@CKNYoung : I'm sure it is a reference to Tom Bombadil, a character in LOTR who many (though not all) Tolkien fans adore. But his relevance to the overall LOTR plot is almost non-existent, PJ had to cut some stuff, and Bombadil was one of the very obvious things to cut. Didn't impact of the flow of the LOTR films at all -- in fact, it helped that -- but fans of Bombadil were still very disappointed.
i cant even imagine how the people who read the book / fans are gonna react to this .
thank god m not one of them . they must feel horrid .even i felt bad when i didnt see arwen in ralph bakshs lotr adaption and then found out she was just a minor character in the book
@SuperAiden007 : How individual fans will react depends on just how OCD they are. I think the well-adjusted ones will not have a particular problem with it. There were large numbers of elves involved in the latter parts of the story, and Tolkien gave them barely any character development, or even names. Given that most of the battle at the end doesn't involve the dwarves (in the book at least), Jackson would be nuts not to develop a few characters for the movie.
@drdaveoldguy ya also one of my questions . jrr tolkins created beautiful characters like elves and dosent does not focus much on them specially on elf females in lotr book nor in hobbit .i think his favourite was ellord that keeps on recuring a number of times . galadriel only appears in fellowship and arwen is a minor character .
although her did create a book called silmarillion on elves .
it was peter jacksons work that does so much for elvish women galadriel arwen and now tauriel.
@SuperAiden007 : And actually, while Galadriel and Arwen aren't given that much to do in the LOTR story in the books, they do take on greater significance in other Tolkien writings. The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, which appears in one of the Appendices of LOTR, inspired a lot of Arwen's scenes in the movies. And Galadriel is a powerful figure off and on, all the way from early in Silmarillion, prior to the creation of the sun and moon, to the end when she dismantles Dol Guldur.
peter jackson originally wanted saorse ronan-u know the girl from lovely bones to play itaril in his movie adaption of the HOBBIT . but she was too busy being an idiot and turned it down . so they ended up with evangeline lilly playing tauriel in the movie a wood elf /warrior princess. THE END
What!? A hot warrior elf chick that wasn't in the book!? That is SOOO Hollywood of them! Lol well I guess its okay as long as they make it work really well, and as long as they keep in Legolas for us girls! ;)
oh for pete's sake, get over it, people. so what if she wasn't in the book? old tom wasn't in the lord of the rings, and those movies turned out awesome. so what if they added a new character? personally, i'm happy that they put her in there, because she's a GREAT actor.
hot?! HOT?! WTH is wrong with you guys?! One of the worst in Hollywood! Along with Michelle Rodriguez! Her part as Kate in Lost was absolutely terrible, and she is not hot her front teeth give her the nickname bugs bunny. Why was i not aware of her partecipation in this film?! I've been following all film updates on the hobbit since day 1!
excuse me angelchild2511, who is "old tom"

A kick ass female character YAWN. I don't recall that being in the original book. They're being PC for the sake of it now and it's boring.
