactions to this video that a bunch of people may have. it's not meant to apply entirely to each person. not all of what she says will apply to you, but some of it may apply to others. a lot of it applied to my own thoughts about me being biracial. it may not be the same for others, but they may be hit hard by statements that didn't apply to me. it's meant to reach out to a bunch of people kay?
Fail to see why a rather intelligent person with little or no African ancestry would want to identify herself with niggers, or blacks as she likes to call them. Perhaps in '88 there was still a bit of hope leftover from the civil rights movement of the '60s that this sub-human breed would behave, catch up and prosper if given the opportunity. In 2010 we know, of course, that the opportunities were always there, and what was really missing were the internal intelligence, discipline and humanity.
@googlensky - Your whole post in 2010, makes many realize we are not even close to being there yet. Please let go of your slavery problem. It's time for you to move forward.
@lovingit1000-you imply that somehow we are heading for that utopian 'there'. It's like a dog pulling on the leash to get closer to a rotting carcass to roll in it, believing that if he pulls hard enough he'll get there. You see, it's not that we are not close to being 'there', WE are not going there, not aiming to go there, not even having any interest in going 'there'. WE are going our own way and THEY can't join, or destiny might not be as kind to them as the present neo-Marxist ethos.
@googlensky - I never said "there" was any utopia, but it sure beats this crazy place we've found ourselves in where the amount of melanin you were born with (or lack of it), should somehow mean anything other than...mankind can adapt to all environments. We are still adapting. And, with global warming, if you don't want to go there, you'd better get ready to move to the North Pole or somewhere else...because you can't stop it.

do all of you fools go to some northern, liberal arts school. this lady is no more than some half-witted lady that wants to make you think you are wrong for thinking how you think. this is not genius at all. you people must be brainwashed. that is not art. anyone can record their thoughts and put it on a tv screen.
if you had read to a word she had to say, you would understand that your comment is completely irrelevant to this video because it only proves ther point. good luck conveying YOUR genius ideas on the internet and getting close to as much praise for your groundbreaking ideas. ..... you defend your racism with theories of brainwash, maybe you should peek over to the other side and wonder why certain organizations wear sheets and others shout their message without fear of identity.............
You're the moron. You need to understand that art means many things to many different people. This is ground-breaking for the time in which it was produced. And this is an installation you dunce. It's a part of the art meaning there involves some sort of human interaction as well - we just aren't seeing that portion.
So racial Identity huh? Interesting.. but then again im not the artsy type

For someone accusing others of assuming, she's assuming a lot about the viewer herself.

Yes, but it's hard to deny that she's right.

She made this in 1988. I wonder if in 2010 she would even need to make it, or make the same assumptions about the attitudes of her audience?

Thank you for posting this! My FPA class has a class on video art, and she's one of the artists my prof mentioned. Now I know the whole speech. =D
