The M1 was originally supposed to terminate on the A-ring, even further into london than Ringway 1. The first motorway to open in the UK was the M6 Preston Bypass, not the M1.
@BartLCY10 We Americans can wank with the best of them ...HOWEVER consider ourselves 'responsible wankers'...we keep it private and wash our hands afterwards like good little wankers. So there, consider yourself better informed and no need to thank me *goes off whistling into the sunset*
Usual nonsense about more roads causing more jams so no point building them. In which case why does driving across N London (N Circ Rd) take 1/4 the time of driving across S London?
Bravo!! eventhough I am not a London-er (London-ite? I dunno, from London, Big words hurt brain) I have been visiting for a few weeks now, and I have to say it is intresting to see the history on why things are the way they are. I wish the US, Especally my home city of Seattle, would take notice and embrace public trasnport like here. Instead of adding bike lanes, and bus routes.

I started as a junior transport planner in the sixties so this great programme brought back many memories of projects we worked on and abandoned. I only spotted one error. The first motorway was the M6 (Preston by-pass) not the M1.
Holy shit man, I LOVE that kind of transportation "secrets" all around the town. Your first documentary about Northern Line extension was similarly brilliant. Please please give us more!
I just sat and watched this without checking my phone, tabbing away to Facebook or getting bored. This is TOP STUFF.
South London used to have a really extensive tram network well into zones 5 &6. In fact, you can work out where they used to go by looking for unusually wide roads. A tram line used to go by my house.
