I never liked Davy's music hall numbers or Mickey's pseudo-scatting, but the rest of their output (85% or so) I see as being fantastic. However one looks at The Monkees phenomenon, it was a creative and proficient aggregation that brought about some drop dead brilliant music.
Its pretty amazing that Mickey had no idea how to play drums when this first started, and he wasn't really into it when he had to learn, but look at him now!
It's very sad that this is the only video from these 1997 shows. It's looking more and more like this will be the last time the four ever perform together, and all we have are these grainy, poor-quality vids of their only full live concerts together post-1968. I was crushed when Mike quit again in April of '97!
I want the original clip, from Head (Daddy's Song). This song is poignant, about being fatherless & refusing to let his own son grow up, the same way.
Peter had a most unusual singing voice when the Monkees first came together. I don't know why they didn't have him sing either lead or solo more often than they did...unless he didn't want to at the time.
This was actually written for the Monkees by Harry Nilsson, who also wrote Cuddly Toy, which Davy sang on "Head". Anyway, I always liked Davy's version of this tune. Thanks for this clip, I smiled trough the whole thing!!!
Mickey originally sang this and Peter co-wrote it with another guy named Joseph Richards, NOT Harry Nilsson, but Harry was a genius and wrote better songs anyway.
cute. did peter always want to handle the lead on his song? micky was a much better singer in the heyday but by this time he probably took on the kermit voice, huh? glad to hear pete singing this without bein embarrassing
Unless you're talkin about Daddy's Song then I don't know... but I got an email that you replyed to MY comment so I assume your talkin about Pete's Sake
They should have flashed the lights or something during the pause in "Daddy's Song" to simulate the black/white interchange during the same pause in the movie.
This is so great! Yeah, the dancing is almost exactly the same as it was in Head. Davy ought to have been in more movie musicals. Come to think of it, was he ever in ANY? Also, For Pete's Sake is my favorite Monkees song and it's great to see all four of them perform it.
@lwallace3 Um, YES, Davy was in musicals! He was in the Broadway version of Oliver! The cast was on the Ed Sullivan Show the same night as...the Beatles first appearance...
He must have been really fit then to have danced at such a quick pace and sing along aswell, not sounding too puffed either! Well fit!

the original Demo had one Michael Nesmith Singing it and it sounded very good...but, Davy's vocal to it added something and Nez agreed

Daddys song was awesome while For Petes Sake was a let down.
anthos818 1 year ago
@anthos818 A let down how? And, that would mean you're not in support of The Monkees as a live entity.

I remember they played this song during the closing credits one or two seasons. I never knew what the name of it was. I think it's one of their best.

Suprising that they pulled this one out. Love seeing Davey trying "The Dance". The version with Mike on lead vocals is kind of a trip.

Did you know this song was written by a man named Harry Nilsson? If you don't know about him than you really gotta look him up on youtube

This was Davey at his best. One of his better songs and you can tell he enjoys it.

Great video! Davy is awesome and again it's proof of how horribly underrated Peter was and is!

wow, great job. Davy sounds great without even factoring in that seems jumping all over the stage! Britney, take note!

Got a Stephen stills vibe to it. Peter and Stephen are very close friends have been for many years.

whats nesmith doing on keybords?
crispian2005 3 years ago 2
Nesmith played organ on the original song. Pete played lead, Mickey played drums and I think, Chip Douglas played bass.
