  • Wha?

  • Wha?

  • i really love this movie!

  • I havent started watching yet, but i think that after reading few comments,i probably will be in "JUST TALK TO HIM ALREADY FFS!!!"-Mood* the whole time of this film.

  • Down by the border mexico way.

  • people who don't like this are like people who don't like sophisticated music and therefore have to listen to music thats really stupid like lil wayne.doesn't require any thinking at all

  • @ebos89 People who judge others for not liking the same artform as themselves are elitists that think the world needs to be like them. We are all meant to have different opinions on everything, and if we did not, this world would be a very boring place.

Sometimes it is the simplest music, a drumbeat, some simple sounds, that speak the deepest to us.

  • @SangosEvilTwin Sometimes it is the simplest music, a drumbeat, some simple sounds, that speak the deepest to us. <-- was all that was needed. Silent Hill on a broken canvas.

  • @Message621 was it? it certainly seemed that the other person needed a reminder that art is not seen the same through all eyes.

  • @SangosEvilTwin ok go listen to your rebecca black, and justin beiber and call it music stfup Ha

  • @ebos89 I don't listen to them. why do you think I do?

  • A minute in and I can already tell I'm in for a crazy trip... Awesome.

  • @mailchibi88 General Motors was a crazy trip. so is the Assembly Line. Great thought only comes from great amounts of work.

  • @Message621 Amen to that!

  • As soon as I saw it had subtitles,,, I turned it off :P

  • Amazing! its like watching Vampire hunter D (the sexy one) lol

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! :D

  • this movie is symbolism galore

  • @hanluy1215 Yeah, it's like Evangelion. Except the symbolism actually matters in this.

  • Creepy ass anime...

  • if salvador dali created a cartoon....

  • @RebelFierce Uh...he did. It's called "Destino", he worked directly with Disney on it, and it can be found as a special feature on the most recent Fantasia Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack release.

  • @PlantainHurricane It's awesome! totally a trip xD

  • 2:15 --> Heavy Metal much?

  • This is the thing about anime, dont get me wrong I LOVE anime. But it takes freakin forever for one scene to get going! I mean i couldnt even finish watching this!

  • I have the attention span of squirrel thus I couldn't even finish this video

  • @CHINTASTICQuesadilla Squirrel have great attention to everything. how terrible you're sarcasm is.

  • Dios buscado a un Angel que no cumplio con su trabajo..

God look for an Angel that failed with their work...

  • This movie has a very pronounced Gothic-steampunk appearance.

  • @jarblewarble

    what is gothic-steampunk?

  • @jarblewarble

This film has nothing to do with steampunk in any way or form. Even the "gothic" aspect is arguable

  • @Assimandelini That was only my first impression. I didn't know what else to compare it to.

  • animation rule: Don't make anything last on screen for over 10 seconds. people get board. this some how just makes me want to see more.

  • @Fakewings18 I know what you mean. I know that using a piece of animation for over ten seconds can easily bore an audience but it can work depending on how well handeled it is. Oshii's later films like Ghost in the Shell used that a lot but it was either because he wanted the audience to connect more or there wasn't a need for more movement, or he was being cheap considering the high production values. Still, this was one of his first films so he may not have handeled it well.

  • Well wtf is the girl named angel and she protecting the egg or is the egg of an angel and this girl happens to find it and she protects it I mean I'm still confused

  • VERY IMPORTANT, I am currently collecting emails and messages to send to Criterion in an effort to get a release of this film. Everyone, please contact me as soon as possible to support this wonderous film. SIncerly, Angel's Egg Coalition.

  • @Fragile0Still How can I help? I would love a north american release of this movie.

  • This film has me confirmed for full weeaboo tier status. American pop culture hardly ever sees this kind of stuff... it's brilliant, inspired, and original art unlike the hamfisted attempts of Hollywood to approach these subjects with the lense of art for art's sake.

  • @Nospherith Although it may sadden you to know that this movie bombed in Japan when it was first released.

  • @capyle1981

Well, it's obvious why it bombed.

  • @Nospherith You do know that being a weeaboo isn't a good thing, right?

  • @TearsofWolves What's a weeaboo and why is being one a bad thing?

  • @Animeforever61 AAAHHHHHH Weeaboo- Urbandictionary is your friend fool xD

  • @Animeforever61 A weeaboo is someone who is a Japanese wanabe. They wear eyeliner to make their eyes look Asian, they spend an ungodly amount of money on Japanese things, are obsessed with anime and/or manga, use gratuitous Japanese phrases in pretty much every sentence, and many other things. Look up "magicalpockyusagi" on YouTube for an excellent example.

  • @TearsofWolves Okay, thanks for telling me.

  • The religious symbolism and omission of constant chatter makes this movie deeper than anything I have seen to date. The fact such a stunning masterpiece was made back in the mid-80s just boggles the mind. North American animation today is utter CRAP compared to this! Even if you don't fully understand what is going on, the artwork and technique is worth every second.

  • @Homemadegameguru No, actually its not.

  • I don't think this movie can be described on a spectrum of bad or good but by deciphering your own beliefs, ideas and interpretations into your own articulations.

  • So many fucked up movies ive seen this week, im scarred for life

  • this is a beautifull film best art work i have ever seen! the message of this film is also very beautifull dont let fear imprison your spirit.

  • I hate when people try to disect every little thing in one of these artsy type animations. Just enjoy the look and sound of it, fuck the underlying messages if there are any.

  • @hungoversundays Part of the importance of things like this is 'dissecting' them. People should be able to analyze and appreciate the art at the same time unless they're morons (I'm talking about those with the incapability of doing both for clarification). Looking at things in depth is an exercise of intelligence and insight. You might learn something if you try it some time. ;)

  • @blazarii

I see what your saying but to me it over complicates things. I enjoy it for the sake of it being what it is.

  • I honestly didn't think this was a very good movie (not bad either) even if the animation was nice. Like I understood the story and I think I got a lot of the symbolism but still you can't "oh, this is a work of art because there's no dialogue and it's confusing". That's not much different than saying "oh, this is crap because there's no dialogue and it's confusing".

  • @WorkSucksMedia

You completely missed the point of this film, just because it has little or no dialogue, doesn't mean it wasn't good, the film is avant-garde, and the point is to draw your own conclusions about what it's trying to portray or symbolize, and I also think it's like a painting in motion, you get to explore the sights and sounds of the world without worrying to much about plot or dialogue, it's more of an exploration than an animation

  • Comment removed

  • @gatheringleaves You completely missed the point in what I was saying. I'm not just going to blindly praise a movie and declare it a work of art because it's silent, surreal, and/or symbolic. Don't assume that because I didn't like this movie, I just didn't "get it" or I'm not smart enough to appreciate it. And I didn't say it was not-good because it doesn't have dialouge.

  • @WorkSucksMedia

No, you still dont get it, this is a good film because it is deep and symbolic and encourages people to think outside of the box and not have to rely on endless dialogue and annoying yelling and screaming for emotional impact, now with that said you cant not like this movie, it's just too out there and beautiful and intelligent, it's like a moving work of art. Open your eyes, eventually you'll get it

  • @gatheringleaves I can't not like this movie? I can't have an opinion? I'm trying to say that whether or not it has dialogue has nothing to do with how good it is. Being silent doesn't make it good just like how being silent doesn't make it bad. I agree that the visuals are really good and there's some meaning to it, I just don't think it's a work of art just because there's no dialogue.

  • @WorkSucksMedia Subjective determination of how "good" art is does not impact on whether or not it IS art.

This is most definitely art. It has affected me as much as any other work of art. It's one of my favourite films, for a variety of reasons. It won't resonate with everyone so much and that's cool, but neither your opinion nor mine has any bearing on whether or not this is art. Both Oshii and Amano are talented artists whose work has affected many.

  • There's dialogue, just not much XP

And am I the only one who sees this as more of an interesting film than as an art form?

  • Any more thought provoking animation like this????

  • @TheBENGALHANNIBAL

    Hello my good man.

    You should try these also.

    1) Gandahar

    2) Fantastic planet

Really hope you enjoy these suggestions.

  • @TheBENGALHANNIBAL Perhaps you should try Cat Soup. :)

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBENGALHANNIBAL Try "Little Island". The animation isn't too good (it's an independent film from the 50's) and the sound effects get REALLY annoying but it's also very deep.

  • 7:40 looks like Stone henge

  • Plz, Is this a bloody movie/ ;-P

  • idk, while i appreciate this movie, it's kinda heavy on the thinking side and so it depreciates from its ability to entertain, unless thinking is entertainment...usually people watch movies and such to destress and disconnect so idk, it has its place

  • @dendara100

I'm sorry, but you sound like a toothless hillbilly... What the hell is "unless thinking is entertainment" supposed to mean? Why do you think people play chess, solve puzzles, read books, etc...? lol Do you seriously believe that pleasure can be gained without attaching any thought process behind it? If you think that turning your brain off (like a fucking zombie) is entertainment then you are retarded... Literally.

  • @dendara100

Either that or you have severe neurosis, because when your own thoughts begin to stress you out, that's a sure sign of neurosis. Pathological help is highly recommended in either case. No offense.

  • actually after this work,Oshii couldnt get any jobs for a time.

  • OMG, WOW, THIS IS AMAZING

  • wow, this movie is slow-paced. but that's good because it allows you to take in all the breathtaking imagery. pure art.

i love the music that starts playing when the girl is looking out the window. and i love her hair.

  • i love this movie! it's so dark and strange... neat symbolism too.... <3

  • Beautiful

  • well that was boring.

  • @evilyakko zombies from saturn

  • Missing parts 2 and 6

  • how beautiful O.O amazing animation

  • I really like this animation, but i cannot find part 2 of 9 :(

  • I really like this animation, but i cannot find part 2 of 9 :(

  • Habe anyone seen a silent movie called Cat Soup. Its also a mindf***.

  • @Pooky1991 I LOVE Cat Soup! It's really good, kinda reminds me of this.

  • I HAD to watch this because Yoshitaka Amano was collaborating with the director on this project. His works are amazing, and so far I'm liking the first part. :D

  • A very advanced movie for 1985, it's strange you don't hear much about it. It's just another one of those forgotten works of art. It is a very bleak movie and on the surface it seems quite simplistic but after watching it I realized how complex the story is and how that story can be told with few words. They should make more movies like this.

  • this anime is genious!

  • the art on this is just amazing....im blown away.

  • They should do a movie off of this, it'd be great imho

  • @bumbapaxxa There already is a movie. It's this one.

  • @bumbapaxxa lol

  • @bumbapaxxa

well guess what? your watching it right now! :D

  • cool

  • Ugh it's the all-seeing eye!

  • Looks like a Moebius comic

  • this is True anime!

  • This Anime blows my mind.

  • Interesante película. La atmósfera es muy envolvente.

    Genial.

  • Although this was uploaded 4 years ago, I can't help but notice that there is not part 2 or (2 of 9). Why am I even talking about this? Because I (maybe even some others) am one of those people who want to be able to watch an animation like this without having to look for someone else who uploaded the movie, or I just don't want to be told to download the video off some random website. Hopefully people won't start giving me negative comments because this is just my opinion.

  • @INEEDANIME i think it has something to do with copyright snazz. they only uploaded odd numbered parts if you take a look see at their channel. dunno sir. i wanna watch too. :3

  • Hmmm, when the feudal period?

  • For some weird reason the movie reminds me of the Berserk manga

  • Very amazing and meaningful movie! I am not fond of anime but i love this one

  • this is really advanced shit for 1985 xD

  • @shizznah lol I didn't even realize this was made in the 80s until I started reading the comments.

  • i downloaded this clip to my psp so i can fall asleep when the teachers voice doesn`t work

  • Oh wow. The music is amazing.

    I hope there's a soundtrack =3

  • hmmm almost like luis bunuel in anime form but with the images of dali this def get in my top ten of surrealist films up there with the andalusian dog and l'aged'or

  • This emerald in a land of diamonds proves that anime is MUCH more than just a "cartoon."

  • I think stuff like this proves *animation* is a wider medium than just "cartoons." At least in Japan (well, Europe too) that's more recognized.

  • btw that was a fantastic analagy

  • It'll take more than one anime to prove otherwise. But opinion is opinion, and mine is that, other than qualities of animation, there is no difference.

I'll give compliments to the makers of this anime; it has good quality.

  • When I was a kid I watched it once or twice, I think - never to the end.

I always remembered this film then, but I always hesitated to watch it because of that moment when she cries over broken egg. I just can`t have it.

  • why she lives in that dark world?

  • actually no reason to downrank him.

unless you are an arts student or a major geek this movie is really trying hard to turn one away.

  • I don't understand your words. When did I mention a him? I just thought the movie was too slow. I almost fell asleep while I was watching it.

  • I find that kind of insulting. I'm an artist, and this movie is hard for me to watch. Not all artists are into this kind of thing.

  • @Uraili Yeah, only the good ones are.

  • This whole movie is full of symbols.

Like the egg is her innocence and he is supposed to be Jesus or something.

  • tis movie is... interesting

    and creepy

    i dont get this show

  • hm, interesting =o

  • Salvador Dali would be proud. Thanks for sharing!

  • Yoshitaka Amano's images are just brilliant!

  • i love this guy...!

  • This movie is Beautiful, the drawings are AMAZING and the story and concept are Great, a truly well made movie

  • Much too slooow.. It's beautiful, but too much emphasis tends to make the mind wander...

  • I almost fell asleep

  • I analized the whole movie once for film class... watch it, read about it, then watch it again... its really interesting

  • This movie was such a gem, great piece of animation and visuals

  • you're completely missing the point. No dialouge represents the confusion and emptiness of the world and the beauty of this movie is conveyed through sound and images already. By just thinking "oh, there's no dialouge. that's BORING" is immature, childish, and completely shallow. It's missing the point of a movie like this. ugh, sorry for the rant, I'm not one to endure mindless comments like that.

  • @LittleWingEdoFangirl

    Hellow! What does "Edo" mean?

  • @ASTAEKHORUM

Edo is the former name of the city Tokyo. The Edo Period in Japanese history begins when Ieyasu Tokugawa comes to power as Shogun and moves the capital from Kyoto to Edo.

  • @LittleWingEdoFangirl Just like WALL-E, eh? Anyway, this might be a good bedtime movie. The animation is what drew me to this vid moreso than what animnewsnetwork summarized for me. I'll see how it goes.

  • @LittleWingEdoFangirl

Well I must say that is surprised me to say the least. No sound....i though mmmm sounds interesting, and then I realized i wasn't in the mood to go through a movie with out sound so I said I'll put it at the back of my brain and watch it another day.

  • @SilverPinkBunny I agree with your comment. Its hard to get through something like this for some folks. I'm included. Ican't get through the most of this movie because of this. Nothing wrong with that. Sadly, I don't get the meaning of this movie. Its too overly saturated with symbolism I don't understand. The art is amazing, but this is something I just don't get. I don't know what the hell I'm missing. What say you?

  • @LittleWingEdoFangirl Yeah... I don't like trolls either. ;-)

  • @fyrestorme123 actions speak louder than words. besides, who is she going to talk to? there is no one there yet.

  • This reminds me of Eraserhead

  • beautyfull movie, i love it...

  • Ditto Matt's comment

  • It's like H.R. Giger and Salvador Dali filled my head with marijuana.

  • I'm so quoting this!

  • Ok, so as a fan of this film, I have started emailing Criterion about releasing it. I have said how little animation is represented within the catalogue and how hard to find this dvd is, both foreign and domestic. Please, all I ask for you guys to help me and start emailing criterion. I will upload responses as soon as I get them. Please help me so this film does not fall into obscurity.

  • tell meh how to e-mail em or give me a link or something i'll do it..

  • Comment removed

  • The minute you see this, the only artist that pops into your mind is Amano. LOl

  • Oshii Mamoru (Ghost in the shell,Jin-roh,

    innocence...)

  • this reminds me of akira did the some person make it?

  • nm i guess not=P

  • fuck all those cats who gave you thumbs down, theres no reason for that.

  • ha thanx

  • She/he was probably thumbed down for asking if it was yaoi when it clearly isn't. :P

  • itz kuz i waz lookin 4 yaoi and this just poped up=P

  • this is so beautiful. i miss animes like this.

it reminds me of the heavy metal anime movies too lol

  • This is so beautiful...and makes me sad to know that CGI has taken over...it will never compensate for such beauty

  • that's why i want to make cgi free anime, like they used to

  • i have the same goal!! :D

  • are you good at drawing manga?

  • CGI is only a tool. The art comes from the artist. No matter what medium he uses or how.

  • Check out studio 4C,

They did mindgames and tekkon kinkreet.

    Hand drawn awesomeness.

  • woah what that heck is this place? has reality just imploded on it self or somthing?

  • This is excellent, the director completely ignored all cliches and went for the gold. Naruto is LAUGHABLE and looks like a DISGRACE when shown this kind of anime, you should check out 5 Centimeters Per Seconds and Serial Experiment Lain and Interlude.

  • i know Naruto isent much of an anime, I like 1980's animes better then todays crap..Like Silver Fang is from 1987 and its 100000000 times better then Narutard and Silver Fang sequal Ginga Densetsu WEED sucks too. Animation in GDW i harrable just like narutard and naurtard suppuden

  • wolflover, It's not Masashi Kishimoto's fualt that his manga or anime is "crap" as you say, I don't know why, but I feel your donig wrong by saying words such as "narutard" in front of such a beautifull anime... ...I am sat in front of a great anime eating my ramen and onigiri and someone says such things, well, tut tut tut, and also, bravo, thank you, Weasal Chan for uploading this, no one ever seems to find these "old" animes... ...ahh, a true "Otaku" moment... ...keep it up ;) x

  • SEL is great.

But why did you even mention naruto?

  • Comment removed

  • the music at the beginning scares me

  • Really beautiful and surreal. Artistic and psychological, strangely allegorical. Neat to think about, lovely and disturbing to view.

  • I wish I could watch the rest of the movie but the even parts are missing. (Parts 2, 4, 6, and 8)
